Hi everyone.Welcome to 2018 Edition of Xperia rumors thread.I'll keep updating and improving the first post gradually.

Reliability rating of rumors
XR1 -Almost certainly fake
XR2 -unreliable source or bad track
XR3 -likely to happen
XR4 -very likely to be on spot
XR5 -Almost certain info-known insider info

Tech Events(likely announcements)

CES 2018:7 -12 January

MWC 2018 : 26 February - 1 March

IFA 2018: 31-5 August-September

Rumours:

XR5: super flagship with 128GB internal storage and 6GB RAM will likely carry a "PRO" model name and will cost approx $950 USD.

XR4:New flag with new design and new name will carry impressive camera

High chance of OLED screen coming next year

XR4:next year's flagship sensor is basically the same IMX400 but with a lower aperture most likely 1.8 no mention of OIS yet but that doesn't mean it won't feature just no info on it yet.

You should put all the info you got from your anonymous friend in the first page.

Posted by josephnero
yep trying to do that but first I want to make sure no one else wants to run the thread

Massive thanks for taking on the new 2018 thread. Good luck.

Regarding the new flagship. Sony Mobile already had an Xperia PRO in its previous line up. If there is going to be a new naming convention, I'm wondering what this new Flagship will be called.

Posted by XperiaJunkie
Well done on the 2017 thread and I'm sure 2018 will be even better again. 😀

Hi guys..

Someone here said there will be 2 high end phones. Like last MWC.
The " Pro" seems to be the new name of Premium.
So, the " Pro" would be added to the name like Premium has been.

I think the Premium/Pro should have more stuff different , not only the 4K screen.
Maybe an exclusive camera, more storage, front led flash.

If someone here has contact with Sony people, please suggest whute color for glass phones.
You do not see scratches nor fingerprints.
I am not fan of frost glass of Z5, it looks kinda gray.
But Z3, M4, M5 and Z3+ white look amazing.

Scariest and lamest joke of this Halloween: Sony mobile is closing up. Lmao

Posted by josephnero
Well we know that Sony will continue to use the same colour for front and back of the phones unlike Samsung and Apple to name a few. And that there will be a color called sonic black. That's all we know about the color for now

Thank Josephnero for hosting the 2018 thread! Looking forward to more reliable flowing in.

20MP, 1/2" , 1.65 micron .....
Sounds interesting...
I do not deny I'd like to see 1/1.7" 23MP .

This is a interview with someone important at Sony Mobile.
Question no.7 may be what many here have been curious about..

Will this be introduced at the MWC in the new Premium?

Stop taking Nodar seriously guys... Ignore his "rumors" linking to his website...

Posted by Glyptho
Hi guys,
I'm new here. Been following this thread(2017) since a couple of weeks and thought I would pop in.
So, seeing the numbers giving by Nodar, my brain was bugging. So I made some calculations to verify my thoughts and it's seems impossible that a sensor of 1/2 can have 1.65 photosites. It's either its a 20Mpx with 1.24 micron photosites or that it is a 11.3Mpx with 1.65 micron photosites. These calculations are according to the dimensions of 1/2 sensor I found on https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wi[....]le_of_sensor_formats_and_sizes

Anyway, hi! And thanks for the 2018 thread josephnero.

1/1.7" sensor would be too big to fit in a slim smartphone. 1/2" with OIS would not fit either. 1/2" with no OIS but with

Posted by Moe87
@penguino

there is a patent of a new sensor.
Built-in lenses.
It is much thinner than regular sensors.

1/2" would be only 3.2% bigger than imx220 ( z1, z2, z3, z4).

What did we say was the rumoured screen size of the new X PRO again? If it's 5.5" in a smaller form it might tempt me to do away with my Compact / Compact tablet combo. Although I do love the one-handedness of the Compact.

Posted by josephnero
Well no certain info but most likely >than 5.5

Posted by Moe87
Note 5 is 2mm shorter than XZP.
It has a 5.7" screen.
So if they use a bit bigger screen, body can be almost the same.
So battery size does not need to be sacrificed.

Posted by Fisher
@Moe87
According to GSMArena Note 5 has ~75,9% STBR and new Sony flagship is said to have around 80% so it should be even smaller with 5,7". We don't know its screen ratio yet, do we?

Posted by Moe87
@fisher

I remember to read here something like 78-80%.
But nobody knows exactly screen size.

Or they can also keep the 5.46" so the ppi still be 807.
Same screen with smaller bezel leads to smaller body.

No matter if they use OLED or LCD Active Full Vision ( new JDI LCD).
Those screens are thinner than regular LCD.
So, more space to keep same battery even inside smaller body.

@Fisher

Note5 is two years old (soon to be three). We're talking about 2018 flagship.

Posted by Moe87
@penguino

the N5 is just an example.
We wonder if the " Pro" has 5.5 + XZ1 size or bigger screen + XZP size

There are rumors that Broadcom will bid 100 billion dollars for Qualcomm. All I can say is freaking WoW

Interesting, I just saw the news in my feed also. thought I was wondering what will happen if Qualcomm & AMD merged in one company

Posted by josephnero
Well overall monopoly isn't good for consumers

Posted by HxH
Apart from legal frenzy with Apple & Co, Qualcomm also still in a move to acquisition of NXP the deal worth $47 billions.

$100 Billions deal is lovely but I think total worth shall be no less than Verizon buyout share from Vodafone ($130b)

anyway anti-trust law will hit them hard.

*****************

AMD deal will have no go, x86 license from Intel has not allowed to change it hand
and it likely in same treatment that Intel has x64 license from AMD.

Posted by Xajel
@HxH

The x86 license is just non-transferable meaning, if Qualcomm will acquire AMD then they will lose the x86 license, but if AMD bought Qualcomm ( which they can't ) or merge or joined forces like forming a new company which then uses AMD's custom chips ability then they can do marvels...

I don't know actually about merging, but making alliances or forming new companies is not a problem...

the x86 license includes a cross-license also, any one who creates new features or extensions like SSE, MMX, 3D Now!, and AMD's x86-64 both can get the technology without further licensing or fees...

One of the reasons Intel's failed in their 64bit Itanium was that it was not based on x86, nor it had any compatibility or something & to run x86 code the OS had to emulate an x86 processor which resulted in severe performance hit. It was not suitable for desktops as 99% of apps was 32bit only and will face performance hit with it. being a non-x86 extension, AMD couldn't use it in any of their designs. so they developed x86-64. which was just an extension, fully compatible with the original x86 (x86-32 like what some like to name it).. and being available in desktop CPU's with same cost as other desktop platforms ( even lower compared to Intel ), and then having major OS support from Microsoft, Linux, Unix, etc... made Intel adapt it which made it even more appealing to developers to develop for.

If the x86 license drops, it will be disaster, the current x86 architecture is heavily contributed by both Intel and AMD, no company can make a product work without the use of other companies IP's. so If Intel invalidated the license. they also should stop selling all x86 CPU's because all will have AMD's IP which they will loose their license. They will just sue AMD and demand them to stop selling x86 CPU's without cancelling the whole license.

Anyway, Broadcom plan is now in motion, $130b offer for Qualcomm.

https://sumahoinfo.com/xperia[....]s-similar-to-xperia-xz-premium

Interesting.
It shows XZ1 has graphite sheet too instead of heat pipes.
Exactly like XZ Premium.
Also the cpu has been moved to the center, away from the camera.

Guys I have a doubt..
The waterproofing is different from the Z/M phones, isn't?
I mean the way it is applied.

New camera UI on the R1 Plus, could we be be seeing part of the new design overhaul here?

Would kind of make sense to launch the new camera UI on phone without much exposure so they can iron out the issues for when it launches on a flagship next year.

https://sumahoinfo.com/xperia-xz-premium-vs-iphone-x-speed-test

On android 8 0 the Premium is stronger than ever.
Most of apps were loaded faster on XZP. Even some games.
The images on Premium look better than on iphone. Article's writer thinks so...

Posted by moogoo
not sure why you psted this in the rumors section, but i agree. oreo on my XZP is awesome. wish there were some features implemented, but if this is a sign of how sony is doing software going forward, i have high hopes for the 2018 line. can't wait to see the new design language. sony should make an essentially bezelless phone with a camera that blows everyone except maybe google (i don't think anybody can win against google's machine learning based image processing), out of the water. and this sentiment should be shared by everyone, not just sony lovers like us. when sony releases a flagship device that the reviewers at the verge can't stop raving about, is when you know sony has done everything right. i personally think sony is capable. just a matter of whether they do it or not.

i look forward to 2020 when it'll be time for my upgrade

Posted by Moe87
I just consider it very interesting.
It is nice to see that Sony can extract full power of cpu.
Android is much heavier than iOS, but SD835 can still deliver same performance ( if you use Sony, Htc, Motorola or OnePlus)

If they really bring :

- 4K 60fps
- Full HD 960 fps
- Pixel shifting
- Fastest performance
- New imx
- STE oled or STE lcd 4K hdr
- 128GB ufs

Then it will be fun to see some tech sites looking for excuses to point a flaw..

Edit: just saw this https://fccid.io/PY7-08608T/RF-Exposure-Info/SAR-Report-3623674

The article I got this from says there is a code of battery size, seems like code means 3200 mAh.
