Ericsson to demonstrate commercial HSDPA
10 February 2006 by axxxr At 3GSM World Congress in Barcelona, February 13-17, Ericsson will demonstrate its commercial HSDPA system supporting speeds of up to 3.6 Mbps with pre-commercial devices from several manufacturers.
Ericsson's HSDPA system is ready to support speeds of up to 3.6 Mbps,but the maximum speed for commercial devices supporting HSDPA today is 1.8Mbps. Mikael Bäck, Vice President of WCDMA Radio Networks, Ericsson, says: "It is great that we can already show the full capabilities of our commercial system today. And we are only a step away from an easy software upgrade that will allow speeds of up to 14.4 Mbps and support for enhanced uplink."The support for HSDPA at 14.4 Mbps and enhanced uplink, HSUPA,will be available in the second half of 2006. HSDPA, the first step in the evolution path of WCDMA, offers operators more than double the system capacity and reduces the response time for interactive services. It also gives operators the ability to introduce attractive new services such as mobile broadband. Mobile broadband ensures access to e-mail, on-line music,the internet and mobile TV anywhere. By exploiting the capabilities of HSDPA in the network, the services will have all the necessary prerequisites for mass-market uptake. WCDMA is the dominant 3G technology, selected by eight of the world's ten largest operators. Ericsson expects that, by 2007, as many as 80 percent of all mobile subscribers will be served by the GSM/WCDMA family, in which Ericsson holds the leading position with a 35 percent market share. www.ericsson.com
