Sony Ericsson W960i Mini-Review 11/09/07

It was another mission to get hold of this beauty but again worth every mile and penny

Had it for a few days and must admit it's easy to fall in love with.

Just thought i'd do a mini-review for my fellow Esato members as i did with the P1i

Anyways here we go, not the best reviewer me but i've done me best.....

No Drooling please!!!!

edit: Video of the phone Here

and another video and another!

Video taken by the W960i Camera outdoors

First some pictures of the beauty

A video of the phone in action, not the best quality but to give you an idea!
Noice when clicking is the surface not the phone lol
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=7zi_8vU720Q
Sorry about the hand movements with the camera..

Comparison Shots

Box contents of my Proto

Handset
battery
Charger
Stylus
You will get more in the final version

Build Quality

Must admit feels quite strong, buttons is what i like very much as its easy to press and text.
Screen is very strong. So far not experienced any creaks, wobbles or loose battery cover.
I find it much different to the W950i build quality wise, prefer this i must say. have definately paid attention to detail on this product and the screen is not like previous models,
it is level with the buttons and very tough, like it alot.
The back of the phone is simple and love the trim around the Lens myself.
Stylus is new and different to the P1i, W950i, will take time getting use to.
Connector for lanyard on the side same as the P1i.
Light comes on when charging the phone, green colour.

Screen

There were a lot of complaints about the screen on the m600i, w950i and p990i,
Mainly about it’s visibility outdoors. I can say this has been improved significantly by
It’s not the best screen in the outdoors but it is very much clearer and brighter.
The 2.6” touch-sensitive display is brilliant for watchin Videos and net surfing.
Touchscreen is very efficient, very hard and stronger than previous models.

UIQ Performance

Multitasking made easy with the W960i, Opened many applications showed no lagging, no slowing down
and overall very easy to use, many applications similar to before.
Watch the video shown above to show speed of applications opening!
application looking good as ever, different moods available to suit any occasion.
Memory at startup shows 76.3mb.
Space available on phone is 7.832gb shown in file manager.

Multimedia

Video Playback, tested video playback at 30 frames per second, which is the superb & smooth.
Same as TV quality encoded through M3 Converter.
Audio Playback, very loud compared to the W950i and P990i and crystal clear.
Speakers show no signs of hissing when playing music or video.
I think this is the loudest phone so far, check the video above which will show what i mean!

Picture Quality

Samples at 3.2mp:

4 photos Uploaded in the Esato Camera phone photos section.
You can enlarge the pictures to see full quality.
More pics will follow if i have more time with the phone!

A video recorded by the Camera outdoors here:
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=muvTtagZyNs
See if you can work out how many frames per second it is?

Connectivity

Wifi as good as the P1i, no problems encountered.
Tested Bluetooth, transfer rate very much quicker than with my W580i and W880i.
USB test not carried out yet.

Negatives

Don't like the new stylus, maybe its because i'm use to the old P series stylus'!
Fingerprints can remain visible on the screen but not too bad, i'm a little fussy
lanyard connector still on the side same as the P1i, not the best place i think..
Green light comes on when charging at the bottom, stays on! May change in final product!

Positives

8gb memory is MASSIVE and will take time to fill up, great for Music and Video fanatics liek me.
Love the Huge screen again great for Videos and surfing the Net and touchscreen, so its brilliant.
Size and weight is brilliant perfectly fits in the pocket, love the build quality.
Transfer rate with PC is very quick.
Wifi works brilliantly using Opera.
Music and Video playback very loud and smooth, no distortions.
Multitasking is easy and flawless on this device.

Overall thoughts

For a prototype the W960i has not done a bad job at all, feels like the final product really does.
Very impressed with the phone functions, applications and the high performance media player.
No need to take an Mp3 player or camera anywhere, just need the W960i.
A definate variet packed, entertainment package from
Video and MP3 fanslike myself can't complain about storage no more
have made another great device, should be a hot seller without doubt
This review has been made on a Prototype and is subject to possible change on the final product

There you go folks, thats all i can say really so far! I still need to carry out more tests
such as video recording, USB transfer speeds, also need to carry out a battery test watching a
full DVD quality video on the phone, if i get time with the phone surely i will.

As always these protos are sold with high demand, currently advertised in the Esato market.
If interested make me an offer by PM and enjoy what i think is indeed a quality package from

Any Q's feel free to ask!

Thanks

Glad you're enjoying the phone, too!

Thanks

that sounds like an awsome phone, thx

"I think this is the loudest SE phone so far, check the video above which will show what i mean!"

Is it really that loud and clear PK??? U have used W910 as well, right... Are they both equally loud or W960 louder???

Thanks a lot for the review!!!

Edit: Can't use the speakers at moment so can't check the video's audio..

thnx
the video recording seems very good and i think it's better than P1

Posted by kyle_274
PK..................can u pls do a w910 mini review.......i wud really like that.....mainly on the music ...not so much on the pic qaulity....thanks

Posted by benitorios
let me guess... video recording was at 15fps, QCIF format...

Now my neck hurts from your 1st video , but it's a good hurt! Amazing how fast the applications open, almost as smooth as on a non-smartphone model.

What's the story with the green light turning on? is there a charge indicator next to the Fastport connector like on the P1i? Does this indicator also work as a missed event indicator?

Thanks a lot for the review, was worth waiting and finally see someone use the phone the way it ought to be used, not like in those first reviews right after the announcement!

Posted by Mikele
PeterKay, what is the memory of free RAM on W960?
Great mini-review

Posted by PeterKay
Much louder than the W910i, this is the loudest i have heard honestly.

Posted by hgautam
Wow... I m going crazy now... He He He...

By the way the W960 cam pics also have the same green tint as P1... And I think its there on the bottom left part also???

Posted by cammerv8
sorry man i drowled!!!!

Posted by xironghostx
hope that green picture thingy is just a software bug or something...

.....but it is probably a hardware issue, or?

i think it's just a software bug, which will be corrected in new firmware.....

Posted by benitorios
@hgautam :

the green tint problem on the P1i is on the bottom ...right-hand side of the picture, it seems. Haven't noticed this problem on the pictures that PeterKay posted, but well in order to notice it, you need a monochrome background which isn't the case in any of the pics.

By the way, i'm slightly disappointed in the picture quality, the pix are quite grainy IMO. My K750i (unmodded) takes sharper pictures than this. Hopefully the camera module will be improved before release.

wow i just love this phone!!! nice mini review...looking forward to the next review

Im really hopping for a better camera at the retail version.... but otherwise.... xcelent phone =D

Posted by kanariya
Just a question, does it support EDGE?

Posted by gola
Now i cant wait

Posted by fbloise
@kanariya
No, it won't support Edge.
I was looking forward about that too, but there is no W9xx that supports Edge.

Thanks,PeterKay!Nice review!
What about music quality through headphones? Is it better than W950i's?Loudness?Bass?(without EQ tuning)
Battery life?
Please make some better quality pictures of the Walkman player.

Hey Peter,

first off thanks a lot for your brief review... I'd consider it a good sign that a stray unit is showing up somewhere, but I'd imagine you worked pretty hard to get ahold of it.... wondering how you pull that off

A few questions...

First off, I've been using SE's A100 interface phones for a few generation models, but I've been interested more recently in the UIQ devices, wanting to somewhat merge what I use a PocketPC for at work (basic calendar stuff, some note-taking with handwriting recog, etc), and my personal stuff (syncing up with Google Calendar...internet, photos etc).

I've got an M600 on loan from a friend to finally get a chance to evaluate the interface... not so much the hardware.. but I do have one question about this as it relates to M600 --- im noticing that earpiece volume on this M is TERRIBLE! Can't hear CRAP. I haven't been following people's experience with this device too closely so I'm not sure if this is an acknowledged issue, but I'm wondering how it compares to those SEs considered to have a good earpiece volume --- K800 is my main phone now, so that's a good reference point I suppose. Any words on that?

Additionally, another member evaluating a unit for Sony Ericsson (jimster71) said that the device does not support the 'Today!' main screen heirarchy menu for calendar/inbox/task events, and only (and ALWAYS) shows the Walkman screen, even when music is not playing. Wondering if this is the same in your unit? I know on this M600 from the main screen I can say More, Preferences, Today, and opt to HIDE it alltogether --- might this be turned on by default, or is it really just GONE?

This is a bit larger a request but... is it possible to post a short video running down the different walkman VISUALIZATIONS? I noticed in Planete-Nokia's pictures of the phone that there are at least 5 or 6 different visualizations that may be applied. Also, can these be set to change dynamically, perhaps I would assume based on MOOD of the music?

Which leads to another question... have you loaded up any music where MOOD information was present? Wondering exactly into how many categories music can be broken down into... also, if I don't want to use the included Sony software (which since yours is proto maybe you dont even have!), and I were syncing with Windows Media Player, if I edited some music in my library and GAVE it a mood (if you right click on a track and open Advanced Tag Editor), would this information be handed off to the Walkman properly, to be sorted? It'd be cool if you could test that --- WMP makes things so easy to sync.

Another question about music... wondering if you could comment on the functionality, both on the HARDWARE and SOFTWARE side, of the music touch keys. In terms of hardware, their tactile feedback (I'd imagine there is NONE -- but now that I think of it, an option for 'vibrate on touch' would be cool), their sensitivity, their effectiveness as the only hardware means of playing/pausing music (since id imagine you can still skip tracks by holding volume keys), and perhaps the evenness of the lighting --- Id noticed in a lot of shots of the phone the lights were looking bad -- yellowish, like bad incandescent. As far as software, wondering if you can confirm what jimster71 said, that the keys are ONLY active when you have music playing in the WALKMAN player or you have the walkman widget HIGHLIGHTED on the standby screen.
I would think it would have been a smarter implementation if these keys were ALWAYS active as long as music was PLAYING -- this way I could control the music while doing anything else on the device without having to A) re-enter the walkman player, or B) exit back to standby, then highlight the walkman widget, then change/pause track.

FINALLY.... anything else different about this unit in terms of software that is different from P1 (and for my reference, I guess different from M600 )

Thanks so much, hope you can get to at least a few of these points!!!

Posted by hgautam
On P1 its only on the right side but on W960 is on the bottom left side as well... And I don't think I need a monochrome background to notice that green tint... I can very well see it on all the P1 cam pics (production version)...

And it seems grainy because the pics have not yet been proccessed like many other phones...

The green tint is also visible in the cam video...

Let's hope that final unit will have a better camera which I highly doubt...

Posted by benitorios
@ hgautam :

My bad, you're absolutely right, there's a green tint on both sides of the picture! That picture with the traffic light and the construction light... the whole left part of the screen is yellow/greenish.... OUCH! This'd better be fixed before release

Posted by PeterKay
Folks, all questions i will try to answer when possible.

The Audio query throught the headset is brilliant, just tested it and no issues and can't believe how loud it is!

Today screen has GONE, well on this proto it has. Only has the shortcuts button and main menu now.

There are 6 mood options in the Walkman player, still testing full functionality, will get back on that one!

Difference in software the w960i has "payment transactions" in other section which i have not seen before! and "exchande activesync" in main menu at the bottom.

Regarding picture qaulity, more pics will be taken soon to confirm greenness!!

Thanks

Free memory is 66.8mb in status.

Battery level is 76% charged Monday morning.

Used quite alot watching videos and Mp3s, so battery so far not bad.

Sorry about the Video lol, not the best video editor myself but thats what i came up with in a rush, will do it better next time.

Yes there is a charge indicator which is the green light which is a little annoying, hope they sort that out!

in addition to these questions, also wondering if you can comment about how the WALKMAN player works when using a FINGER rather than the stylus? Some of the first videos that came out with this device showed that SCROLLING THROUGH LISTS (like albums) was not looking too great, the sensitivity seemed like a problem. Have you tried this out?

Posted by mobilemodman
nice to know that it's camera doesnt have that horrible green tinge problem that the P1 has, hope they fix it soon in the P1, nice review peter, I tried not to drool but hey, makes my P1 look bad

Posted by benitorios

Today screen has GONE, well on this proto it has. Only has the shortcuts button and main menu now.

Mmm i asked this question on the Planete-SE forum yesterday, and i was told that you can actually activate the Today screen (or drop-down list actually), like on M600 and P1i... This info comes from a senior member of Planete-SE who's had the W960 for like 2-3 months. Can you pls double-check whether it can be turned on somewhere in the Settings? It'd be a shame to be stuck with the "Walkman" frame in standby mode... I know matthewf is also eagerly waiting for an answer on this one

Posted by jplacson
Hi Peter, thanks for the great initial review! I'd like to ask about the screen... does it flex when touching it? Is it like the iPhone? (hard glass/plastic)

Would you know if it works via capacitive or resistive technology?

Thanks again!

I hope this phone comes out real soon!!!! My P910i is dying on me already! hehehehe

**I love the sleek and minimal backlight colors... I've grown tired of all the multi-color (blue, green, red, white) keypads and car stereo buttons that are present in almost all products now**

excellent mini review peter.
i would like to ask if this phone has the same quick office functionality as the p1, and are there any features missing from the w960 that the p1 has, aside from the today screen?

Posted by QVGA
Is the audio quality through earphones any better than W950? I am not talking about loudness, but the 'quality' the lows and the high ends.

what's the battery of w960 ?
Li-Po 900 mAh (BST-33)?
or same as P1

Posted by PeterKay
few more answers:

Screen does not flex and is very strong as i said before its not like previous touchscreen models by

Today Screen i cannot find anywhere!!

Quickoffice is available in the Organizer section.

Scrolling through the feature is very easy whether its by finger or stylus, more tests being carried out.

this phone is LOUD...

sold!

Honestly, the W960i is a complete product i think!

The Camera, some may say it doesn't have 5mp, but who needs that? really!

The screen is tough and not flimsy like the P1i or W950i, many users will like the toughness, i do anyway!

The Speaker is the loudest for an and i have used many products, some may complain its too loud

The browser is fast, efficient and bright! no complaints from me so far.

The stylus is a negative for me, very light and easy to break if not careful, and it looks cheap unlike the previous stylus's.

The build quality is brilliant, phone is very light and the keys are just what was needed.

Overall a good product, well designed! Should sell well if the price is right...
