Was: htc desire hd
Hi all!! This my first post here, so be gentle:-) . At present, I own a SE Xperia X10i. But was thinking I might change to the htc desire hd. Android version. Are there any pros and cons that you might be able to advise me of to help with making a decision. As im you can appreciate, I dont wanna buy a new phone and be seriously disappointed afterwards. Any good advice would be appreciated. Thanx.

I have an X10 and a Desire HD and I am very happy with it. The Desire HD is much better than the X10 in many ways in my opinion, one thing that strikes me the most is how much better the camera and video is with the Desire HD, the DHD has better functions and captures shots the X10 just wouldn't be able to, absolutely excellent photo and video features!. Also I love the already loaded maps, points you in the direction your facing no need to use data to look at maps. I love the solid feel of the DHD the X10 is just cheap plastic crap and knowing the DHD will get Gingerbread is a big plus. Also many other things like full flash support, more responsive than the X10 screen wise and just a joy to use.

Don't be put off by reviews of poor battery life, all these smart phones are the exact same with battery eating and the DHD is no different than the X10 with battery. Sony Ericsson has gone down the pan these days I feel and as a phone manufacturer SE just bring out low/mid range phones at best compared to the competition.

I have only wrote this quickly as I'm busy, the DHD is well worth it and definitely one of the best handsets out at this moment.

Overall DHD is better but, IMO, X10 has a better design and a better camera. I've seen pictures of both phones and X10 ones' are much better. And it also is capable of recording HD videos with continuous autofocus

Posted by Toney_Ericsson
You can auto focus with the DHD also, either auto focuses or you can tap anywhere on the screen with photos or video. X10 can't take the same night time photos or video, theres a dual LED flash which you can put permanently on even with video. Awesome features with photos. Theres another feature I like with the DHD you can take automatic portraits either single or with other people.

Video of it below

The Desire HD is much better, excellent build quality too. My X10 is back in it's box and staying there the DHD makes more sense

Posted by Remordere
The only downside I can think of is the battery. It can last you about a day when you tick USB debugging and turn off other features and widgets and the camera isn't good light, but other than that. the best smart phone IMO.

Posted by Toney_Ericsson
Can always adjust screen brightness to increase battery performance and there is that option to kill pretty much everything and other things like Auto Memory Killer once you root the DHD. I'm getting more out of the DHD than the X10. The camera is as good as the photographer, theres a massive thread on xda forum showing what sort of results can be achieved within the settings adjusting ISO and automatic etc also good macro photos can be achieved I have found by zooming in and then using automatic capture.

Another good thing the Desire HD has to be the quickest phone booting up, it has a quick boot system absolutely leaves phones like the iphone 4 trailing

The Desire HD camera is much better than x10 camera. It also has virtually no shutter lag. I have had both and can easily say that the x10 camera is crap.

I've got a really good case for my HTC Desire HD this one here the Case-mate HTC Desire HD Black / Black Tough Case. Its a dual case, a silicone skin on the inside with a hard one on the outside, really good grip.

I am also looking to get this one the Case-mate HTC Desire HD Black / Grey Pop Case, it looks really good

Battery is not an issue with the DHD, Mine has been off charge since 8am, it is now 10:55pm and I have 82% left, X10 would never do that, mine has been in a draw since I got my first Desire, now I just use my Desire and DHD not used an SE phone for months.

DHD is way better than the X10 could ever be, video and camera are excellent, so many things to list that are way better than the X10, as for design, well IMO all htc phones are better designed and built than any SE current phone.

And more important is, with an htc you will get updates far quicker than any SE android phone.

Lest face facts, SE have only just updated to 2.1, when most now are looking to 2.3/2.4, maybe SE will get round to this sometime next year.

HTCs have really shoddy battery life even my Wildfire did after update 2.2.1
it used to last quite awhile before that update though

rumours is HTC are all the same in terms of iffy battery,
the HD is a nicephone I also wanted it to, but I think if you wait then you will find that
newer better HTCs are due to come over the nexts few months ones with much faster processors

Posted by Toney_Ericsson
Have a look at what's eating your battery your probably updating the weather every 2 seconds. Have a good look at syncing, email checking and everything else that consumes battery.

Powerbar widget to switch off WiFi, GPS, BT, Syncing when not needed. I use Apndroid also was using that before on X10.

There are apps to tell if there's anything else eating battery like system info and just change it accordingly, nothing wrong with my DHD battery. Some people on xda are getting 59 hours on a single charge, could even get more if they don't switch the phone on

You said you had a wildfire which isn't in the same league as the Desire let alone a HTC Desire HD.

Posted by Miss UK
Yepp but the other hald has the desire,
the wildfire is basically the same minus the screen try one out

Posted by Toney_Ericsson
The wildfire and X10 are mid range phones I have no intention.

Posted by Miss UK
Don't you have a X10i I assumed you did otherwise
my eyes are playing tricks on me

HTC are easy to use very playful but there quite expensive,
my current phone I got at a very good price is good to last me till Aug or next year where
I believe the better phones will come out!

HTC are bringing out ones with better processors too soon

HD is nice I wanted it myself but its been out a while now and HTC are developing more so we speak

Posted by Toney_Ericsson
Yeah I have an X10, its back in its box. I used to think se were the best but I'm fed up with them lagging behind everyone else these days, there nothing more than a mid range manufacturer these days.

I see the Arc is no different from the X10 and yes later this year there will be dual core and 1GB of RAM pretty much standard and se's Arc only has 512mb RAM and single processor so nothings changing with se. Adding "_____ ENGINE" to any phone will guarantee the clueless consumers will buy though but wheres the performance and support there isn't any it's just bullshit.

I got the DHD because of the excellent screen and features and the other things such as Locations, maps already on the phone no need to use any data connection and points you in the direction your facing works awesome, excellent when in other countries no high data charges as you would get on any other phone. It's really fast browsing on the DHD also with full flash support.

The DHD camera is good also and of course Sense, much better than se's UI and theres always custom roms being made by developers.

Ive been away from
since the 007 K800i

ive comeback now and I must say im rather happy with the X10i
its my 2nd Touch after the P910i

I really am thinking people were just moaning about nothing personally cos it's a great phone
you should bring urs back oput cos the update for another HTC idea is coming Pinch and Zoom

im still watching HTC but im more then happy with what ive got infact imdue a upgrade August but i think thats Unessecary now due to the circumstances that my X10i does the job and its BNIB

Posted by Toney_Ericsson
That MT on the X10 coming isn't the same as whats on the HTC DHD they've already said that and it isn't guaranteed to work with all applications already seen videos showing it on the X10.

lol well the double tap is fine by me anyway

Posted by strauts
i will take DHD for me in next month, im still waiting when contract end. i thinked to get x10 a few months ago, but now all what i want is dhd, cause biger screen, biger memory, faster, newer android, MT, sense.

Posted by se_dude
@strauts- Dont you think you should go for Hallon/Arc instead given its better than the DHD with even a later firmware?

Posted by Toney_Ericsson
It's quite funny how the DHD that came out last year has more RAM at 768 MB and 1.5GB of internal memory and better performance all round including HTC Sense and excellent build quality and all the other excellent features with HTC including Gingerbread and full developer support, compared to shitty se's 512mb RAM phones like the Arc with no internal memory made from the cheapest plastic with zero support.

Theres much better processors coming this year with 1GB RAM minimum and se are bringing out new phones with single core and shitty 512mb which you will be stuck with for a year.

Just shows how outdated and behind se are compared to HTC.

Posted by Miss UK
I wonder if HTC will do a 12MP phone
the cameras are pretty good standard on them though

I really don't get why are doing a Arc its to much like the X10i
maybe they will have something else to show after it anyway, theres that PSP phone too

Posted by Bonovox
That PSP phone is horrible

Posted by volvoman
Unlike HTC, SE have not embraced android and still seem to look on it as a none important OS. Samsung, LG, Motorola and HTC, have embraced it big style, they all produce excellent phones full of features and most have the up to date version of android.

Until SE realise that their overlay is laggy and no where near as good as others, the better it will be.

Why dont SE simply put a standard version of android on their phones, prevent branding from the networks, allowing up to date updates such as froyo and gingerbread and then customers will start to come back in droves.

these phones are not available in latvia, and stil DHD is better. It is hard to change my mind.

Posted by strauts
one thing i'm hoping this phone will be available til 25 feb. and it will not have faulty cam.

Posted by Toney_Ericsson
X10 has lost support se already said it wont be getting Gingerbread, se's answer is to get a new phone. Really rubbish that se won't support consumers for at least the length of a contract where as on the other hand other manufacturers like HTC get full support and especially at places like xda. Se are only putting gingerbread in the Arc as they know nonone will buy it.

The DHD I'm sure will be still available end of Feb, it's a very popular phone and excellent features.

There are some photos popping up of new HTC phones not too much in the way of specs so far but the trend is having the latest and better with HTC with whatever they bring out.

Posted by volvoman
Htc still support things such as the hero and magic, yet SE are stopping support for the X10i.

I personally am looking forward to HTC bring out their tablets, rumours about them releasing at least three different ones, and possibly a new version of sense just for the tablets.

The DHD will be around for some time yet, you can still get the hero and legend and the original desire, so the DHD will be here for a bit yet.

As for the new rumoured HTC phones, there looks to be some really nice stuff coming out, just need to see what is real and what is fake, then wait until one of my contracts is up to upgrade.

Posted by Toney_Ericsson
Yeah I heard that too that HTC are bringing out range of Tablets, good to see.

As I said in the XX10i thread,
I don't think X10i needs the 2.2.1 Froyo Update,

before I updated my Wildfire to that I used to get a decent charge out of it,
then a few days after installing it I found my HTC constantley on charge all the time!

HTCs have really iffy battery life and they need to sort it out BIGTIME!
my X10i lasta way longer then a Wildfire or a Desire so far ive got 4 whole days staright out of my X10i,
whereas the HTC would have needed re-fueling about 4 of that

anyway I hope they sort this issue out in there next line-up of devices!
HTC are good manufacturers Im not missing my Wildfire one bit since the change

Posted by Toney_Ericsson
Yeah well my DHD lasts just the same as my X10.

Theres people on xda getting 59 hours out of a single charge and actually using the phone, yeah sure you can get a week out of an Android phone if you dont use it.

The only reason there was talk about DHD battery life is because theres things like HTC sync, weather options of updating very frequently and all the other updating thats happening things like Twitter, Facebook, Email checking etc etc. But if and once people do set it up correct they will find they there battery life is GREAT!

I have even looked specifically at what is using battery life over 2 weeks on the DHD with an application called Watchdog that has been recommended on xda and absolutely no applications run when it shouldn't, Android 2.2 only uses applications when it needs to hence why you don't even need things such as Task Killers in 2.2 which does actually make newer Android better and of course having full support of all new applications.

The X10 isn't getting gingerbread thats already been said officially by SE, they want consumers to go and buy a new phone instead of supporting their flagship phone properly.

But I dont care in the slightest, I'm very happy with HTC and thats all that matters.

Posted by Toney_Ericsson
Just to give an example of what the DHD camera is like. Took this quick photo this afternoon in London as was passing Selfridges and thats on just normal automatic settings, pointed and shot.

Looks sharp initially but looking full size alot of digital smearing aggressive noise filtering & colour noise is evident(god I sound like a reviewer)

Posted by Tsepz_GP
Reminds me a lot of the camera on the Nokia 5800 with the digital smearing and aggressive noise filtering, it drove me mad when reviewing the N8 as i tried to use the 5800 as a camera when doing size comparison to the X10 and 3GS and the pics came out like the above.

Posted by Bonovox
I never liked the HD camera it has a fast shutter speed but I found them out of focus alot

Posted by Toney_Ericsson
Any photos blown up to the full actual original size has noise. That can be seen in the Arc, X10, iPhone the lot.

This is your photo taken with an X10 at a smaller size, look at all that smearing around the roof especially the peak and yours is a tiny 640 x 480

So whats all that smearing on the X10 blamed on then? operator error?
[ This Message was edited by: Toney_Ericsson on 2011-01-25 20:58 ]

Posted by Bonovox
That edge smearing is Esato cos the original photo viewed on my pc does not have that

Doesn't look like its esato to me

No what I mean is image compression they look worse on here. When I look at the same photo on my pc monitor which by the way is full hd one I don't see that.

Posted by rikken
All image sensors produce noise

Posted by Toney_Ericsson
I know, I have plenty of noise filled X10 photos having the X10 since launch aswell as from cameras with Exmor-R. iPhone etc are no different either and there's plenty of examples of all those on this site as well.

Is the App 3G Watchdog?
I had it on my Ex-Wildfire and now it's on my X10i

Toney, have you bought your DHD outright or have you signed a death sentence for it for 24mths?
reason I ask is well speaking to my other half these new HTC are due out later this year with much
better parts capable of more so to speak

the DHD is just a little upped desire with Bigger appeal and a few more widgets!
I wouldn't swap my X10i for it nor a iPhone 4 ..

it's better to wait for the Bigger boys on the course of months and defo come 2012

BTW Nice Pics the wildfire took some nice shots

Posted by Toney_Ericsson
I only ever get sim free handsets, on an excellent company tariff so I just get new phones.

Theres many reasons the DHD appealed to me over the X10. I fly around Europe a lot so Locations is a BIG deal, maps already downloaded onto the phone, points you in the direction your facing and leads the way its bloody brilliant! No high price network data charges or anything as you get on every other phone, you don't need a network connection with Locations.

Also the latest Android version with full support for coming versions and HTC has by far the best reputation of supporting their handsets.

http://blogs.computerworld.com/17649/android_upgrades

Having apps such as Google Chrome to Phone which only work on new Android version and other apps makes a difference. Full flash support too, instead of having to use a pc I can just use my phone anywhere I am. The user interface Sense does make a lot more sense also, I love it, much quicker than UIX on se and booting up the phone is instant with HTC's fast boot. Theres loads of features that are good.

If I didn't think the DHD was well worth going for I wouldn't have gone for it or keep it.

I've always been a very big phone camera user, the quality of camera has always been the deciding point, I've had all the se cybershots, K800, K810, C905, Satio, Xperia and X10 all them ones if I thought the camera was crap on the DHD I certainly wouldn't be keeping it but it is a good camera and takes quality sharp photos. I've got plenty of excellent quality photos but most are personal photos so I'm not going to start uploading them on here.

This is watchdog that app that was recommended to me on xda, I wanted to find out exactly what was running in the background and having it set on Extreme monitoring in real time shows exactly what was running but turns out nothing was misbehaving so I uninstalled it after 2 weeks using it.

http://www.appbrain.com/app/w[....]er-lite/com.zomut.watchdoglite

There are other similar apps on xda also.

Ahh yer lucky it's nice to get them howver with Vodafone they like to still put there mark on there devices,
it's nice to get a completely clean phone though but when you do you find you cannot get Vodafone Account apps to work and you have to keep viewing online Billing.

I do hope VF do create a Android app though I don't know why they have
dissed it out and just did it for the Apple Phones!

Saw yer Pics with the HDD very nice

I think im missing the Optical Button in a away,
but im not moaning really

The thing with is they do something and then move onto the next thing leaving thta old thing out in the dark,
hence X10i to the Arc.. Impretty sure though people are gunna moan about this new Gingerbread on that Arc next and SE may actually release 2.2.1 for the X10i

but if they don't well it's not a big thing,
I never used the X10i with 1.6 so many bad comments with that funny but people are never really satisfied really
