Sony's Xperia Z5 Premium Has An Absurd 4K Display

http://www.theverge.com/2015/[....]nys-xperia-z5-premium-specs-4k

Posted by Tsepz_GP
I like it

Not sure if I am happy with 3GB RAM though, when other Android competitors are using 4GB RAM.

Lets see what the reviews say.

If Sony have managed to tame the Snapdragon 810 while running a 4K display with no overheating I will be very impressed.

They are on the correct path though, it looks awesome.

Finally a true flagship from sony.. Old good times becomes reality . Good Job Sony !!

Looks like a real contender. Has nice specs.

careful Tsepz.. that extra 8grams over the iphone might snap your wrist!

I'm with you on the 3GB ram. I wish they had gone with 4gb just so that i would not even be a point of discussion. Tech reviewers like to pick on Sony and it will be a talking point whether or not it makes a difference.

Sigh.. If i had a 4K TV, i would probably be more excited and jump on this.. i wonder if american carriers will pick it up.

Guys, any one saw a video for the fingerprint in action ?.. if not yet then share whenever anyone see please..

yeah I can see many pro-iPhone reviewers blabbering about weight, couldn't careless, my Note 4 is around 176g, what's an extra 4grams.

Yeah, they will compare it to 4GB RAM phones, although the Note 5 and S6 Edge+ will count as 1GB RAM phones as they are soooo aggressive at RAM Management.

I will gladly take this over the S6 Edge+ and Note5. The 4K display, 3430mAh battery and design make it seem to be one of if not the best phones of 2015.

Going to find out from my potential future network provider when they will have this beast available.

Hear that it is not overheating and apparently it shot a 4K vid without shutting down. It sounds like Sony have done a fantastic job.

Any word on OIS in the camera??? Anyone???

Posted by wiraperkasa
No physical ois apparently

Posted by Xajel
Tsepz..

I saw a video I don't remember from Btekt or cnet.. he mentions no OIS.. just software but very accurate and fast.. he was impressed overall

No optical stabilisation while all the other manufacturers are starting to use it in their flagships...

Too bad and good luck with hand-held low light shaking blur for stills

Here's it in action

But to be honest, even with ois, shakes are not completely eliminated

This is too pretty to ignore, it looks so much nicer than the Z5 which is nearly identical in looks. Great job by Sony. I think it will be a great performer, they have changed a lot of things.

Well engadget mentions this (correct link now)

http://www.engadget.com/www.e[....]remium-compact-hands-on-video/

This fancy new sensor is backside illuminated and has embedded phase-detection pixels. It's housed in Sony's first mobile camera module with a closed-loop actuator, and in front of the sensor is a new six-element 24mm lens with a wide f/2.0 aperture. If you're unsure what all of this means, I'll break it down for you:

Sony says that, thanks to the phase-detection pixels, the Z5 family can autofocus in as little as 0.03 second, claiming it's the "world's fastest autofocus in a smartphone." All we can say is it's very quick. The actuator helps with this by swiftly moving the lens to focus, and because it's closed-loop, it'll also offer better image stabilization, especially for video

There are some image samples as well from Sony it seems.

I don't understand why everyone is obsessed with physical OIS? What does it matter? If the results speak for themselves, who really cares about HOW it is stabilized as long as it is stabilized well. If Sony's closed loop + software solution destroys everyone else's physical OIS when it comes to actual results, does it really matter? Wouldn't you say that Sony's solution is better?

complaining about lack of OIS without examining videos and comparing simply means you just want to see buzzwords.

I agree but it help.

Thanks ascariss for the precision, i hope it's also works well for stills in low light.

Nothing yet, maybe there is no haha, I posted a photo in the z5 thread of the different camera interface, well slightly different. Unless this is the interface on 5.1.1?

Posted by Tsepz_GP
Thank you ascariss, that closed loop tech sounds very interesting, as long as there is proper stabilization.

Hmmm, it really seems like Sony has actually gone all out with the Z5 Premium, I'm actually excited

Now to wait and see battery results, but with a 3430mAh I expect it to do pretty well. I am just worried about the Snapdragon 810.

As I mentioned in the rumors thread yesterday, the Z5 Premium is no doubt the most impressive Xperia smartphone released yet.

I'm quite surprised how Sony has managed to tame the beast (S810).

I feel the overheating aspect that we saw in the Z3+ might be more related to the actual sensor and not the SoC. Since the camera did turn off when shooting 4k on Z3+ and not the entire phone. Unless in videos the entire phone turned off when shooting 4k, then indeed SoC related. But I have not seen such videos personally for the camera, only for the overheating 810 supposedly.

Perhaps the extra 0.4mm to the thickness has helped in heat dissipation but I feel also the new sensor handles heat better, ie the comparison of M5 vs Z3+ in 4k video demonstrated the new M5 can go much longer and not overheat. I suspect the same IMX230 sensor tech went into the Z5 sensor (IMX300 or whatever the name will be)

The premium is most likely my next phone. Finally the first TRUE flag phablet line from sonymobile! it is about time! I suggest to the people looking for a true flag phablet not to wait for the next ultra because it will never be such it seems - rumroed with the same tablet size display - not pocket friendly, and is rumored to have inferior camera sensor (16mp, not imx300 23mp) by kuro_ne_ko from weibo.
Gsmarena photo samples look amazing to me! i am very impressed. go see if you haven't already.
They say the fingerprint reader works flawlessly, 2/3 of the finger is enough to make it work and it is touch based.
I see the chrome version being very popular because of that attracting mirror back, second is black and third and less special is actually the gold.
The only negative thing i have to say until now is only 3gb of ram for premium. it should have 4gb but i guess nothing is perfect... checking more hands on videos.

My endless rants in Sony threads seem to have been answered @Badassmam

THIS is what I wanted from Sony, I finally feel like they truly put effort into it and want to compete. I can put the Z5 Premium next to the Samsung's, LGs, HTCs, Huaweis, Asus etc... And say that this is truly a cutting edge device, Sony are truly trying to differentiate themselves here.

I had totally given up on them, I would take a peak into the Rumors thread and see the same old story replaying itself, but when I took a peak the other day and saw talk of a phone with a 4K display my eyebrows raised and eyes doubled in size.

Certainly peaked my interest.

So what we now have is the Water resistance and build quality PLUS cutting edge specs. Took Sony long enough, but I am glad they finally did it.

My next wish is that the Z5 Premium gets great marketing and destroys the pathetic Note replacement AKA S6 Edge+. Samsung are now so big they are not even catering to us "Power Users" and are trying to kill the Note line in most markets outside Asia and USA by introducing the S6 Edge+ as an "upgrade".

@Tsepz_GP what about the lack of 4GB ram or a 64GB option?

Also it goes on sale in November, so you will have to wait a while before you can get your hands on it.

Come one, I am sure you can find something a miss with the premium

Posted by Gitaroo
4GB ram is the only bummer, 64 gig internal storm is nice but when Sony allow to transfer apps to SD card I don't really care at the point. Z5P is near perfect from the look of things, still can't believe they cheap out on the ram.

Posted by evaleon
I am so stuck between getting this or Z5..so the differences are
4k vs FHD
5.5 vs 5.2 screen size
3430 mAh vs 2900 mAh

Oh and not to forget that chrome finish..Am I missing something else?Is the price difference worth it?

Posted by Xajel
For me, premium should have come with 4GB and 64GB... just to make it different...

but next iternation of the series, 4GB of ram should be standard for all flaggies... premium can be distinguished with 64GB or 128GB... and maybe some extra stuff also...

Posted by evaleon
Sorry for this question because I am partially technologically illiterate..but what difference will a 4GB RAM show compared to 3GB? Will it make a big difference? Is it to make it future proof or because all competitors are using it? Sorry if its irrelevant to this thread but i want to know.

Nobody seems to be in any rush to make a 64GB smartphone with MicroSD slot, so I have given up on that.
No 4GB RAM is a bummer, but I gues there is no perfect phone.

Now it going on sale in November is going to be a problem, IF LG mange to get the G4 Pro and Huawei get the Mate 8 out before November.

Whatever happens, this will be an interesting shopping season. It coming out in November gives me enough time to save up a bit and enough time to weigh up my options, I may or may not go for the Z5 Premium. Maybe I'll just get the iPad Air 3 and replace my iPad 4.

I am at the same place I was when I was leaving Nokia for an Android, I had the HTC Desire, Samsung Galaxy S and SE Xperia X10 to choose, and had no idea which to go with, and did a ton of research before making the jump.

Either way, Sony have a winner here.

guys what is the big fuss over the RAM? I know Sony should have gone with the 4 GB instead of 3 GB, it seriously doesn't take any effort to input it into the device. However, if you think of it from the business POV, you will know that if Sony did go along with the 4GB, it will definitely alienate its original Z5. This is no different than offering 2 Flagships. Sony remained to offer both Z5 and Z5P as flagships with ONLY 4K and battery size differences. This is allowing consumers to only choose between the sizes and not the specs. You will still get the same performance with either phone. so it all comes down to personal preferences, if you want a bigger phone go with the Z5P, if you want a decent size go with Z5. And from my POV, i just feel like Sony threw the Z5P in there to generate hype in the media, and also feels like a test device. There is no guarantee you will see a Z6P next year. So just chill guys, im sure Sony thought this one out thoroughly and i think they did the right thing.

Also, if Z6 ultra is still true, that is the one going ahead with the Samsung Note series. Seriously, offering such a large device without any features like the note is not noteworthy. Its like the Nexus 6 >.> waste of screen space.

I understand the business point of view regarding the ram but it is harder to understand 3gb. To be honest, they could give z5 and z5p 4gb of ram and compact 3gb of ram. That would be better for business for sure. It has to be said even though it is not a deal breaker and not a big deal.
Regarding phablet, as a z ultra user, please don't call ultra line a phablet, it is a mini tablet with phone capability for the overwhelming majority. The premium is the first new flag phablet line from sony and is most likely to stay as they are targeting apple, samsung, etc. phablet devices. The ultra line will never be a flag phablet and could never rival s plus, note, etc. because the next one will have the same characteristics of the first, a 6.44" display, inferior camera sensor (16mp, not imx300) mentioned by kuro_ne_ko (weibo).

Z5 compact photo that demonstrate 0.03 sec - Hybrid AF shot by a tester i know from my country, although uploaded to facebook quality (Relevant to here because the premium has the same sensor):

probably the same people that says 1080p and 720p on 5" are virtually the same.

Posted by moogoo
on a screen that small it is definitely not gonna be easy to tell the difference. most people probably wouldn't be able to tell and only people with a keen eye would. it's the same for a lot of things like photos and audio quality.

that being said, this guy wrote a bashing article before really getting a true hands on of the Z5p and the Z5. other tech blogs like engadget actually got z5p devices in hand to preview them and rave about the 4k. and this guy is calling it hype based on his few minutes at a booth and some phones stuck to a wall display? seasoned reporter? more like desperate for attention..

Posted by aussieland1
I also suspect the 4k resolution will be hard to notice by most people (still can't wIt to try the phone myself though.

Like others said this looks like a true flagship so well done Sony. Looking forward to reading real life experience about battery and camera. Still well done to Sony for inserting a larger battery and producing this nice phone. It us a shame though it won't be available until November . iPhones , nexus , da sung already will be available before then so I feel like Sony is missing on potential clients here.
