figured i'd start the official thread for the new release instead of polluting the rumor thread.

PRODUCT WEBSITE: https://www.sony.co.uk/smartphones/products/xperia-1m6

here's a nice youtube video i found that takes a really good look at the camera capability.

it seems many have been upset about the interface of the app, but clearly, once you've gotten used to it, you can produce some fantastic photos and video.

I hope the 24mm lens can go as close focusing distance at 4 cm because it was not stated anywhere.

Also wishes for UFS 4.0. But looking at the benchmark score from the review, likely not..

I've seen a few reviews quoting the 4cm macro feature. GSMA has some good close up pics.

the macro shots look incredible. i would get a lot of use out of that feature tbh, but that screen downgrade really hurts.

that was just tripod. Not that screen connected to phone to use rear cam as selfie. For example mark 3 cannot use it, just pro-i/mark4/mark5

S24 ultra for countries out of US will likely use exynos chip. A factor for your consideration. Overall is your call though.

Sony considering making more scarlet color and also other colors!!

Had a chance to use 1VI for about four days, it was a loaner from my friend. I didn't use it as a cellphone but rather as a camera.

- Video recording is utter garbage, how in the hell you go from methodical Video Pro and Cinema Pro to something so this really? Can't adjust the gain, doesn't have 25fps, no audio input adjustment. no level indicator It's just horrible. But not as horrible as new app UI

- Video tab UI is the worst I've ever seen. Most of the UI elements are inside my viewfinder. What the hell is up with a black header that has useless options such as torch and "quick" swap of resolution and fps? Also torch is again present when you tap the settings icon.

- When you want to adjust the temperature and brightness you have to tap on the screen that was like the most unintuitive feature of old Xperia camera app back in the day of XZ, no one knew it existed unless they tapped on the screen by accident. The worst part is when you tap on the screen you lock subject tracking so once you are done with temp/exposure sliders you have to tap tracking rectangle to disable it.

- There are no focus and AE lock button in Photo Pro tab, you have to half press the shutter button to engage it. Also when you do half a press some icons on screen dim more than others. That tells you they didn't pay attention to UI at all. For example, mode letter P/S/M will not dim down as flash icon.

- You can't just throw in bunch of stuff on a viewfinder and expect people to frame their shots properly.

- Camera UI is half-assed by some amateurs. I get it they wanted to replicate Pixel and iPhone type of experience but then at least replicate it properly and make it better

- Display is worse in every possible sense compared to 1IV/V I couldn't care that it's brighter it's the only perk that it has over a display on 1IV/V

- Device is wide enough not to be a one hand device but not wide enough to be considered two hands device

I cannot believe they would release a phone with such a half finished camera app. It just tells me it was a last-minute decision to scrap Video Pro. New Camera app doesn't have a single feature of Cinema Pro inside so it's a blatant lie when they said new app is Photo Pro, Video Pro and Cinema Pro combined into one. It's not! Not even all Photo Pro features are in there and there is no single feature of Video Pro and Cinema Pro to be found except the looks

It's typical of Sony to half-arse this year and after a few generations they make something decent otherwise there's always something wrong like overheating, bad night shots, the super slow motion came and then went, the tall aspect came and went, and so on. They throw ideas around and wait to see what sticks.

Product planers don't think hard enough. Here is a perfect solution to cater to both casuals and pros

1. Xperia 1VI should have had shutter button as well as circular shortcut hw button (like PRO-I)
2. Two camera apps: New Camera app found on 1VI and Pro bundle app that combines Photo Pro, Video Pro and Cinema Pro into one icon instead of three icons
3. Long press camera button launches new Camera app. Long press on shortcut button launches Pro App and with every click on the shortcut button it cycles between Photo Pro, Video Pro and Cinema Pro. Long press again shortcut button to return to new Camera app.

That's it! Simple as that. Everyone is satisfied!

Remember I said new cam app was 💩?

Now you guys see.

Gsmarena photos show huge sharpening applied and awful color science, very iphone of them.

I have zero idea why pre-orders in Taiwan are so higher than mark 5, far better phone.

They keep on switching focus in camera department and here is a brief retrospective:

Posted by badassmam
I'm a total camera novice but the way I see it, Sony camera department should not be involved with Xperia. They have different objectives and budgets. Sony cameras are specialist devices, you can't have that on a mainstream phone. From Xperia, you can't put a specialist camera in a phone without making so many compromises that it turns out rubbish anyway. The Xperia Pro is garbage.

Xperia needs a hard reset again. Bezels on the tall aspect ratio was fine, but now with the standard aspect ratio, the camera punch hole looks better. Camera apps are a mess. The UI looks so dated, no Sony style at all, just a mess of ideas all round. Also, new phones for that price have to compete against this year's flagships, but it has to be better than last year's ones that have had a price cut. There's no reason to get an 1vi over 1v at all, none whatsoever. The price of Sony phones is outrageous. I tried the Nothing 2 and found the experience so sleek and smooth, also tried the Rog 8 and thought wow, multimedia experience on it was amazing.

I think, in all Xperia 1 series, Xperia 1V is the best in every department. The photos from Xperia 1V always incredibly better than all competition. I couldn't find any fault with it. I skip Xperia 1VI because of that. Completely satisfied with 1V. I think if they just take it from there and add more features or introduce new lenses will be sufficient.

well, so far mark 6 in Japan has highest evaluation of all 6 gens, except photos (I agree mark 5 does better).
I am using 40 Neo that costed me equivalent to 329 euros (caneel bay, I was gonna get Soothing Sea but in person it is way lighter than photos I did not like) , so far very satisfied, I just wish it did not have screen hole and had imx776 instead of ov50a.

10 mark 6 should have been more like Edge 50 Pro, even if sony had to ask €560-580.

With 7g3, 8/256GB ddr5, usb 3.1, imx890 (24mm) + imx563 (16mm) + imx663 (60mm), hdr screen.

Sony has posted a video to compare battery endurance of mark 6 vs mark 5.
Video playback test.

When mark 5 got to 0%, mark 6 still had 68%.

Is this mainly because of the screen? Sounds amazing.

good to see you're still hanging around these parts. ha. i am definitely not as active but my x1mII probably needs an update soon. was hoping for something better with the VI but i'm disappointed they got rid of the 4K and aspect ratio, which i really enjoy.

i hope they make it up to use with the VII. or i may have to consider looking at pixel phones or god forbid... galaxy.

Posted by goldenface
Me too. I had the 1 iv then lost it on holiday so now I'm contemplating my next purchase and wondering if I'd miss the screen and notification light, which I am used to. The new macro is a big draw though.

Posted by moogoo
what? they got rid of the notification light too!?

the new telephoto macro is definitely a big draw. but i don't think that alone makes up for what they've taken away.

will they bring things back with the VII? who knows. but I really hope so.

damn that looks good. it's a shame no phone these days is nice enough to go caseless so you can actually enjoy the pretty colors they can come in. remember when we could use our phones without worrying about cases? able to enjoy the design and colors as they were intended.

Posted by goldenface
There wasn't much need for cases before because the phones were so small and light that there wasn't much damage when dropped on the floor, compared to what we have now.
