Troubles with noisy Ericsson T65 (or not)

17 January 2002
Many mobile phone related websites reported yesterday that the new Ericsson T65 had a "serious defect". They stated that it was a problem with the microphone making constant noise.
The origin for this news was probably the Swedish computer magazine Computer Sweden and many news sites printed this as their main headline yesterday.

All T65's we have sold have the "constant noise" defect. Some is noisier than others. It's obviously a construction fault said service technical Mikael Forsberg from Engstöm Telecom to Computer Sweden.

Representatives from Ericsson could not verify the situation, but promised to investigate the case.

Today head of Sony Ericsson Nordic division Roger Bolander confirms that there were some problems with the noise on the October shipment. We make statistics of how many faults that’s been reported for each of our models, and T65 does not stand out from the rest of our models in the December statistic Bolander said.

Vice director Anders Maazon from Geab, one of Sweden's largest mobile phone reseller with 53 stores in Sweden said it's not uncommon for new models from any manufacture to have faults. But he says noisy T65 has not been a problem for their customers. If there was a problem with the T65 I would have know and contacted Ericsson straight away. There could have been problems with some shipments. We have sold 2-3000 T65's and noisy phones have not been a problem for us ends Maazon.

As one user wrote on a Ericsson newsgroup: "One thing that hits me is: Why didn't I read anything about the noisy loudspeaker on the web or newsgroups before? Since I'm the owner of a T65, I'm special interested in news about this model. I did also read a lot of reviews of this phone before buying one, and none of them mentioned this problem."
