According to a patent Sony Ericsson have come up with the idea of turning a mobile phone into a universal remote control.

Sony Ericsson envisages a touchscreen remote control that can display different remote control user interfaces, while the phone itself contains the necessary electronics to control a home device such as your TV or Hi-Fi. the general idea is of making your mobile phone an actual remote control, capable of switching TV channels, calling up and controlling a TV programme guide, operating your DVD or VCR, in other words, everything you'd want a remote control to control.

Sony Ericsson's idea is even more ingenious, though, as they anticipate the remote contorl user interface being implemented as a 'skin', which can be downloaded onto the phone either from the device itself or from a website. Now the question must surely be "why has Sony Ericsson not released this feature yet?" as this patent was filed on August 26th 2005. Of all the amazing features crammed into mobile phones over the past few years, surely this one is a killer app. source:Patent Page mobilementalism

This is a patent APPLICATION, not a patent.

So it may be two years until it is granted - IF it is granded.

it would be great just to have volume up down ,channel step up and down, on off, mute

well the basic stuff.

the problem is the ir has to be of a special kind not the one usally on E/// mobiles .
but how hard can it be to implement?!!

i think some of the nokia smart models have the consumer IR as it is called

THIS FEATURE IS VERY I-M-P-O-R-T-A-N-T because is VERY USEFULL !!! Great Sony Ericsson phones, with great ideas !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I expect in the future , that Sony Ericsson took no.1 place !!! Have HIGH quality, but displays have to be much BIGGER !!! (K & W series). THE JOYSTICK IS NO. 1 PROBLEM, that must be removed for ever !!! GO SE , GO GO , GO WITH SUCCES IN THE TOP OF MOBILE PHONES !!!

Its just that no hardware manufacturer has integrated that feature into a phone only 3rd party solutions.
