Sony has posted a $312 million loss for Q1 (pdf) on sales of $19.2 billion for the months of April to June. Its operating profit fell 77 percent to just $80 million, dramatically worse than a forecast 36 percent drop in profits from the same time last year. One-off restructuring costs, including the transition of Sony Ericsson to Sony Mobile, as well as continued losses from its TV division and weaker that expected demand for its PlayStation lineup ensure Sony suffered yet another loss.

How the mighty have fallen...

Oh Sony, how i wish this was suprising, but it isn't, the current portfolio is average, and they are just not being that competitive enough in marketing or in the high end of the market, its a damn shame.

and to think that they started the mobile smart phone revolution with the P800, the P900, P910i, and P1. They need to start hiring better people.

19 billion in sales? yet a loss of 312 million? That is astounding, really. I understand that we can't expect Kaz to turn this company around within three months, hell even Jobs took 1 year to get Apple back into profitability, but those numbers don't sound right. On another note, Sony did buy a part of EMI for 2.2 billion USD, Gaikai for 380 million USD, and just a few months after they bought out Ericsson's stake for 1.5 billion USD. The future seems brighter and I'm confident Sony will do better. Excelsior!

damn it Sony come on, bring out the Xperia tablet and blow the competition away I know you are capable just need a little push a bit to market your products!!!

Well these results are quite positive, as NoTnERb mentioned Sony have spent quite a lot on acquisitions recently and also they have increased their R&D expenditure as well to 6 billion dollars. Also keep in mind Q1 loss was 3.1 billion dollars. So from 3.1 billion dollars loss to 312 million loss in 3 months is nothing but impressive.

I still feel that there is a lot that 'Sony' needs to be doing. The losses might be decreasing but that doesn't mean that they are doing well. The fact is that 'Nokia' that was the leader in the market is facing a lot of setbacks. Because of some disastrous decisions of supporting 'Windows OS' instead of 'Android'. Leaving Symbian behind even when the sales were good enough to justify the R & D costs in this OS. They even dropped 'Meego' that had a lot of potential.

Now, Nokia has been forced to cut there workforce as there handsets are not selling like hot cakes. They already have lost a huge portion of the market to the likes of 'Samsung', 'Apple', & 'Sony Ericsson'. That's the main reason why Sony was able to sell so many handsets.

But, the irony is that in the entire history of 'Sony' they are the least competitive at this moment. That can easily be concluded by looking at there current portfolio of mobile phones. Which have the same features & hardware. But they have ridiculous price differentiation. All looks the same. And they are adapting screen touch mobile phones without a physical keyboard just like 'Apple'. They only have 2 android mobiles that have 'qwerty' keypad(Mini Pro, Xperia Pro). And these have already become obsolete as they have a single core 1 GHz processor with 512MB Ram with is not enough for any future upgrades. They simply don't have any Qwerty mobile in the current portfolio which is serious matter as not everybody is looking for apple like mobile phones.

So, they need to innovate and try to be more competitive just like the days when it produced it's feature phones.

With Sony having bought Ericsson's stake i thought we'd finally see some Sony innovation come through with powerful chipsets, maybe a Cyber-shot Android flagship smartphone with Xenon flash, instead we got the Xperia S with old hardware dressed in a pretty design and an average 12MP Camera even compared to the N8.

They need to make atleast one major device per year, the same way Samsung ,HTC and Apple do. Make one really high end phone that is the halo device, then the rest can be mid end with the older chipsets, it would really help push the brand. They cant carry on being happy due to the current loss being less than the previous one and cutting forecasts, the point of being in business is to make a profit, and at this rate it doesnt look like it will be happening at any time soon.

Err... News Flash ! Xperia S is a Sony Ericsson device! It's not as if Sony can come up with a phone in 6 weeks. There is no phone this year made under Sony, so wait till second half 2013 before saying "With Sony having bought Ericsson's stake i thought we'd finally see some Sony innovation come through"

2nd half of 2013!!? please tell me you're kidding? By then we'll have a SGS4 plus the next HTC flagship and the GS3 and One X will be mid range handsets.

Be it a Sony or SE model, they really could've done more with the XS to make all this an easier transition , the excuse that its a SE product aint gona cut it, this industry moves too fast for that sort of thing.

Can you read or you just complain?

Samsung and HTC has his own mobile department for years.
Sony don't have at that time, they have just take over the company that call SonyEricsson.

And i don't know if you know, the Xperia S is faster than SGS3, you so called the industry is too fast.
Quad Core CPU means nothing and that's is the only difference.

Even Intel said that Android is very useless for CPU with more than one cores.

You are so freaking naive.

Sony did have a mobile division before they did the joint venture with Ericsson, and had a 50% stake in it, so i dont see what you trying to get at.

And i don't know if you know, the Xperia S is faster than SGS3

^ THIS officially the biggest load of rubbish, but if that helps you sleep at night keep lying to yourself.

Even Intel said that Android is very useless for CPU with more than one cores.

Who here said that all this was just about CPUs and how many cores??? Sony could've thrown in a Xenon flash and made this the best Android camera phone and brought Cyber-shot to smartphones, if you read into what i said properly you'd see im not just talking CPUs...and you call me naive?

EDIT: Imagine they made both Cyber-shot and Walkman flagships. The Cyber-shot having a Satio type design, and the Walkman being a sort of continuation from where the W960 left ,with music keys and a sort focus to audiophiles but remaining mass market friendly, they could have done a lot with mostly the same hardware, but hey what do i know, im naive maybe such things would be a tad bit ambitious.
