Sony Ericsson today announced the Xperia X10. This is the first model from the company running on the Android operating system. Xperia X10 has a 4 inch touchscreen display with a 8.1 megapixels camera

Most of our earlier predictions was correct. Except the fact that Xperia X10 is running version 1.6 of the OS Android. We know models from other manufactures are able to upgrade from version 1.6 to 2.0 so this should be possible with the X10 as well. With the Xperia X10, Sony Ericsson also introcues a new platform called UX (User eXperience) which will evolve across the product portfolio over time. X10 is only one of many in this new family of devices coming to market in Q1 2009. Jointly with the new UX "layer" two other features are introduced as well:

  • Timescape where all communication with a person are collected in one place. Facebook, Twitter, email, photos and text messages are all gathered so there will be no need to open different applications to see what is going on.
  • Mediascape - Same thing as Timescape, but this is for media content. Online or local music, photos and videos are in one place. Access media from everywhere. PlayNow, YouTube or phone memory. We could call it an advanced media browser.

A new feature is added to the camera application as well. The X10 can recognize up to five faces in a photo and automatically stores the image under your friends contact page.

With it's large 4 inch display, only a handfull of other mobile phones can match it's size. The high resolution of 854 x 480 pixels (WVGA) are one of the largest available on mobile phones today. The interesting part here is of course how long the 1500 mAh battery will be able to keep the display bright.

It seems like Sony Ericsson has stopped supporting the proprietary Memory Stick memory card from one of its mother company Sony. The Xperia X10 is using microSD card for memory expansion.

3rd party applications for the Xperia X10 can be downloaded for free or purchased both from the Sony Ericsson Play Now Arena and the Android Market.

Awesome hardware. Shame that SE's software efforts will so likely be worse than hopeless.

Despite all the hopes for getting the latest and greatest of the Android crop, Sony Ericsson are serving a cold meal to all the gadget lovers out there. They refused to comment any further on the matter but perhaps all is not lost. Our best guess is they'll have some hard time adjusting their proprietary UI for Android 2.0 (Eclair) so they prefer to stick to 1.6 for the time being in an effort to get the XPERIA X10 out in the market as soon as possible.

And the current plans for the X10 availability say Q1 2010. Yup, missing the holiday season and shipping the handset during the tight-pocketed January and February is certainly the last thing they'd like to do, but proper product development obviously demands it.

Another nasty surprise is that the OS won't be making use of multi-touch gestures such as pinch zooming in the web browser and gallery.

A clever automatic face recognition system has been integrated in the images department as well, recognizing up to five faces in any image.

Anyways, the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 might as well be their magnum opus after a long period of setbacks and we really hope it will get them back on track

Future Upgrades:

Onscreen fingerprint recognition system to unlock the screen:
Owner Face recognition system to unlock the phone:
Realtime face recognition system to id someone on onscreen, in real time.

Good luck with the technology SE.

Yupe Xenon is the only laging factor here.

But love the Android OS and the 1GHz SnapeDragon processor and the FWVGA (Full Wide VGA) 854x480 pixels resolution which simply denotes it's got pure 16:9 aspect ratio. Hope it has the 30FPS video recording capability. And Gesture recognition is gonna be the "It" thing with new open source development.

I am sure to develop an 320x240 or 240x320 (better yet an multi-resolution) ngage horizontal hadheld emulator for you SE, just for you and this device. Just give me a site to upload my app.

No 32 GB internal memory... :( Is display capacitive? And only 16,536 colors, or is it wrong in the specifications? Well, at least we got the front camera, it was unclear from previous images.
