10 February 2008

Sony Ericsson’s new C702 Cyber-shot™ and C902 Cyber-shot™ deliver best-in class picture quality beyond just megapixels.

Barcelona, Spain – 10th February 2008 – Sony Ericsson today announced two high-performance additions to its popular Cyber-shotTM phone range with the launch of the C702 Cyber-shot™ and C902 Cyber-shot™. The two phones, packed with the latest camera technology, make it effortless to take perfect pictures of those spontaneous moments – day or night, at a bar or the beach – and instantly share them with friends and family.

“The two new Cyber-shot™ phones that we have announced today share certain characteristics. Both phones place ease-of-use and best-in-class picture quality at the heart of their designs,” said Sven Totté, Head of Imaging Marketing at Sony Ericsson. “Yet both appeal to different audiences. One is engineered to let you take more pictures in more places and the other is designed to look as stunning as the pictures it takes.”

Sony Ericsson C902 Cyber-shot TM – The image and style statement

- Slim Cyber-shot™ phone with unique slide-out lens cover. Camera-ready in an instant

- Stand out design – instantly recognisable

- 5.0 megapixel camera with Face Detection and Auto Focus. Always capture the best shot possible

- Illuminated camera touch keys. Intuitive guidance around the camera settings

The slim line C902 Cyber-shot™ will have everyone wanting to have their picture taken. Ultra-compact, stylish and with a unique lens cover that slides open to reveal the 5.0 megapixel Auto Focus camera, the C902Cyber-shot™ sports a camera performance beyond its sleek and slim looks. The phone’s lighting dramatically signals when you are in camera mode by switching from white to blue. The eight camera touch keys come to life and let you choose between camera modes, Photo Flash, Face Detection and Auto Focus, and more with just one touch without moving your finger from the shutter button.

Just shoot
With the C902 Cyber-shot™ you just need to slide open the active lens cover and shoot. The Face Detection and Auto Focus capability enables the camera to detect and focus on the face of your subject rather than the background, so that you can take sharp and high quality pictures of your friends.

Night shoot
With the C902 Cyber-shot™ you can be confident of getting the perfect shot. The phone incorporates the latest in lighting technology – Photo Flash – giving you better quality pictures even in low-light conditions. Also, a light solution has been added to the established BestPic™ feature – which lets you take nine photos in quick succession, choose the best and delete the rest. So now you can use BestPic™ wherever you are, perhaps even to capture the dance-floor action in a club!

Create your own multi-media slideshow
Use x-Pict story™ to add music and transitions to your gallery of photos and automatically create your own multi-media slideshow to share with your friends. Lights, music, action!

Store and share
The C902 Cyber-shot™ comes with a 160MB built-in memory – the equivalent of storage for up to 100 full resolution photos – plus the possibility to add even more memory with the Memory Stick Micro™ (M2) that can be bundled with the phone depending on the market.

Easy transfer wherever you are
You can transfer the images on your phone to your computer by using the CCR-70 M2 USB Adapter, also announced today. Save your photos to the phone’s memory card, remove it and pop it into the CCR-70. You then slot the card reader into your laptop and all your photos can be dragged across! Delete from your Memory Stick and you’re ready to go and fill it up again with more memories.

that's review does not look too good....

11mm think is really thin for the features this phone packs in. Its an attractive prospect if I didn't already have a k850i.

Decent handset... though not to sure about the sliding mechanism...????

How would it last the test of time...???

Cheers

the camera review isn't that good.
hope cam will be tuned up just fine in time for the commercial release

"C902 is a really elegant little bastard" LOL

"Assembly quality is great I just simply couldn’t make the device to go cracking"

The only thing putting me of this phone is the touch sensitive buttons. Do you think they will be playing up like we have seen on the K850?

This is one of the phones i'm thinking of buying. Its either the C902 or the W980

Can you still make full use of the cybershot menu with just the dpad? (ie: not the touch buttons)

Of course.

2' screen with 5mp camera? That is just terrible

Posted by bavlondon2
Its not too bad. The k800 was only 1.9 inches and I was fine with that. It just looks bad on this due to the way the touch sensitive buttons have been arranged around the screen as well as the lens cover mechanism.

Guys I dont remember how bad the K850 pics were prior to release but is that anything to go by in terms of how terrible the c902 pics are right now.

I consider the K850 to be pretty good (not quite n82 but stilll) but were they bad before launch? This bad????

If they sort out the pic quality I may go for the C902 but no way if they leave it as it is.

I don't seem to get your association. Why is it so bad?

Posted by bavlondon2
Its not bad at all. Nightblade do you think the C902 will by time of release produce pics as good as the K850?

At least as good as the K850. I mean, it would be downright irresponsible of SE to release a co-imaging flagship with such bad picture quality.

Posted by bavlondon2
Yeah your right. I think its just that those early pics look horrid so I have my fingers crossed. I have to say though I think the lens cover system is a lot better than on the k850. Just hope its not one that can get loose after a while.

Today 2' is below average IMO, think about it this way, would you wan't to admire your "5mp" pictures on such a screen? Or Watch movies and browse pictures and music with the media manager with such a screen? I know I would'nt

Posted by bavlondon2
The C902 is aimed at imaging not at all round multimedia consumption. Sure it has walkman interface but thats just standard now. 2.2 inches would have been better but thats SE for you.

I guess so.. making the phones crapper as usual. Kind of confusing. Any normal person would think they would aim to make their phones better. Oh well.

n95 8gb screen size or e61 for example, those are screens to watch movie, enjoy pix made by the cam. not only qualitywise, also according its size.

How would you be able to differentiate a 5MP from a 3MP photo on a QVGA screen? Frankly, you wouldn't even know if it's a VGA photo.

Posted by bavlondon2
Yeah 2inch screen is really fine just for that. People just moan becasue there will always be something bigger than that so they assume everything else MUST be of equal to that. If they can make sure the pic quality at least reaches K850 standard then im sold. The more and more I watch videos on youtube the more I realy like the phone and design.

Is this the same lens/sensor as used on the k850 or is it smaller?

Posted by DCUK7
This phones makes you wonder how attractive the K850 could have been if they hadn't rushed it to market!

Posted by bavlondon2
Yeah its really slim and well made in terms of design. Have any here actually used/held a C902 yet? I know obviously Laffen did I saw his clip on youtube but SE had all the new handsets at their new London flgship store a few months ago so im guessing some used it there too. Anyone here?

They still have the C702 but no longer the 902 unfortunatley.

This has the accelerometer aswell right?

You're saying that because you use a K810 which also has a minute screen. 2.0 is a joke and nothing else, nokia and samsung have them in their cheap low end phones. 2.4'' is the standard these days.

Posted by bavlondon2
Yeah but its just the way SE want to go down. The fact that they use it more doesnt mean everyone wants it. Im quite happy with 2inch screen to be honest as my phone doesnt double up as a hardcore video player for me. On the contrary whilst I have had big and bulky phones like the N93i I still prefer small and slim models.

Didnt you feel weird using a 2.0inch screen after using a P1?

have never understand the point with super big screens ?

as long i dont use my phone for TV & Movies, i much rather have a smaller cell phone (with a little smaller screen, like 2.0" or 2.2") who fits my pocket nicer then a big, clumsy phone.

Then it means you think W910 is also clumsy, because it has a 2.4'' screen. How about p1 with its 2.6'' screen? That must be even more clumsy

Posted by plankgatan
yes i do. BUT w910 have one vantage, its ultra slim, but yes i do prefer smaller cell phones

for me is the size of a cell phone really important (its just boring to have a big, clumsy phone in your pants), and second, who in hell watch there photos (or even worse, movies) on his cell phone ???

(watching movies on a 2.4" or 2.6" screen is ridiculous i think)
i watch them on my 17" laptop. there i at least see how the quality really is, etc.

yeah but you've never owned a phone with a big screen, have you?

Ultimatley its down to what you use your phone for. When I had my K800 it was just for pics so that was fine. When I had my N95 and N93i they were for pics and watching vids. I have an ipod now so dont need a phone with such a big screen. It should have really been at least 2.2 inches to keep it inline with the other current imaging flagship (k850) but there is nothing we can do about that.

Drop the wit and just answer the question. My point was since you've never used a phone with a big screen, you dont know what it feels like. I was fine with my W800 but since i used my N71, 2.0'' screens seem far too small to work comfortably with and thats the case with many many people.

Posted by bavlondon2
QVGA can we all just agree that not everyone is automatically more satisfied with a larger screen. For others, other factors are more important.

Posted by NightBlade
@QVGA:
OK, but what has that got to do with the cam. being 5Mp and the screen 2"?

I have owned both a 2,6"(m600) phone and 1,9"(k810). And i can tell you that i didnt get more satisfied with the 2.6", it only akes the phone bigger. The only thing i use my screen for is to see where in the menu i am, with contact that are selected and read text messages. And for those activites its not a big deal if you "only" have a 1,9" screen.

Posted by bavlondon2
Exactly. If the screen res in the bigger screen phones were say VGA then that would make a difference but as the previous poster says it just makes the phone bigger. If your watching videos then thats obviously different but for general stuff it doesnt make a difference.

Posted by Mizzle
I've used everything from 1.8 inches to 3.5 inches, and 2.2 is the optimal if you want both sharpness and size. What do you say now, QVGA?

Thats almost what i said, 2.4''. And there's a noticable difference in 2.2 and 2.0

Posted by Mizzle
You do realise that there's a larger difference between 2.2 inches and 2.4 inches, than 2.0 inches and 2.2 inches, right? Let me remind you that you said that 2.2 inches is "nearly" 2.4 inches.

Thats the biggest contradiction I have heard! You have said so many times you love the w960. What size screen is that? 2.6 inch. I guess thats just a clumsy brick aswell..

Did he say specifically that he liked the W960 due to its larger screen?

You're intentionally trying to find faults in what i'm saying and running away from the point.
Let me remind you what the point was. 2.0 inch screen is too small, whether anyone here likes that or not. Majority is not automatically right. 2.2'' is not the perfect balance, thats your assumption and your opinion. Most phones coming these days are 2.4'' or more.

Posted by bavlondon2
Most Samsungs and Motos are 2.2 I think.

Posted by QVGA
If you take a look at their imaging flagships you'll see that Samsung F480 has a 2.8'' screen, G810 and G800 both have 2.4 inch screen.
Moto's imaging flagship, ZN, has a 2.4'' screen.
Nokia's imaging flagship, N95 and N81 have 2.8 and 2.4'' respectively.

Posted by hgautam
@QVGA and others,

A 2" inch screen is fine if the phone is small and compact, like K750 (only had a 1.8" screen though), etc.

But depending on the phone's size, the screen size should be in the right proportion... Looking at C902 size, the maximum it could have had was 2.2" but due the shortcut buttons, they could only put in a 2" screen... That's the main reason many here doesn't like the phone, including me...

2.4" may be a standard these days but no 2.4" screen phone can come in a compact size, it can be slim but some people prefer compact phone even if it's a high end or has a 5MP camera... For them 2" is just fine...

Those who don't like the screen size of C902 just may not buy it... And if their no. is good, C902 might not sell, and then maybe SE may not try to repeat the same mistake in their High-Ends... There is a saying, "You don't learn till you fall"... Lets hope for the best...
