Olympic Gold Phones

7 August 2004 by axxxr
“Olympic Gold Phones,” which were released as limited editions for the 2004 Athens Olympics Games by Samsung Electronics, is gaining great popularity in local Internet auctions.

According to the Internet Auction (auction.co.kr), six units of the Gold Premium Phones (SCH-E470/SPH-E3200/SPH-E3250), of which only 1000 units are available, were put up for an online auction, and customer’s enthusiastic responses forced the bidding price to go up above W1 million.

Samsung, an official sponsor of the 2004 Athens Olympics, released the phones in two models -- "Special Phone" and "Premium Phone." Among them, the Premium Phone is inscribed with the official emblem of the Athens Olympics and gilt with 18K gold around the LCD monitor. The six phones are inscribed with special serial numbers like "Athens 0001" and "Athens 0002," making them more valuable for collection.

In particular, the bidding price for one of the six phones, a handset inscribed with "Athens 0001," soared to W2.20 million, attracting more than 40 bidders in just one day. The other five also have prices above W1 million.

Auction and Samsung Electronics will give all proceeds to an Olympic athlete who fails to win a medal, but nevertheless leaves a great impression or delivers deep emotions to Korean people after conducting an Internet vote.

Prior to this, Samsung’s “Matrix Phone,” used by Keanu Reeves in the movie “The Matrix Reloaded,” was sold for about W3 million (US$2,325) or five times the original price, through E-bay last year.
