The end of an era - Sony Ericsson is now history
16 February 2012 by Olav Hellesø-Knutsen Sony has now completed the full acquisition of Sony Ericsson. Ericsson does not have any shares in the company any more, and the new company name is now officialy Sony Mobile Communications AB Sony today announced that it has competed the full acquisition of Sony Ericsson. As of today, the company name is Sony Mobile Communications AB. AB (aktiebolag) is the Swedish term for limited company, so the company will still be linked to Sweden even though Swedish Ericsson is out-of-the-way. The corporate headquarters is in London and research and development are taking place in Beijing China, Lund Sweden, Silicon Valley U.S and Tokyo Japan. Sony Ericsson has always been the underdog, and it still is. It has been among the top-5 mobile phone manufactures in terms of sold units, but that is several years ago. Sony has one foot in many electronic branches, where telecom is one of them. But Sony is not a very profitable company anymore. And we doubt the acquisition of Sony Ericsson will change that within the next year or two. The Q4 results from 2011 showed us that it makes most of its money not from selling electronics, but by selling life insurance. It will be interesting to see which plans Sony has for its game platform and if the company can take advantages of filling their smartphones with more Sony trademarks than the currently PlayStation, Exmor-R, Bravia, Video and Music Unlimited. Do you think the Sony buyout will bring the company back to the top-5 position within the next couple of year? please take this to a more appropriate place thanks! So will SONY mobiles have a new logo now? ![]() On 2012-02-16 19:01:16, Bonovox wrote: ![]() Is that the official new logo? On the sony s, the liquid crystal logo is still visible on the back on the press shots, this could be because its a hardware issue (if you look at the arc the inside of the back cover has been altered to hold to logo) Or it could also be to keep some legacy of SE, or just temporary to ease people into the transition, then they'll take it away all together only time will tell

So what will happen with Ericsson ? are they officially out of business for good or something ?
Etaab,
Last time I checked Ericsson was still the worlds largest vendor of mobile networks, so no they are far from being out of business. The mobile phone division has been a very small part of Ericsson for a decade or so, so no significant lost there. Ive just read the page of Wikipedia about Ericsson. I never really paid that much attention to them before. Quite a good read and educational. I didnt know most of it, i thought Ericsson was simply a mobile phone manufacturer.
They even have an office here in DR. They've been here for a long time.
It would have been a better result if Ericsson had chosen to go back to making their own phones again. Sony at their best and Ericsson at their best and consumers win keeping fans of both happy. Yes it would have been nice to have the choice of both still. But I am not sure Ericsson would have bounced back on their own. They would be playing catch up for years
Celebrate! Welcome Sony Mobile! A new era has dawned!
Thanks to SE who contributed with lots of great phones ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() VaioPhone? ![]() ![]() I always looked forward to this from ![]() ![]() Looks a little odd
by todays standards, perhaps (a little), but this was a prototype 10 years ago!
