Blackberry Torch 9800 launch announced

Blackberry’s first example of a new generation of handsets emerges, the Blackberry Torch 9800

In a bid to fight back against Android and Apple, Blackberry has announced the Torch 9800 smartphone, the first of a new generation of handsets to run the new Blackberry 6 operating system from RIM.

As you would expect from Blackberry, the Torch 9800 features a QWERTY keyboard - in this case a slider version, as well as a touch-screen display.

Though the Blackberry Storm first featured touch capabilities, the 3.2 inch 480x360 capacitive touch screen signifies the first real foray into unchartered waters for the company.

Not only is the screen upping the ante, a 624MHz processor will power along the new OS, and new icons, graphics and animations have been added to update the whole experience.

Also included is HSDPA support, a 5 megapixel camera with a flash, autofocus, digital zoom and face recognition, multi-touch support (pinch-to-zoom), a new web-kit based internet browser with tabbed browsing and 4GB of onboard memory (up to 32GB available via the SDHC card slot).

512 MB of flash memory also exists, and is vital for the running of apps as they can only be stored on it.

From an aesthetical point of view, all the core apps have been redesigned and new apps for watching YouTube videos and viewing social networking and RSS feeds have been included, hopefully helping to streamline the vast quantities of information we receive on a daily basis.

Other notable features comprise of a completely new multimedia user interface, graphical, context-sensitive pop-up menus, a 3.5mm jack headset jack, an optical trackpad and as mentioned earlier, Rim's new Blackberry 6 OS.

"This is one of the most significant launches in RIM's history and we are proud to introduce the new BlackBerry Torch and BlackBerry 6," said Mike Lazaridis, president and co-ceo, Research In Motion.

"With a new user interface, new browser and new handset design, the highly anticipated BlackBerry Torch and BlackBerry 6 deliver integrated and uncompromising capabilities for consumers and business professionals that preserve the industry-leading strengths of the BlackBerry platform while adding exciting new dimensions."

I do like this and it seems to have the best in terms of touch screen and a standard keypad.

Ah, p900 lover opening a thread on this new Blackberry. I'm expecting p990 and p1 lover to post here as well because this form factor is what many fans have been wanting for a long time. Lets not forget had the P5 Paris that never made it however, this phone is great and I'm sure it will be a massive hit. Excellent from RIM.

I'm definitely upgrading from my Bold 9700 to this unit. the price will be comparable to the 9700 at launch; and I'm purchasing this outright. The OS improvements along with capactive touchscreen vs the junk click-screen is sweet!

Will change it thanks for the heads up. It does look very good. One of my friends got one and i added myself to her BBM and with that short experience the OS does seem very nice to use.

Is anyone in the esato blackberry world using the torch yet?? I am tempted to jump up from my 9700 to the 9800 but all the reviews seem to be very mixed on both positive and negative scales. I love my 9700 and would be lost with out it, just wanting some shouts on if the 9800 is the next step or am i better waiting for os 6 to come to my 9700?

There is already OS 6 for the 9700, which I previously had. I have also used a 9780 but neither match the 9800. The real estate of the screen is awsome. It is snappy and responsive. All in all, I would say RIM got it spot on here, and in my humble opinion, this is the best BB yet.

My auntie had one. She bought it from Jakarta. Way better than the Storm family.

The camera is also improved. It looks almost like a digicam now. Will post some live shots when I have time.

A very good move from 9700.

As promised, here's my live shots (sorry, it's only two).

Homescreen

Keyboard. Sending picture through Bluetooth. I find it better than in Bold (9000 and 9700).

Sample photos (EXIF's are corrupted):

I know. Unfortunately, I haven't tested the new Bold yet. My aunties don't have plans to have one. But it's better than the Storm series, just my two cents.
