• Sony Ericsson builds on its environmental heritage with new commitment to the GreenHeart™ strategy through its accessories portfolio

London, December 14, 2009: Today Sony Ericsson announces the Sony Ericsson Elm phone, the Sony Ericsson Hazel phone and the Bluetooth™ Noise Shield Handsfree VH700, the newest additions to the company’s GreenHeart™ portfolio. The two mobile phones and one accessory provide consumers with an expanded range of products to make an educated green choice without compromising on design and functionality.

“The Sony Ericsson Elm and the Sony Ericsson Hazel phones offer consumers a green choice without compromising on features or fun. These mobile phones also give consumers a better voice quality experience, with Noise Shield, Clear Voice and Intelligent Volume Adaptation. Both phones offer an easy-to-use social networking experience featuring the Widget Manager application, which allows users access to their social networking page via the stand-by screen and quickly switch between different social networks.” said Fortuné Alexander, Global Marketing Director at Sony Ericsson.

Sony Ericsson has also announced today its ambition to making all of its accessories 100 per cent GreenHeart™ compliant by 2011.

“Building on the established heritage of our parent companies we have worked continuously to maintain our leadership position by committing to reduce our own CO2 emissions by 20 per cent and product life cycle CO2 emissions by 15 per cent by 2015.” said Mats Pellbäck Scharp, Environmental Director at Sony Ericsson.

“The Sony Ericsson Elm phone, Sony Ericsson Hazel phone and the VH700 are a testament of our continued commitment to the environment and are part of the ongoing roll-out of our GreenHeart™ strategy announced in June 2009.” continues Mats Pellbäck Scharp.

Steve Alder, General Manager Group and UK Devices for O2, said: “Offering Sony Ericsson GreenHeart™ phones to our customers has been a part of our strategy to integrate sustainability across all our products and services thereby helping our customers reduce their environmental footprint. As an industry it is essential we embrace innovation in this area and incorporating greener credentials across our product portfolio is certainly a focus for us moving forwards.”

The Sony Ericsson Elm phone, the Sony Ericsson Hazel phone and the VH700 all benefit the environment and help reduce CO2 emissions through:

They are gonna waste more energy fussing over these products than if they just produced a standard phone

PS: The Elm looks like the C901.

Posted by steveatkoss
Why Q2 for Hazel? should have been Q1 atleast! hope the pricing will be right

And why is that?

Recommended retail prices in Germany, market price will be 10-20% less:
Elm: 239€
Hazel: 279€

Posted by thesun
omg,
very hard to remember the names,
cant they give name in alphabetical order?

Posted by brys182
Elm looks nice

another greenheart project

Posted by steveatkoss
@xell thanks the prices seem ok to me...btw why the difference in colors between Elm(262K) n Hazel(16M)? not complaining jus curious

Posted by Rookwise
With those specs i'd guess the phones would be around £250 max for sim free and around £150-£200 for a pay and go one for the UK.

Don't like the headset dispite the features. Hopefully they will put those features into a nicer headset.

I'm also glad that SE are starting to move more away from the fastport plug and onto USB plugs.

Posted by roanmy
The candybar one is just fugly O_o.

Posted by goldenface
The new headset features Bluetooth V2.1 according to the specifications. Can we assume both phones also have V2.1?

Posted by Bonovox
They look nice and at least with decent specs this time. Although this aint going to save the planet waste of time imo still nice phones though

Posted by McKinley
I wonder if Sony Ericsson used Keeley Hazell as a reference for the curvy shape of Hazel

Posted by Bonovox
And the Christmas Elm

Posted by julias
Its nice idea but does anyone really want or will even bother to buy environmentally friendly green phones?

Posted by Rookwise
If it didn't compromise on features then yes I would and already have done so with SE's other Greenheart offerings.

This message was posted from a C901

Posted by goldenface
I'd consider these phones. The features aren't so bad. Integrated Twitter, FB AND Myspace are something we haven't seen on other SE phones.

It's a lifestyle choice. Some people care about the environment and the damaging chemicals we deposit when we throw our phones away, and others couldn't give a hoot. It's nice to have the choice, though.

I care and quite agree it's a lifestyle choice. These are ideal for non-techies caring for the environment.
But don't seem to keep up with their own schedule, again. The C901 GreenHeart and Naite are sttill (!!!) nowhwere to be found in their official webshop.

It is reasonable to suppose that Elm and Hazel will become available in the UK sometime in 2012

Cheers!

EDIT: Naite has just cropped up there today, SIM free at £129.99 Waiting for the eco-friendly C901...

I am not going to go into the old climate change discussion. But I will say this.WHAT IS THE POINT? Whatever do China, India & America will only create billions more c02 so what the hellare these phones seriously going to achieve? Nice phones all the same though

Posted by goldenface
It's also about hazardous chemicals being left in the environment - dangerous pollutants. When you consider how many phones are sold and disposed of each and every year (900 million) that's a lot of hazardous waste to have lying around for ever.

At least now the people who care have a choice.

Posted by juris15
so, no A200 + Android?

Posted by Bonovox
No I do care about the environment but these days everyone is either recycling their old phones for cash or selling them on. The world is naturally changing anyway it always does. But I like the red one looks cool

Posted by fbloise
The Elm with Android will be a serious killer!

Posted by steveatkoss
imo i really dont think there are a large number of people who would consider these 2 phones simply coz they use 50% (i think) recycled materials...but like goldenface said people who care have a choice and for people who dont it has to be priced cheap...FB,twitter,myspace etc coming in the phone itself is a plus...Naite is priced well here in India about 95 Euros i bought one for couple of days back...Elm should be about 50 euros more coz there isnt much to diff i think

Touchscreen???

Posted by se_dude
LOL.Another SE screw up.

Posted by tranced

Would have loved this fake feature.

Posted by Bonovox
The Elm looks like a c901 & Hazel well she looks like a t715 & I see no touchscreen
[ This Message was edited by: Bonovox on 2009-12-14 16:21 ]

Given that this is not the first time that (most likely (sic!)) fake features appear on the site, their marketing department should consider changing the punctuation in their tag line from
make.believe
to
make-believe

wheres the touchscreen?

There isn't one, that's sony ericsson being stupid again

maybe the IT guy have wrong details

Posted by se_love
I dunno bout you guys but this is an excellent example of SE doing what they do best. Its water resistant as well, and for a slider with a 16M color screen I wouldn't put it down too fast. The ecological bull I can care less about, and the looks aren't too fancy but are there. I'm definitely going to dip in this if nothing else seems interesting by next year.

Posted by Bonovox
Be funny if these models are Made in China the worlds biggest bloody emmiters of cO2

Posted by mediar
I think the GreenHeart phones should be part of their normal product line, not only a few extra phones without any special feature on them but nature-friendly. Why don't they make high-end phones like W995 to be GreenHeart, or X10, or Satio? Elm and Hazel don't have anything special inside ( for most people the difference between 16M and 262k is worthless, nor the water-resistant will atract them ). In addition the phones are quite ugly, I'd prefer T715's design. I mean these phones are just "another phones by SE".

SE Elm ... not a bad phone really, should you look at the ram it ships with it should be better than C510/C901. Like others would have loved Symbian or Android on this ... but I think SE is reserving Android for something specific.

Someone mentioned they don't care about the environment? You will when your grandkids are having issues with asthma or other illness related to it. That kind of thinking is the arrogance that left us with Acid Rain, Typhoons that continuously hit Indonesia (leaving hundreds of thousands dead/homeless), and hurricanes that regularly his the USA eastern costal border. It'll get worse before it gets better. Remember, "Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned" and you DON'T want to get Mother Earth scorned because she can be "One serious bitch" if she don't get what she wants. Basically we all live in this world and depend on the ecosystem that provides food, water, and air to breath.

I say smart move for SE. Going GreenHeart not only will help it save manufacturing costs, but I'm sure there are significant taxation credits that they can take advantage of in various western country's to help its financial health. Bravo SE.

I'd hope the Elm is a more powerful cpu than C510 (124mhz). This will help it sell and to be honest the longevity of ownership well you don't have to be so careful. I'm PISSED that SE pulled this Euro only HSPA bands yet again though.

Mmmm skeptical the world has always had hurricanes floods & such things from beginning of time. The problem now is increased population being affected. And I never said I don't care about the environment I just said these phones will make no impact or little difference

Just reread what you posted. I'm wrong sorry about that (should've wrong my glasses). Skeptical & debatable but I live in North America and there has never been on record anywhere close to 6-9 hurricanes that developed on the cost of Miami since 2000. Over population ... well acts of nature is Earths way to curb us, sucks but its a reality (anyone that has lost someone to acts of nature my deepest apologies).

These phones along will make little impact, but if SE does this across the lineup; recycling materials and no hazardous chemicals in production process & final products will be significant in around 2yrs+ after implementation.

That said I think I'll still get this for my son, for now he's getting a C510 for Xmas.

Posted by TeknoBoi90
i have just one question, why so many people were saying these phones would be android (or even touch screen, i heard it somewhere)... It was quite clear that they had a regular keypad and everything anyway I think it's a good thing, android on such "normal" phones would be wasted

Huh looking at this pic, I have to say it looks mighty tempting. I mean it looks much better then in the still shots that where made with photshop or something. Also I think its a W995 with a more colorful screen less camera power and no jack but if its cheaper I would go for it.

Posted by Bonovox
Thats alright Prom1 no worries I care for the environment but I think more things are inportant in this respect such as the bloody gasses been pumped out by China India & America. Yes we all play our part but I do wish people would stop blaming only western nations. Anyway sorry folks going off topic I swore I would not get into this But did you know cows produce massive amounts of methane gas

I am waiting to see a NAM version of Elm.

Manila , and we've never had floods this bad before. Deforestration of the surroundings hills & mountains around the city has played a part but the weather has really changed compared to a few years ago - not just here but for many countries in SE Asia.

Back to phones , I'm waiting for a mobile that can get at least 15-20% of it's power from the sun. While I'm a fan of windpower I sort of draw the line to having to wear a miniature windmill on my head just to power my phone

This is the Greenheart edition of Sunny and Susan!!!
No one realize it???
Esato News
They just put Greenheart on it...

Susan and Sunny are the elm and hazel respectively.

Posted by goldenface
I like the curve. You just have to be careful when resting the phone on its back as it will probably scratch quite easily at the contact point.

Or maybe you need to have it face down to be able to have it on a table. XD
