Sony Announces The 'Super Mid-Range' Xperia M5 With 21.5MP Hybrid Autofocus Camera

Really will be interesting to see how well this new sensor performs, especially in low light with a less than stellar f2.2 lens. I doubt the camera has full manual controls with ability to control exposure time, since no mention in the video.

Still hopefully Sony improved both the manual mode and the superior auto.

Been checking sony sites and it seems it is not on all of them.

Only found it so far at Sony Russia, Turkey, Ukraine, Chile, Columbia, Malaysia, Singapore, taiwan, Vietnam, egypt, Iraq, Iran, Nigeria, South africa, UAE.

So I am wondering if this will even come to europe at all.

Posted by doministry
Very strange. Not available globally?

Posted by josephnero
I think their developer blog said it's only for emerging markets

Posted by ascariss
Sony should reconsider and sell these in Europe, I feel the M5 will be a nice bargain considering its specs.

Posted by josephnero
Yeah.i'm waiting for M5 to get priced.

Maybe but it hasn't appeared on any of the major western european websites. Either Sony is waiting for IFA to introduce it to europe or it won't be sold here at all. I listed the websites which have the M5 above, so far it is only available in those countries.

It would be foolish not to sell it in the major europeean countries but perhaps sony feels the markets are mature enough that customers prefer the high end smartphones like Z3. But then M5 is not that far if you ask me and might even be better in terms of the camera performance.

There are camera samples, and probably using pre-final software? Hmm shame the file sizes are rather small, 5 megs for a 21.5MP camera. hmm

The camera is giving better details than xperia z3
i am not sure abt dynamic range but there some chroma noise

still not very impressive at all, compression algorithm definitely has less less dithering now than before, and no over sharpening. Still need auto level + curve balancing automatically adjusted. Thats how Apple, Samsung and everyone else gets strong colorful images.

And often very unrealistic too.

So according to sony xperia poland, at this point in time neither the M5 or C5U will be sold in poland for the time being, this might change in the future but nothing concrete.

True, but most people prefer magazine print like photos than matching the Natural color, got to go with what the market wants.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pDkaUP5ABz4 Amazing zoom quality if it's true

Posted by blackzeros
it's fake , you can hear optic zoom's sound
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O6ihs_B8Lts

Posted by kurtdean
I mute the sound

Posted by ascariss
The camera can do 1080p and 4k, yet it is uploaded in 720p? This is not due to the zoom is it? I thought you could zoom in even in 1080 and still not lose quality.

Was the table supposed to be white? Everything looks "warm" (brownish)... Maybe the white balance should be adjusted?

cheers!

This is what sony should have done long ago, even with the magnetic port, have only one dock and then include an adapter with each phone.

Of course technically any dock with micro usb should work with the sony now I presume. Personally don't see myself buying one in the future, only reason I bought the magnetic dock was so I could charge my phone without undoing the flaps.

Xperia Z5 (ISO 160):

Xperia M5 (ISO 759):

Xperia Z5 (ISO 400):

P.S: For me, the Xperia M5 won by a slight advantage, presenting an image with less noise even when using a higher ISO sensitivity !!!

none of those links works for me.

Copy the address and paste into the address bar. Altough there are just two pictures (M5, 341 ISO, Z5 160 ISO), the other two have the same links.

M5 won slightly because Z5 has one problem - digital noise. It's very strong, phonearena's sample pictures confirmed it as well.

I hope that at the final software Sony improves photographic post processing camera Z5 and leave at least with the same quality as the M5, it would be a big mistake Sony continue to make the same mistake they made with the Z1, Z2, Z3 now also with the Z5 line !!!

Posted by ascariss
The overall quality is already better than the previous z line devices, might be the extra 6th lens in the setup. The images are still using pre-production software and possibly even hardware. No doubt Sony will release better algorithm once the devices are out, and hopefully even more improvement once the new camera UI comes out in november.
