Sony Ericsson todayannounced its newest stereo Bluetooth(TM) Headset, the HBH-DS980. This stylish accessory delivers wireless music and calls with superior sound performance, even in noisy environments. This is achieved through advances in design, ergonomics and audio:
* Digital noise cancellation/echo reduction to reduce background noise
* Bluetooth(TM) 2.0 to deliver better quality voice calls
* A2DP (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile) for high quality sound when
listening to music
* A hidden OLED display delivers a seamless design effect, much brighter
than a conventional LCD display.
"As more and more people choose to store their digital music on their
mobile phone, it becomes increasingly practical to use a Bluetooth(TM)
stereo headset that can deliver quality audio," explains Jacob Sten, head
of the Accessories Business Unit at Sony Ericsson. "This latest headset is
a compact, stylish design that you will want to be seen wearing. It is so
convenient that your phone need never leave your pocket or purse."
With talk time or music playback time of up to 6 hours, the HBH-DS980
was designed with practicality and comfort in mind. Soft silicon ear buds
are provided in three sizes to ensure an optimum fit with the size and
shape of the wearer's ear. Separate to the headset, the overall unit weighs
in at just 27 grams (.95 ounces) -- lightweight for wearing around the
neck.
Finished in a stylish charcoal color, the Stereo Bluetooth(TM) Headset
HBH-DS980 features a hidden 'magic mirror' display that becomes visible
once the headset is activated. Use it to view the title of the song playing
on your phone, the battery status of your headset or the details of the
caller trying to reach you.
You can use the HBH-DS980 with more than one device at the same time.
The new multipoint function allows you to listen to music stored on a
Bluetooth(TM) enabled laptop and handle calls from your phone at the same
time.
The Stereo Bluetooth(TM) Headset HBH-DS980 is designed with the wearer
in mind. As well as maximizing comfort and flexibility, the subtle design
makes it the ideal companion for North American phone models such as the
recently announced Sony Ericsson W580 Walkman(R) phone and the Sony
Ericsson Z750. The HBH-DS980 will be available worldwide from Q3 2007.
The Stereo Bluetooth(TM) Headset HBH-DS980 at a glance:
Facts and Figures * Weight: 27 g (.95 ounces)
* Color: Charcoal
* Talk/standby/music time: up to 6/300/6 hours
* Compatibility: Bluetooth(TM) mobile phones of both
Sony Ericsson and other brands that support the
Bluetooth(TM) A2DP profile
* Auto pairing(TM) feature compatible with the
W550/W600 and future Sony Ericsson Bluetooth(TM)
mobile phones
In-Box * Bluetooth(TM) Headset HBH-DS980
* Standard charger CST-61
* Carrying case

hmm, i would have thought this would support the new A2DP 2.1 EDR...
looking forward to pics tho!
maybe we're going to have to wait longer for that one

Hi all,
I would like to see a picture and whilst i welcome improvements to bluetooth Stereo headsets i can't understand why no 3.5m jack to allow you to use your own headphones. I also hope they have changed the pendant as that thing drove me nuts.
Currently i still believe a wired solution gives the best results and although i know it will get better anything that doesn't allow me to use my own headphones is just not a purchase i will make.
Please SE allow us to plug in our own headphones you have done it with other headsets do it for the Bluetooth headsets also.

Ha Ha. This figures, a day before i get the 970 they announce the 980. Gotta love this industry.

Kinda like Apple announced the iPhone a week after i got the W950i. But i do love the W950i so i care little about that.
Can't wait to see how it looks so i could feel even worse about my purchase.

Glossy finish, but it looks really sleek.
Posted by jcwhite_uk
Whats the difference between the 980 and 970?
A 3.5mm headphone socket would have been useful too.
Posted by batesie
main changes are:
OLED Display
Multi-connect (or something) that allows you to connect to a laptop/pc listen to music and connect to your phone at the same time
Posted by sosojerk
MultiConnect is also present in DS970.
So, mainly no change.
Nice.
Pointless upgrade.
Posted by batesie
also an SE rep said it has an improved firmware
Posted by sosojerk
So?
Meaning exactly what?
What is an improved firmware?Any release notes or something?
I have already DS970 and won't change it for DS980 for sure.
I think it is a trick. A re-launch of the same product because there is none revolutionary available anyway.
Posted by aragorn666
that is a coooooooooool one
any idea about the price
Posted by prototype_bo
it is very classy. OLED display is handy.
but i really need one like Motorollas, that loops around the neck, no strings or display.
wishful thinking guys ..

The DS970 had some issues with the quality of the streamed music - specifcally, 'skipping' during music with high bitrates.

I highly recommend you also look at the Nokia BH-500. I have DS970 (non-fake) and the BH-500 has better sound quality and allows you to use your own headphones - but does not look as cool as the DS980

Did anyone mention that the mic/button are on the same unit (cord) now (as opposed to one on each cord with the DS970)?

I'm really disappointed that they didn't increase the battery life, that's really my only complaint about the HBH-DS970's - 8 hour (workday) battery life is a must, really!

Hello,
does somebody know when it would be available for sale ?

Sony Ericsson's HBH-DS980 Stereo Bluetooth Headset makes it past the FCC
We’ve got word that the successor to the Sony Ericsson HBH-DS970, the HBH-DS980, has just gotten the green-light from the FCC. The DS980 first popped onto our radar some time ago, so we’re excited to finally see this thing coming to The States.
As Dusan said, the Sony Ericsson HBH-DS980 is a “stylish, charcoal-colored accessory [that] weighs just 27 g, but promises to deliver wireless music and calls with superior sound performance, even in noisy environments. The HBH-DS980 supports Bluetooth 2.0 standard along with A2DP (stereo via Bluetooth). The new headset also comes with the digital noise cancellation/echo reduction technology to reduce background noise, battery life that should support up to 6 hours of continuous usage, and the multipoint function to enable pairing with more than a single device at the same time.”
We were expecting this thing to drop in Q3, so this FCC filing puts the newest SE headset on track for a timely launch.
Keep reading for the FCC’s semi-dissected pics.

the batt life is lower compared to DS970, but of course its understandable having all the other features...
6 hours of continuous music is fair enuff for me with all that stuff packed within a very stylish product... id go for that...

I bought my DS970 ones from a proper UK shop for use with my P990i but due to the fact that the P990i won't display aac tags (non DRM iTunes library tracks) & the DS970 has only max. 6 hours battery life I ended up buying the new 8GB iPod Nano with over 24 hour battery and still tend to use that. Must have only used the DS970's 10 times or so (bit of a waste of money for me really).
Does the DS970 have the digital noise cancelling feature like the DS980? Thought they were just normal in-the-ear type noise reduction effect?

Looks like DS980 is available:

i just recieved mine this morning, works great with my k800i
Posted by batesie
great! let us know what the battery life is like

Posted by kalleboo
I got mine today, this this is beautiful!
Phonebook profile is awesome, and the DS980 has true multipoint with a selection menu, not the dual-profile thing of the DS970.
When the screen dims, it shows an animation of bubbles running up the screen, very cool-looking!
Posted by rajravat
the battery life seems similar to what ive read about the ds970, approx 5-6hrs life... slightly dissapointed but is what i expected from it really, kills about half the battery life of my k800i too since its paired all day.

looks lovely in the pics

oh... pretty sweet. like the phone book thing, etc. Tempting to get this too, so tempting if didnt have ds200 already....
Posted by decay_zeit
i would have got tempt too if i didn't have ds970 already

phonebook and call list is awsome..i have to pull my k800 out everytime i want to make a call

but with ds980 it is a real ease
Posted by dagrim1
I'm a proud owner of this headset and it truely is very nice. Also the phonebook thing is a bliss although I have one issue with it...
On my phone I've sorted the contacts on firstname, lastname but when using the headset I get them listed as lastname, firstname. I thought that was just the way it was but on the youtube video I DO see the names as fistname, lastname on the headset.
Is it possible to change this somehow? Because I can't find it...

you may not listen to radio through ds980 and any other bluetooth stereo handsfrees...
you have to connect a wired handsfree to phone as the wire works as the antenna, and as soon as you plug it in,the sound goes into the wired handsfree...in order to have the wired handsfree plugged in and still be able to listen to music through ds980,you need to cut the bluetooth connection and establish it again ( for example get the ds980 far from the phone until it is disconnected and get it close and press the call button to reconnect it)

to those who own a ds980...i have a question.
my ds970 doesn't have this facility,is it also possible to change the album or artist in ds980???

I'm afraid not... just next/previous in the currently playing playlist. Would be very nice to have this option yeah (and the option to fastforward or rewind)

there is always something missing with such devices...they never make them all good...

I wish it had an FM radio on it and a better battery life =)

ill stick to my cabled head phones for now they are better quility sound and where free with the phone lol im guessing this sexy bit of kit cost everyone around £60-£70?
Posted by mguiness
Have just got this headset. It is looking good and sounds good too.
I just can't get phonebook and calls list to work with it though. Any one got any ideas why? Do I have to do anything on my phone (P1i with newest firmware).
