Hahahahahahaha so the truth is finally out that Apple tried to copy Sony when designing its first phone. Also its also pretty evident they copied Sony Vaio design elements for their Macbook Pro and Macbook air. And also blatantly copied the chicklet keyboard design as if they came up with it first.

Such a shame !!! Apple and Samsung are the biggest copycats in the history of consumer electronics.

I would suspect that all OEMs examine their competitors' offerings and Sony had brought out some wicked designs in the past.

Hahaha Maybe Apple should do this to make it up to Sony

So, Apple "slavishly" copied Sony's designs?

One could say they also copied LG's Prada design.

Posted by Sugarkane
Sony is the mother of all "magic" so?

This explain why Apple don't aim Sony in that patent war!

Posted by goldenface
I don't think Sony could ever be accused of copying the iPhone or iPad in any of it's gadgets, no single home button, no metal strip etc.

Here is a link to the Trial Brief, quite interesting, although I'm not sure Samsung's argument is at all watertight.

apple may got inspired by sony's style, but the truth is that sony could have never pulled off the design of the iphone 4
calling it a copy, is just plain ignorant

Its a warning to Apple to shut up and stop whining about Samsung etc. or Sony will have to kick them in the arse. If one day all phones are banned except for the iPhone, I'll get myself a carrier pigeon rather than get bullied into buying that junk. Competition forces companies to innovate and improve, Apple haven't done much to the iPhone in a while so they plan to remove the competition. I'm sick of their crap.

Posted by randomuser
I'd like to share some interesting info that some of you may not be knowing.

About 10 years back, Apple was so impressed with the Sony Vaio notebook range that it wanted to partner with Sony so they could have VAIO notebooks running on Mac OSX. Sony refused the deal and hence the Macbook range was born. If Sony had agreed to the deal, there would be no MBP or MB Air today.

Also 2-3 years prior to that, when Apple wasn't that big Sony was considering buying Apple. But ultimately some of the top board members and executives decided it wasn't going to be a worthy investment so unfortunately nothing really materialized. I think this is the single BIGGEST mistake Sony has done in its history. Had Sony bought Apple in 2000, its fortunes would have been very different today.

Posted by razec
^^ Then Sony will end up like this:

1. Most hated company among its competitors (samsung, nokia, LG, htc, microsoft etc)
2. There will be no Xperia device with Android OS (only iOS)
3. Sony might have hard time innovating on the hardware side (steve jobs is so much passionate about looks looks and looks only, he'll end up producing VAIOs that generates more heat than some of the already hot Vaios)
4. NEX cameras will look like iphone with sticking lens (which is lame imho) probably will lack APS-C sensors due to Steve Job's fondness of a tinier, slimmer body
5. Alpha cameras will look like iTV with large protuding lens
6. Bravias will be colored white and will have more plain design.

While it's true that Apple is really a successful company and will greatly benefit Sony, I find it hard to agree about Apple bringing the best out of Sony hardware though.

Posted by randomuser
LOL razec I guess you misread or something. Sony was going to buy Apple and not the other way around. Sony would have been Apple's boss so Apple wouldn't have had any influence on Sony but Sony would have had the most influence on Apple as Sony would have been running it and not Steve Jobs.

Anyway, now that Apple's downfall has started (latest earnings miss) I hope in future Sony regains its deserved top spot in consumer electronics and buys Apple. LOL

I sit in wonderment at Sony's top end lappies. They're not just something pretty to look at, they always pack an almighty punch.

Apple needs to do the this since it loves slapping on SONY logo on its "inspired creations" so much.

And "inspired" or copied doesn't really matter. The fact is what Apple have done is wrong. It is not right/ethical to try to emulate another brand's design philosophy and use a trademark copyrighted logo in an internal design mock up with no permission whatsoever.

I hope Apple don't sue me for the above though. LOL

design processes are pretty fragile. you are always trying to dissect the competition, thats done at all companies world wide. internal presentations are never meant for public, simply because they are raw(no marketing bla) and very human.
these days its pretty common that your client wants his product to look like the one of "company x". of course its up to the designer how he deals with this request. words alone don't always help here, putting logos on prototype models can often prove some points. so take a rest
you are only proving that apple is really hurting themself here, because the general public won't understand a design process

Well its pretty clear Apple wouldn't survive without Sony. As most of Apple is just a Sony rip off !!!. No wonder they continue to do this even today. Copying the Sony dualshock controller being the latest example.

Why else would Apple top guy sneak in Sony's booth at CES ?

What a shame !

Copying the Sony dualshock controller being the latest example.

its a patent drawing, using schematic symbols (the final product may not even use a controller at all)
the drawings are only explaining

I don't like Apple, I never had a problem with them until they went on their reckless litigation spree, but to say they wouldn't be around if it wasn't for Sony is stretching it quite a bit.

Like it was pointed out, they (Apple) idolised Sony and took inspiration from them.

I remember when phones looked a lot like each other, ie, a screen with numerical plus alphabetical keypad. The only difference was the name of the manufacturer.

Why didn't we then cry foul?

Heck, LCD televisions look like they were manufactured by one manufacturer.

If only Apple could stop suing everybody else for silly patents.

Samsung try to get Sony in the picture because they are frustrated and have no single clue how to defend this shit.
First said Samsung (we have build this in protype device) and now they said Apple use Sony design, what te hell Samsung?

I hope Apple take you down crappy crapsung the biggest copycat in the world.

You know that Samsung have all technology have copied from other from Ericsson (3G) Ram modules from (Rambus) and LCD Oled from Sony/Phillips/Sharp and Panasonic copied from them? What about the CPU architecture? where get they from hmmm ?

What about the government support that Samsung get the last 10 year?
I tell you folks, there is something very wrong about Samsung suddenly they have many patents who was stolen.
Somebody have to watch Samsung very closely.

Samsung was never a innovation tech company, they only use tech from other and try it get better with no success.

I always loved Sony design
I guess I was not the only one
every one at Apple did too lol

I'm not defending Samsung here but words like Samsung is the biggest copycat in the world sounds too sensational to me, prior to Apple's entrance on the mobile phone market the Korean giant were very bold and innovative. I know most of the "young" new members here didn't have the chance to experience phones that are the "trendy" 5-6 years ago but to refresh everyone's memory here

just take a look at these things:

God, I missed those days, while it's true that those designs are rather unconventional, at least we see Samsung as a company that "thinks", In this post-iPhone-1st-gen time, mobile companies lacked the creativity they used to, and yes even Sony lacked the aggressiveness they used to as well. All smartphones of today are nothing but a thin slab of plastic/metal with screen at the front and camera at the back. I'm an advocate of design innovation but these days I can't see it thanks to Apple.

Doesn't really suprise me that they got inspiration from some of Sony designs.
Sony has got some of best designs around, not only from their mobiles but practicaly everything they do.

thx for posting these designs, thats a very true statement
5 years after the introduction of the original iphone, there still seems to be some kind of unconsciousness lingering inside the old players
the diversity is gone, there is hardly a room for risky adventures
i guess we need to wait for flexible displays or googles glass, to get something which has a "new character"

@razec

You are 100% right with your post, all smartphones since the iphone 1 was introduced have became boring looking. I really do think a smartphone looks boring. I remember the days when they did concept images of future phones wow they looked amazing and punched way above weight in terms of designs of smartphones now. Mobile phones have became drab and boring. One style and thats it! They need to bring back some innovation to the game! My suggestion would be dual touchscreen but with a difference. Normal touch screen and then like a hologram like display at another angle in which you can interact with. Or go the extreme have a hologram display as your screen! Say from a like a watch type of device. That would be awesome! Sony did the floating touch technology on the Xperia sola now thats very interesting even though its restricted for now, but imagine just pushing the boundaries a little and wow innovation has been created!

Apple in my eyes used Sonys design for inspiration, maybe copy but it is strange that Sony did not patent these designs prior to Apple looking at them.

As for people saying about Sony on iOS lol no way it will never happen. Sony in my eyes are Apples biggest threat, forget Samsung for now but who is the longest serving tech company in the work? Sony. Why would you want to touch a company with so much history and innovation? It would be suicide for Apple. I think the media are trying to dig up dirt about Apple with this design element. I suppose the tech landscape has got boring and they need some interesting stories to living things up a bit lol

Posted by razec
I also forgot to mention Google is also guilty of the death of design innovation on Smartphones. their ICS/JB killed the need for hardware buttons, hardware keyboards also became nonexistent even though the first commercial android smartphone had one! even the early prototype as well! we have to be grateful Sony still cares for people who want faster access with the camera even though the shutter key is uncomfortably tiny. and now even Microsoft is forcing their long term PC users to adopt with the ridiculously oversize icons and touch-oriented UIs on their desktops/laptops. Stupid American tech trends these days, really...

The main inspiration for the iPhone was the SonyEricsson P800, which Steve Jobs owned at the time.

What are you on about?

I know exactly what Samsung is capable of, I know all about Ericsson technology, I know about Nokia and Motorola's as well.

I am well aware of Sharp/Panasonic/Sony/Pioneer television technology.

The point is my post was/is about the design language of different manufacturers, that Apple did what a lot of other manufacturers do when they design a product: everybody looks at everybody and thinks how to best improve or innovate on the other manufacturer's design.

At no point did I defend Samsung except to accuse Apple of being overly aggressive on patents- some of which are absurd IMO.

well....one thing is for sure.........Apple did (if its even true) a hell better job regarding build quality.

Sonys cellphones/smart-phones feels like pure crap compared to iphone ultra rock-solid casing & screen.

by the way.....Steve Job invented great design light-years before Sony.

Apple (Steve Job) has always have incredible skills about design....thats for sure.

thats untrue
when was apple found? and when was sony found? think about it

steve jobs was no designer, but he had a good feeling for it
its widely known that he was a fan of minimal design and japanese culture
minimal design was greatly coined by dieter rams ... google it

..........what are you 12 or something ??

Steve Jobs not a designer ? (have you read the book ??? i guess not, do that and then come back)

he had a finger in both technical design such as basic design.

and by the way...............are you completely mad...he invented one of the first (personal computers) back in 1970, (the name was Apple 2 by the way)............he was without a doubt one of the most skills tech gurus ever lived.

enough said !

It was steve wozniak who invented the first computer, not Jobs, though It's no wonder many people including you would think it was th other way around since Jobs was charismatic and Woz was very low profile and that holds true whenever Apple introduces something on the market Jobs heavily advertises it as "their" invention even though the technology it's using had existed long ago. have you watched the pirates of the silicon valley?

In the latest developments, Samsung have internal documents which show concepts which are rectangular in shape with rounded corners as early as 2006.

Although, later on, internal emails from google appear to warn Samsung about the GlxS similarity to the iPhone.

Posted by tranced
Hey guys. Chill. No need to do this.

Here's something else about this matter: Apple 2005 'purple' prototype shows it did not copy Sony

Posted by razec
Keep up the good work Samsung and Apple while you guys continue hurling stones at each other by revealing supposedly top-secret documents like this, the rest of the world especially the loyalists and the fanboys enjoy looking at such trivial facts on their screens on the other hand it seems Apple cannot get themselves away from the bar touchscreen design concept for half a decade now that we may not be able to see any innovatively designed apple device in the near future until someone on their office throws some bold idea - how I wish it comes now - help Samsung and other copycats move on

btw, why is Apple not suing Meizu?
