Apparently Sony are to produce a WP8 handset under the Vaio brand by mid 2014 :

Looking forward to see if this materialises. It would be good news for WP

Personally I can't see this happening due to the whole PS4 vs Xbox One. Would Sony really want Xbox content on one of their own devices I don't think so. 2014 Sony are likely to push on even stronger with Android and incorporate more PS4 exclusives in Xperia devices.

nothing stops them from doing BOTH.

Remember Sony still makes a LOT of Laptops, and hybrid tablets like the Sony Flip 13/14/15 running Windows. Thus Microsoft is already a platinum strategic partner for Sony, and with Microsoft going BIG this year with Windows plans for smartphones and tablets this may be inline of Sony's efforts.

I just think that Sony will at least for this coming year focus on Android. There is now doubt Windows mobile is gathering pace I just can't see them using a rival platform when it comes to mobile gaming I know this is a small part of what make a smartphone but it is something both Sony and Microsoft will be focusing on with their respected smartphones and do you think Microsoft will allow Sony to port any Playstation mobile games onto their platform as that is probably what Sony will want as a stand out feature against Nokia who as we all know are now owned by Microsoft who will not want to dent Nokia's sales.

We''ll see soon enough. There are a lot of other reports about the same subject all over the tech sites. I just hope they improve their camera performance if they do produce a WP handset.

Happy New year all

Exactly.

Any Sony machine running Windows 8.1/RT can run Xbox smart glass...

Looks like its going to happen !!

Best of luck to them, they'll need it!
I can already see some Esatonians who once wrote off WP suddenly change their tune just because Sony makes/may make WPs

I wonder if Sony will make any sort of major impact though in WP, IMO, no, but this will be interesting to watch.

Not really. Just because Sony makes a WP8 device doesn't mean people who don't like it would start liking it

I never liked WP8 and never will and personally I wish Sony didn't bother with WP8.

I really liked WP7.5
I hoped the disadvantages would vanish with WP8 but it didn't.
For daily use it's a nice OS and once when they give me access to do with the files whatever I want. I will try it again.

Pretty much the reason why I myself avoided WP, same reason with IOS.

I share the same opinion with random in that Sony shouldn't have bothered with it.

I'd rather see Sony go ubuntu or another OS. I do understand that Sony is looking for an alternative in case people get tired and bored of Android. But as long as I still see WP with restrictions that I don't like, I wouldn't bother considering in getting a WP smartphone.

This is a seriously stupid move. Let windows phone die.

To which files are you referring to and what extent... I have a wp8 devices and file access has not yet been one of my complaints.... admittedly however, its not really my primary device so Im more just curious.

What a ridiculous statement !!

More choice has to be better for the consumer, we are already down to only 3 major OS with the demise of BB. I seriously do not like any BB and would never use one but would welcome a resurgence in their fortunes to keep competition alive.

Still if you want to live in a Google dominated world where your privacy is worthless then that's your lookout !!

Well, Windows Phone is pretty much alive with Microsoft not unlike BB, unless some big company plants a CEO on their's and trick them to using a new OS that would differentiate them with other OEMs without thinking about how it would help them financially and then eventually just buy BB out of misery.

Like Microsoft does not do it.

So basically, if Sony chooses to refrain from helping a perform and ecosystem grow which is potentially a serious competitor to it on a gaming front, possibly a competitor to any other OS Sony might create or try in the future, and the platform which can only allow Microsoft to win now that Nokia is owned by them, it's ridiculous?

Microsoft are a dirty company. Remember the OEMs submitting their windows RT device designs beforehand, which Microsoft used to create their own?

I agree competition is good for the consumer. But that doesn't make sense here. You want Sony to support the competition to complete against itself... Right...

Also remember how Microsoft treated the 7.5 devices upgrade to 8.0? Exactly. 7.8, what's that?

When there are far more viable options, such as Firefox and especially Ubuntu, this IS a seriously stupid move.

Let them die? Let the biggest mobile patent troll die? Yes please.

The ridiculous statement was your comment about me and Google. How did you dream up that idea?

Firstly, Microsoft does the same thing. Secondly, there's more to life than Google, I.e. Ubuntu etc.

Firefox,Ubuntu as OS's? you wish these were relevant but im afraid they're not, nor will be for a long long time on a mobile device

Sony already make Windows based laptops etc so what difference a mobile phone ? Unless you develop your own OS that people actually want to use you unfortunately have to consider other options. That's the position Sony are in. In the EU5 countries WP has a market share of over 10%, that's a lot of users to be ignoring. I appreciate that its struggling in Japan, China and the USA to a certain extent but its still the third biggest OS by users worldwide.
Ive never seen any adverts on my Outlook email that correspond to subjects of my emails, unlike my gmail account (scanning my emails without my permission ) !!

Surely the biggest mobile patent trolls are either Samsung or Apple ?

I really doubt a company as big as Sony are seriously going to consider a Ubuntu or Firefox handset just yet

I was right on my original post, you statements are ridiculous

As far as I know, Sony does have the plan to launch Windows phone this year. But no more detail, sorry.

I personally look forward to a WP. I have learned from different sources that WP is as smooth as IOS and smoothness is almost the most important feature for a light user like me. I dont install app frequently. I dont change my home page frequently. I just use the basic functions including making phone call, text, browsing, carema and social. All the functions would be accomplished perfectly on a WP with great smoothness.

So I believe this is a good idea for Sony to better cater to the light users.

Actually, WP is smoother than IOS even with a lower spec'd devices. This is what amazed me since long time ago. How did they do it?

even windows 8 on the pc is so smooth compared to other platform (based on my sony vaio duo and vaio tap experience). I don't think solid state hard disk make that much different.

personally I want Sony to try WP. The only thing that I don't like about WP is you can't differentiate from other brands. Microsoft should add customization to the home screen.

Yes WP's are amazingly smooth especially for mid-to-light users.Except me in my family all use WPs and even after a year of use all are running smooth.I support SONY for WP phones.WP phones have a market, its growing so why not latch on it at this stage? Android is dominated by SAMSUNG and players like SONY & HTC need something to break free, some where they can built a rep.

@Myp910

Yes, WP has its own weakness including lack of customerization and incomplete eco-system. This is what MS should work hard to catch up.

Anyway, I'll take the chance as long as Sony releases WP.

Guys ... seriously. Read the internet, blogs and many threads here about BlackBerry as a business before continuing this crap.

1. No longer for sale. Debt is secured via $3.5 Million the last $250'000 secured by January 14th; oh wait that was today.
2. New CEO who is heavily focused and experienced with a GLOBAL track-record - EVEN IF I BELIEVE the same beginning is a honeymoon and started just like Heins did. He's an outside iCEO made CEO.
3. Two new executive staff members with proven global track records from SAP Inc! Yeah you know SAP & if you don't you SHOULD, Sony is a major client of theirs.
4. There IP in QNX is still highly valuable even if their fraking clueless how to fully use it beyond BB10/NOC servers - well that latte upgrade needs to be seriously updated.
5. No DEBT! Hasn't EVER BEEN! Funny all the other MAJOR players that have billions in cash STILL have major debt ... WHY!?! IF they don't need it! Maybe has to do with so many outstanding stocks in case when times get rough for too long like BB they'll be threatened with a take over.

Basically SAP is a platinum partner of BlackBerry for over a decade now ... and now they're going to make major changes inside out. Everybody keeps saying BB is dead. Well in the consumer space yes that has been proven but they're not going out of business anytime soon not in 2014 ... and yet still for the past 3yrs all-yall keep saying that EVERY year! Maybe the misery is those that keep claiming hate being wrong every year it's causing them misery just hearing news that their still around lol. Remember blackberry's strength is with large corporations ... they've built their business for over 20yrs doing JUST corporate business and survived quite well and considering the continued growth of BES10 servers despite the market being flooded with MDM server/cloud or both solutions in combination their still growing clients ... just look to Germany huge growth so ... their dead how in the generic sense?

I also don't like 3 major OS ... and 3 major manufacturers. Sorry I don't separate Samsung from Google in terms of hardware without Samsung there IS no Android OS. Think about ... if Samsung decide that Note 3/SGS4 was the LAST products to ship with Android OS or with support until 12mths from purchase date ... Google will have a SERIOUS marketshare issue on their hands ... and NOT from just sales of devices, developers making apps, hardware company's making accessories, but ALSO from mobile search and ad revenue!! (THAT is Googles primary business).
