Sony Ericsson unveils the new V800 – a megapixel camera phone for Vodafone’s 3G consumer services - Video telephony, enhanced imaging and superior entertainment in a sleek compact design
22 September 2004
Sony Ericsson announces the launch of its 3G phone, the sleek V800, the first true convergence handset in the world. Designed to deliver a wide range of services over Vodafone’s new high speed mobile network, the V800 offers an unparalleled combination of features in a stylish, compact phone. Everything about the V800 tells you that 3G has arrived. From the highly fashionable, simple design of the delightfully small and light handset to the comprehensive set of features and straightforward operation, it’s clear that the promise of high speed mobile communication can now be realised.
The imaging capabilities of the V800 and its ease of use transform the experience of using a mobile phone. And video calls are easy with QuickShare™ - just one press of the dedicated video call button is all that’s required to initiate a call. The 1.3 Megapixel camera provides high quality pictures through its ingenious Motion Eye™ rotating lens that lets the user point towards themself or, with a simple movement of the thumb, redirect it to share the view. Perfect for showing where you are during a video call. In low light, the inbuilt photo light provides illumination to capture video or still images.
With the phone flipped open the high resolution 2.2 inch colour TFT 262k screen displays the intuitive user interface and also the phone’s images or those of incoming calls. When the phone is closed a smaller screen on the outside becomes the viewfinder and displays the caller ID and the picture associated with that person – in colour, naturally. The user can even put wallpaper separately on both screens: football strip front on the internal display with the back on the external display, for example. Video, still images and sound can be sent or received in MMS messages and the phone can also receive streamed video.
The V800 gives great entertainment and is equipped to make the most of the ‘Vodafone live!’ services. Consumers can enjoy content streamed from the Vodafone live! portal, including video - live sports pictures are expected to be a big hit - and music. The V800’s rapid browsing enables users to gain access to pages quickly, and when they want to download content, whether it’s pictures, music, mail, news, ringtones or games, it’s fast. The phone features a superb 3D Java gaming engine and brings multiplayer gaming, either online or via Bluetooth, to a new level of interactivity.
And games – there’s a selection included and many more available for download from Vodafone live! - are more fun on the V800 high resolution screen.
The V800 has an integral music player and can play previously stored tracks from Memory Stick or download tracks at high speed and set them as ringtones. The phone’s mediaplayer makes it easy to manage tracks and its folder system enables the user to create playlists.
The V800 supports multi-tasking, allowing users to make the most of the phone’s functionality by having more than one application open at a time. Users can, for example, call a travel agent to discuss holiday ideas and simultaneously download pictures of their holiday offers.
The V800 is also the first truly global phone and can access 3G services all around the world – it will be sold in Europe (V800) and also in Japan (Vodafone 802SE). And with its triband and GPRS capabilities, it can stay connected just about anywhere. Weighing in at just 128g, and measuring no more than 102 x 49 x 24mm, the V800 cleverly combines a great feature set with well thought out ergonomics and a clean, elegant design. The V800 is supplied with a 32MB Sony Memory Stick Duo, and supports Memory Stick PRO Duo up to 1GB, providing masses of storage for video, still images, music and games. Locally, customers can also connect by Bluetooth, Infra Red and microUSB, which used in conjunction with applications such as Adobe’s PhotoShop Album, provides a great route to mass storage.
Jan Wareby, Corporate Executive Vice President and Head of Sales & Marketing at Sony Ericsson sums up the V800’s appeal, “The speed of 3G networks opens up a wealth or new opportunities for users, mobile phone operators and content providers. We feel that for many users, especially early adopters, spontaneity and fun are the keys to acceptance. The Sony Ericsson V800 has been designed to stimulate, surprise and satisfy young adults whose active lifestyles demand stylish and effective new technology.”

designed for vodafone eh?

even though I am a vodafone customer their 3G prices are completely over the top at this time......... don't think I'll be hopping on board any time soon.
I do like it's being a 'world' phone but why are there 2 model numbers? Does that mean it's actually going to be 2 phones instead of one or is it the same but marketed under a different name in japan?

Phone itself looks fairly promising

Way to go!

I just attached a picture, sorry, I forgot to include it originally

sad it is for vodafone only...do u think se will make a unbranded version?
Posted by Vlammetje
i doubt it tbh. I suspect there are some firm contractual agreements here.
Posted by Sammy_boy
So does this mean that the phone will only be available on Vodafone, i.e. there won't eventually be an Orange, O2, or any other network version? A bit like with the Sharp GX10/20/30?
Oh dear, they'll ruin it with all their horrible icons and firmware!

Posted by jcwhite_uk
If the phone is designed for Vodafone then I seriously doubt if it will be available unlocked or for another network.
Posted by masseur
although you can get the Sharps unlocked for any network, and indeed by unbranded housings on ebay

At the moment the only people who can unlock a K700 are the Service providers and

ah i can see the image now

I'm surprised the phone isn't bright red

I'm quite convinced this phone will not come unlocked. I think Vodafone must've paid good money for it's development and they will probably pa for the marketing as well. I'd guess there will definitely be some sort of agreement that will keep this phone a voda exclusive.
All the same I do hope

It's all good and well to get a good start on the 3G market.... in fact I think it may prove to be a brilliant move...... but I am not very eager to see lots of provider specific phones myself.

Im guessing theres more money in it for SE if they work direct with vodafone right?
I'd have thought releasing a handset to the general market would bring you much larger sales though. oh well never mind
Posted by Vlammetje
i think it's about bringing one

Posted by themarques
Oh man waking up to bad news is never a good thing....damn vodafone.
Posted by Elrond
Looks good, but why Vodafone branded? Maybe they will release a similar 3G phone, but after a long time.
Posted by mswallis
One good thing, it does support Memory Stick PRO Duo's!

i think it looks good, the features are good and i'm sure there will be non-vodafone handset at some point?
Posted by Millenniumcult
That's to bad. Only Vodafone and it's a SE. Crap!
Buit hey, the Z1010 is getting a bit old, and if SE does not build a 3G phone on the same platfrom as the V800 then I'll be amazed. Or is this phone built on the same platform as the Lg U8110 (wich is the same as the Z1010 btw)?
Posted by Elrond
Maybe after 2-3 months. Who knows, maybe soon, maybe later.
Posted by shinyspoon
In Japan, se only make phones for the network such as au, ntt, and vodafone. Looks like they're starting to do the same thing here.
Posted by Rva@
I strongly belive that there will be a plus (v800i or v810) or the same phone w. upgrades (v900i) just in an other color and slightly altered dessign , but not three or more month ! Not even vodaphone is rich enough to pay SE for an exclusive toprange phone... and what about the rest of the world who dont have voda networks ?! Rva
Posted by Vlammetje
exclusive vodafone preferred network roaming

Posted by Krubach
I think we can get a pattern here.
'V' series will be Vodafone phones only series.
Posted by masseur
that doesn't seem to work with the F500i though

Posted by Krubach
Well, a 'V' can turn into an 'F' if i have no front teeth.
And it'll sound the same.

As you said it is RUMOURED Z1020....the number is also a RUMOURED. It is the same phone.
From what I see, this 3G phone should have a different model number too when it is on sell for other non Vodafone network. (Just like F500....ends up being K500)
maybe it will be Z800 for "3" and other 3G network....i am looking forward for Malaysia Maxis's 3G.....Ericsson is the main 3G supplier and they promise to ship around a few million of 2.5G and3G phone to Malaysia in the next 3 yrs.

nice, if SE can get this to be the launch fone for all the 3g servises in the uk then i think it will go a long way.
Posted by Evoque
Here's an optimistic theory - There are two Voda logos on the front...the red one is a perfect fit for the SE logo...which means the phone is due out as a Sony Ericsson! Yes, its heart-breaking and Im trying very hard...

@RSF: Thanks for your excellent live pics of the marvel!!
You'd get three extra kisses from me for some pics of the V800's screen!

Cheers,

That is a nice looking Phone

Posted by reallysecretfox
the problem there is that the camera on the s700 is not that great, i mean you can see from the other images i posted!! i'll post something later on today, but remember that this is an early version of the phone with early software.
i also have access to almost all of the other phones that vodafone are going to launch.
The samsungs are really nice, and the Sharp 902 is amazing, but as usual with Sharp, the Bluetooth support is useless!
as you have seen from the images, the V800 looks similar in size to the Z1010, but it sits in the had so much nicer. it's no where near as bulky in real life.

@RSF: You mean you've got all of these 3g phones in your hands?
How are those Motorola's and got some Pics of the Samsung z110v?
By first impression I'd say the SE V800 is the coolest of them all. Do you agree after fondling around with all the phones?
Is the V800's case by chance of metallic nature?
cheers,
hymie

YES, all those phones, i've been using them all for some time now! hehe
unfortunatly, the V800 case is entirely plastic!
the motorolas are not bad, and i'm not a motorola fan.
infact they are all impressive phones.
I will try and put up some images of the Samsung in a while. the samsung is a really nice phone. the camera pops out from the side, which is cool.

From the post made by Bengalboy, the S700 pictures look very good (sharp and clear). He probably has a later version of S700 HW/SW than you have.

The white one is awesome!
But its locked to Vodafraud

Where's the MS DUO PRO slot?
Posted by reallysecretfox
it is under the back cover. Here have a look
Here is a look at the new battery they are using, it is more like a nokia battery than the plasic encased ones SE currently use
If you want any more pics let me know,

@RSF: You're the man, RSF!! Thx for insight pics!
I wonder if you could re-do some of those outside, in natural light as the S700 cam produces much more crisp pictures then.
Whats the capacity of the battery btw?
How good turn the pics from the V800 megapixel cam out? Better / equal to S700's one?
cheers,
hymie

Jolly good, but a bit of a bad show with the Vodafone nonsense.
Posted by Krubach
Pity you have to "dismantle" the phone to get the Stick In/Out...
