Hands on as per conbutts link:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E0YJKxUMXRI

Posted by Hawk12
Besides 960fps, anything else removed compared to x1?

Posted by DarkKrypt
Can't tell but here's specs wise comparison via gsmarena.

https://m.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=9840&idPhone2=9543

Posted by DarkKrypt
Gained band 25 and 34
(~80.9% screen-to-body ratio) vs 82%

128GB 6GB RAM no 64gb version
Back Cameras are the exact same, but gsmarena is saying 1080p@960fps hmm.
Selfie same cam

Posted by goldenface
Nice to see the return of the Compact but no mention of the Super Slo Motion on the official website.

Posted by DarkKrypt
@goldenface
Exactly what I mean gsmarena says 960fps
But official site doesn't, unless gsmarena is just assuming because of exact same specs...

Posted by rubik_cat
Seems like Sony use lower level Exmor RS sensor on 5.

No memory stack, No dual photo diode, No Optical SteadyShot™ No H.265 on 4K recording

Its not a Compact. It is still a huge phone. Slim it down aditional 10% to 143x62 mm. Then maybe, just maybe, I'll be intressted. Ideal, i think, would be 136x59 mm (additional 5% decrease) thats when we talk almost Xperia Ray size (111x53). Wich is still to this day the best one hand held phone i ever had. I do miss it sometimes and take it out just to look at it. Absoluty stunning.

You're right, of course, but it is 'Compact' compared to it's older sibling.

nothing compact...

yawn...

Xperia 5 promo video. I like it, even the product page is more dynamic with clips from this. I think it looks better than Xperia 1. X5 is more symmetrical on the front and the back glass is less curvy. The grey option looks better too. Pricing will make or break this phone. At 800 it doesn't have a chance imo.

Pity they didn't make it a 5G phone, it would have been good for PR

X5 next to XZ1 Compact.

Dual photo diode is mentioned in the camera features, as is OIS for the 26 and 52mm lenses.

From Mr Buks

· Xperia 1 has a higher screen size and Xperia 5 has a smaller screen size
· Xperia 1 does not support 30fps continuous exposure calculation
· Xperia 5 does not support 960fps ultra slow motion (CMOS changed)
· Xperia 1 battery is 3330mAh, Xperia 5 battery is 3140mAh

Other software feature differences should be aligned after the upgrade
If you want a small size phone, you can wait for it. 5
If you want to buy a Sony flagship, or Xperia 1

Just to ensure I fully understand, the Xperia 5 is a lesser version of Xperia 1?
Or are they meant to be variants?

Naming convention is all over the place here.

Posted by badassmam
So, this phone is more narrow than the S10 but taller. One would probably say that the it's probably as good as the S10 which is around the same price. It should've been OnePlus 7 price because let's be honest, the only reason you get this over the Xperia 1 is the smaller size. Flipping S10E is the king of compact phones this year.

Xperia 5 is decent but too expensive and no way compact. Would be interesting to know S10+, S10 and S10E sales against each other to know if there is a market there or not.

1080p low Hz display
No wireless charging
No jack
Flat screen without cuts or holes or anything that'd make the manufacturing harder/pricier
Plain old fingerprint sensor
No infrared face unlock or even an autofocus front camera that lacks 4K recording (low mp)

Yet they charge $800? Aside from aspect ratio this phone is not unique.
Without the earbuds it's not worth it. They should have priced it 750 max without the buds. I'm pretty sure I'll hear reviews say "It's a good phone but at that price it's hard to recommend. This and that is cheaper with more features. etc." If they could they should price it 699, so it's a good deal and people would be willing to try something new.

Anyone know a website that sells cases for the Xperia 5?
None on ebay or amazon

Posted by goldenface
I like the leather ones on the Sony Website but I'm guessing they'll be about £50.

Posted by M-Ali
Since there is no dram in xperia 5 that means there is no predictive capture

Posted by Hawk12
Type xperia 2 case on amazon.
There is one.
From Avalri
$12.99

Does it really use frost/matte glass?

850 euros.

Even with the buds that's a hard sell.

Posted by Hawk12
€800 in France and Finland + buds
€850 in Germany + buds
$800 in USA

ridiculously expensive

Posted by badassmam
Yes expensive but this is the strategy now, make fewer and sell at higher price to maximise profits. I think the Xperia 1 sold well last quarter so Sony won't lose as much this year. Obviously the Xperia 10 and Plus are total bullshit devices which is why first quarter results were terrible.

I'm really considering the Xperia 5 but my brain is telling me to wait until it's similar pricing to the Galaxy S10E before I can justify buying it. The S10E is great in the hand and the 5 is more narrow so you might just call it a Compact.

Posted by Hawk12
Only $50 more than s10e was released.
Well, considering iphone 11 pro 64Gb costs €300 more in Germany.
Not that bad.

You can get Xperia 1 for around £600 and S10E £500 on Ebay, new and unlocked so those are good prices, when the Xperia 5 comes down to £500 I'll go for it. My worry is that it becomes rare like the XZ2 Compact, I've had two of these both for £400 each.

Posted by sidneylopsides
The 1 is currently £606 on O2 UK, and £640 from EE UK.

The 5 has to be like £500 to make sense.

Posted by yuunanase
Of course! I got the 1 for €560 on launch day, so I expect 5 to be €500.

It is $200 cheaper than iphone 11 pro, still it wont sell more than 1%.
That is too sad.
😰

X5 = ufs 3.0 ☺️

The iPhone 11 Pro camera software is so sick, I'm truly amazed by all the options you have. Multi camera recording is madness, now YouTube videos are going to have video and reaction in one. The Xperia camera interface looks so dated in comparison. Since there's no super slow motion they better add a standard flipping slow motion.

Posted by RacSony
looks like Xperia 5 has UFS 3.0
https://sumahoinfo.com/?p=34846

Posted by DentyCracker
Gonna be hard to give up the super slo mo even though I only used it occasionally. Probably going to have to get the 1 instead when that price comes down

Posted by Hawk12
I did not like when they changed the UI of cam for XZ3.
I prefer the one brought with android 5.1.

Up/down or left/right depending on how you are holding it.
And diagonal for rear/front.

Anyone noticed that rear panel of X5 is flat while X1 is 2.5 or 3D?

I do not know if I posted one link here or another topic.
Article says they will keep xperia, no matter how much money they lose.

I hope for 2020, midranges use same design of flagships.
Just with simpler shell. Plastic or metal.
Like they did with M4, M5 and X.

GSMArena gave 4,4 ..
It scores 96h on their batery test.
They are so bias, did not even bother to show what new stuff CP has.
[ This Message was edited by: Hawk12 on 2019-09-18 17:49 ]

Posted by Ppl
They didn't put samples for X5 in their comparison tool either. (Gsmarena)

That's weird. Review looks rushed. Maybe since it is very similar to 1 they just wanted to get over with it or something.

But 96h is great.

Posted by sidneylopsides
I've got my 5. Its blue. Not had chance to do much with it yet, but the tweaks to Game Enhancer are good. Changing it to the bar that then hides itself, but is easy to pull down and grab a screenshot is nice.

Cinema Pro has been tweaked, the auto focus pull is nice. Not much else to report yet.

Most UK Retailers will be doing the headphones, and the big ones will have a lot more than 40 or 75.

Posted by badassmam
@sidneylopsides

Congrats, UK doesn't get blue until November according to Clove. We know it doesn't have 960fps slow mo but does it have any other slow mo mode?

Posted by sidneylopsides
I'm pretty sure CPW Will have it in blue from launch.

It has the old basic 120fps slow motion. That's all.

Posted by badassmam
@sidneylopsides

Thanks. I think I'm going to get one this Christmas actually.
