I think it would all depend on what's important to you. Music? Sound quality? Speakerphone? Usability? Button placement? UI? Size? Bundled headphones? Bang-for-buck?
Who knows, especially since the new ones are not yet released. I quite like the W302 (same as S302) simply because I like the design of the buttons. Its edges are blockier (less rounded) than my current phone though, which makes it a bit less comfortable in the hand and especially the pocket.
I also don't like blingy shiny buttons, especially if they are plastic silver-coated which wear away with use. But as for technical performance, UI responsiveness/ stability, camera performance, value-for-money, etc...I doubt anyone can answer unless the phones are released and reviewed in detail and have been on the market for at least a short time.

This time he's right. The W980 and the W902 have the best audio quality on the cell phone market (it's been tested).
As for which walkman I think it's the best - well, that would be the W980 until the W902 is released solely because of the sound quality.

the phones are not even released so how can anyone even test this? without a DSP how can these phones match phones with a DSP? W980 runs the exact same audio platform(if there is a SE audio platform) as the current SE phones.
the 'clear audio and deep bass' BS is basically what the HPM-77 will deliver.

That's BS.
Have a look at this video:

And here's a quote from the /reveals site:
"This phone (the W902) allows you to boost the base, tweak the treble and choose the music type with the equalizers - features that have been designed to give you a perfectly Clear audio experience.
This is the same superior sound quality as the newly launched W980 Walkman™ which was rated "best audio experience" this month, in a trial conducted in Germany by TESTfactory."

Excuse my ignorance (I don't use phones as Walkmans... YET), but isn't a dedicated DSP only good if you are using the EQ? Isn't the most important thing for sound the:
1) DAC and associated audio circuitry of the phone (amp, signal paths being free from interference, etc)
...in the overall sonic picture, assuming you never make use of EQ?
I couldn't care less about EQ, but I do care about good sound designed from the start without even touching EQ.
Sony has traditionally equipped its Walkmans with puny 5mW + 5mW (into 16ohm) amps that can sound OK with earbuds but are really not loud enough when you connect some full-size headphones with higher impedance. Do they do this on their Walkman phones?
I'm assuming the original poster wants the best sound quality from a Walkman phone and doesn't care about the rest?
Anyone tried full-size headphones on their Walkmans (like the Sennheiser HD595 or similar) that can comment on volume levels? Just curious...and I hope I haven't hijacked this thread too much.

best walkman (considering only sound) is w980i. Other wise w960i.
If features matter u (such as symbian= more programs), then get w960i. otherwise if u want a simpler fone with limited features then get w980i.

I totally agree. I have a w580 with other acoustic drivers and it rocks as far as sound quality it concerns.
Easily beats W890 i had before

I listen to my tunes with Pioneer HDJ1000 which has 50mm speaker driver with my K610i, swear to God i never put the volume to the max, too loud, i listen @ 6dots maximum. The sound is awesome (i'm talking about quality here, not sound pressure level)
My friend have a W980 and he really envy my phone.
Sorry 4 my english

@vlotnet
i have used planktronic headphones with w960i and compared it to n95. N it comes louder in w960i(even louder than its default headphone).
hope that helped u.

You're from headfi?

As for full size headphone, why not try those Grados? At 32ohms, it can be driven by my K800i to decent levels. (7 full dots out of the max of 8 dots)
HD595, 50ohms? A little difficult. Sure you will get decent volume (Max out on my K800i) but you will getting much less details and its fitted with a 6.3mm plug, it will be a severe strain on the fastport with the 6.3mm converter and 3.5mm converter attached. You better not be moving around if you intend to use this set-up.
Or better still, use an amp! But lol, no line out!

lol BTW, the 'decent level' I refered to is the level I normally listen to, which is a little louder than most people.
Posted by vlotnet
afbug,
thanks for that!
That's the thing with Sony; the anaemic outputs. They're not the only ones that do it, but yeah, it's hard to take 'hi-fi' seriously when most of their stuff can't drive decent headphones where their sound quality can be judged properly. I'm not from head-fi but been there and I disagree with most of what's said there

Earbuds are, on the whole, sub-par. I have the PX100 too (average impedance is 32ohms, apparently) and I find I want MOREEE volume from most of Sony's equipment. Their stuff is really only decent on 16ohm earbuds, which reach a decent level of volume, but sound like crap on the whole 'cause they are ... earbuds!
I also like my volumes to reach a bit more than the average person (like you), but I like it all sounding pretty damn good at those higher volumes.
Thanks to all those who answered.
Edit: Oh, btw... strain on Fast Port... yeah, I wouldn't listen with big phones anywhere except stationary at home (why with a Walkman, you ask? Well, I can go pretty much anywhere I want without a trail of cables). I also have one of those 3.5mm plug-to-3.5mm socket doohickeys as a flexible go-between so stuff is not damaged with Sennheisers big butt plug =)
