anyway, got my V3 this afternoon for Ł380 sim free and I'm pretty happy with it so here are a few pics to wrap this up (sorry for the poor quality, I took them quickly in a dimly lit room)

compared with my current phones

and compared with my earlier motorola phones

i didnt know it was THAT thin!

Posted by masseur
I always loved the startac for that but yeah, its surprisingly thin!

Posted by fatreg
its stupidly thin, but ino its too wide!

its seems like phat git at moto decided it would be a good idea to sit an a v600 and call it a V3! LOL

i still want one though!

i dont like how it looks with the flip is closed. it just looks awkward but when u open it up or turn it side ways

Posted by dave_uk
@masseur

I know there's a small bias round here but I'd love a review of the V3, when you've had a bit of a play and if you get a chance in between keeping us 'orrible lot in check!

Thinking about getting one myself as a replacement for a 6230 as my "second phone" (for when the articluated lorry that is the P910i is just TOO big, even for my pockets!).

What do you reckon?

Posted by sorac
hi..

a holded that motorola, i don't like it.. keupad has sound like you would tuch a peace of metall.. , it's nice end thin but wide..
and still motorola...

Posted by DickySnapples
i like the v3,great phone. one thing that annoys me a little bit is how s...l...o...w it is on inputting text

Posted by masseur
really? I have written 2 emails and 3 text messages this morning and I was thinking how snappy it was compared with K700

Posted by ThreeX
@masseur
I would also appreciate very much if you posted at least a brief review! It´s always nicer to read reviews from people you "know" as opposed to magazine testers who frankly sometimes makes me wonder if they got the phone+12 months payed calls+lunch for writing a favorable review
What i am most interested in myself is menu speed, user friendlyness, general usability T9 vs Itap and so on.

Cheers!

Posted by masseur
I'll see what I can do. I haven't had a great deal of time lately due to a new version of our trading system going live last week but things have calmed down now.

gimme a week with this phone but I already like I what I see!

Posted by ThreeX
No problem for me there, IF i go for it, it will be in December when it´s contract renewal time
I have played with the S700 but to my surprise it didn´t trigger my "gotta have" reflex.. It was a nice phone, but camera features is one of the things I value least in a phone + the price made (makes) me cringe, so Right now I lean towards V3 or V800 come December.

Posted by masseur
that was the same feeling for me when I played with the S700 and I was a little dissapointed to feel that way whereas as soon as I saw this I knew it was the phone for me and its probably one I will keep for a very long time which is unusual for me as you may know!

Guys I cant find anywhere else to ask this but did anyone else has probs sending their contacts over via BT. Masseur for example, im guessing you beamed them over from your P910i?

When I send them I get an error message saying Contact to Large, so i send the, one folder at a time (business, personal etc) and then it only copies the last number in each folder! Weird!

Pls shed light on this.

Posted by masseur
For this week I used outlook to export a CSV file with basic info which can then be imported to the Motorola mobile PhoneTools and that can then be synched with the phone

I have ordered the PC220 software (with a full version of mobile PhoneTools) from the UK motorola site and this supports Outlook directly but as usual I won't get that until I get home at the weekend

I didn't try synching from P910 or K700 because the export, import worked so well

Posted by masseur
Ok I tried this from the P910 and the K700 and got the same results on both from that you saw.

Transferring individual contacts worked fine though

Posted by JiggyJaggy
Thanks for that...v.helpful.

I dont really fancy transferring 560 names and nos individually but like you im due to keep this V3 baby for quite a while!

If i remember it did work trandferring from a k700 to v3 via BT so might give this a go later today. Wish me luck!! lol

Posted by masseur
good luck, but as I mentioned I did also try with K700 and got the too large message also

anyway, let me know how you go!

Posted by JiggyJaggy
I have sold my V3 to a friend, but im getting a nother one on upgrade this week. Just wondering if you record voice tags on the V3 does it play them before the phone starts ringing like on many of the SE phones?

PS to those thinking of getting a V3....get it, its fantastic!

I will def be using my P900 as a business phone for email/PDA/Calender and notes/tasks. Then I have my V3 purely for voice calls and as a phone to take out in the evenings!!! This combo will stick around for quite some time with me I think!

Posted by masseur
it doesn't play the name in the phone when the call comes in. I haven't tried the phone with a headset yet so can't comment on that.

I will be pairing and testing my HBH-660 with it at the weekend when I hand over my P910 which I sold yesterday meaning I am exclusively back to my iPAQ again which is great!

btw I really like the default ring tone "hello moto" scared the hell out of me first time I heard it

Posted by fannypad
I quite liked the look of the V3 until I saw your comparison pics. The thing is MASSIVE. Talking on one would be like holding an open tube map to your face.

Still, I've got a fetish for metal phones, so might sneak down to Carphone Warehouse and fondle the dummy for a bit.

Posted by masseur
dunno about MASSIVE but it is wider than the K700 and a few mm narrower than the P910 but that is more than made up by its slimness. as you can see here, it fits nicely into the palm and I don't have big hands.

I'd definitly suggest handling it yourself before being put off by my pics

Posted by Ing. FijoK
Wow, really lite!

Posted by JiggyJaggy
Ha ha its seems quite funny that so many people who have a P900/P910 are choosing the V3 as a second phone to use in the evenings etc. Wise choice young jedi's!!!

Posted by k4m!k4ze
@masseur - hehehe any chance of posting a photo of the v3 beside ur face ? No not covering your face , beside it.

Posted by masseur
the chance of that is somewhere between zero and none

Posted by k4m!k4ze
@masseur - Well i know that ur a great awesome guy who can even make things with probability of zero success to succeed so go ahead make this happen.

Posted by 50Cent
why not get someone else to be the face model for you!

Posted by k4m!k4ze
@50 cent - * pssst.... Dont tell anybody but i'm actually trying to get masseur to post his pic here. Oh and one more thing if we are going to chat nonsense in this thread, he's gonna throw us out *

Posted by mustu
well I got a V3 but now dont like it at all.I dont know where to use it too LOLI use the vertu in the eveing so you know the V3 can replace Vertu in slot.Ha Ha

Posted by masseur
yes, right... moving right along...

with the P910 out the door tomorrow I paired my HBH-660 with the V3 and already after a few calls today I have the feeling that it works much better with the Motorola than it does with the K700!

Voice dialling works fine but there is no caller name given in the headset when receiving a call from people for whom a name is recorded in the phone

on the K700 it often took 5 to 10 seconds to connect to the phone when powering the headset on (as did the HBH-600 before it) but switching the headset on now takes 1 or 2 seconds only to connect with the Moto and it works every time unlike with the K700 which sometimes caused me to power the K700 off and on to get the headset to connect

needless to say I am very happy with this

Posted by JiggyJaggy
Hi guys to those that are concidering getting a V3 I will be writing up a fairly comprehensive review later this afternoon/evening. Watch this space.

Posted by masseur
then you'll beat me to it

I was going to finish mine on Sunday (as I have too much to do tomorrow) so I'll wait and see yours before posting mine... looking forward to it!

Posted by Rookwise
I take it that a RAZR is the phone to go for. Wonder what i'd get knocked off in a trade in against my P900.

Posted by JiggyJaggy
Im using my V3 as a voice phone, and put a spare sim in my P900 and use it purely for data and PDA/PIM functions.

Motorola V3 Review by JiggyJaggy:

Many people have sat up and taken notice of this exclusive handset. But what is all the hype about? Its just another Motorola after all isn’t it? Many like myself fell in love with this phone purely for it’s looks. I have often bought a phone for this reason…but there is more to this phone in terms of everyday usability, and for many people this longetivity appeal is the determining factor.

The “RAZR” as it is knick-named boasts Quad band global usage, a 262,000-colour screen, Bluetooth, VGA Camera, and Stereo speakers, along a host of other that are explored further. The first true “all-metal” phone on the market. It is constructed from Aluminium, keeping the weight low, and coated in fighter plane grade Magnesium (titanium colour).

Price:

This is an exclusive handset. It cost me Ł419 from Carphone Warehouse, but before you go saying that this was a bargain when bought in mid-October, they have put the price UP…yes UP to Ł499.99 im guessing due to it’s popularity. Sneaky of them in my opinion! I predict that it will hold its value far more than other handsets due to its metallic body and exclusive design.

Box and Contents:

The box speaks for itself. Not the usual cardboard made by manufacturers…but an aluminium box, which is pretty heavy! The glass hole shows the phone held within.

Accessories boxed with the phone are as follows:
§ Mains charger
§ Handsfree Kit
§ Leather Case
§ Belt clip
§ USB Data Cable
§ Mini USB tip
§ Motorola screen cleaner
§ CD Software (for synchronisation)
§ Manuals

Initial Impressions:

Initially this phone is very impressive. The sleek lines and cold metal feel match the clarity of the screen to the eye. The screen is RAZR sharp to use a pun! 262,000 colours show well on the phone, and compliment the phone’s body extremely well. The body it self is really a metaphor for the phone. It does feel razor sharp in the hand, and I think that’s what attracts people that old the phone.

Features:

The phone has a plentiful supply of features. It is equipped with a feather touch keypad, which is reminiscent to the V70 keypad in an electric clue colour. It even has subtle rubber piping on the keyboard to distinguish the keys. On first glance this actually looks like metal etching into the keypad. A very elusive and classy look in my opinion!

The internal aerial suits this phone to a tee. It is what essentially spoilt the V600, V500 and previous Vxxx phones. This doesn’t detract from excellent RF quality. I found FULL signal on the phone everywhere I went.

The loudspeaker on the phone is as good as on any phone I have used to date. It is clear and concise and extremely loud. It reminds me of the loudspeaker on the Nokia 6100. This may partly be due to the fact that the loudspeaker is actually on the FRONT of the phone rather than on the back like most phones. The stereo speaker feature may also play a part in this. It should be noted that unlike the K700i the loudspeaker is one touch, which is how It should be in my opinion.

Mp3 ringtones are available on the phone. The 5MB memory is used to hold MP3 tunes or clips. (I found that using a free software tool such as MP3 Audio Converter was useful as it clipped the mp3 files to produce a snip of the full tune, perfect for ringtone use as it take sup less memory.) The ringtones are clear if, slightly on the quiet side. But most IT literate users will be able to manipulate the amplitude of the sound files using software to provide louder ringtones.

For the business user there is a smart j key on the front right of the phone, which is used as a Dictaphone. Excellent for recording conversations when paper is not handy. This is the first fault I found on the phone. You actually have to keep the smart key pressed down while recording. If you let go the recording stops. A downfall in design as the phone is difficult to hold in that position for long periods of time due to its thinness!!! How ironic!

One feature I really liked on the phone was the profile key in the side of the phone when the flip is closed. You simply press the middle key on the right hand side. Then you press the bottom key. Continuously pressing this toggles the phone’s profiles: loud, soft, vibrate, vibrate and ring, silent etc. This was one excellent feature which was ever present in Nokia phones which is now incorporated into the “RAZR”

There is a dedicated message centre key, which takes you instantly to your SMS, Emails, MMS and outboxes is a new addition to the keypad/interface. An excellent feature as people are using Email and MMS as much as SMS slowly. The only down side is that MMS messages are shown in the same folder as SMS, which some users may not appreciate.

The customisable menu is always a plus point for most users. You can choose what functions you can dedicate to which keys. For example you can set “down” on the round navi-key in the middle of the keypad to go straight to phonebook etc. I set one button to “Bluetooth” immediately meaning I could near instantly turn on or off Bluetooth to conserve battery.

Battery:

Battery life was sound for the size of the phone. I never go by hours and days standby…it varies so much how you use your phone. I got two FULL days use using the BT, camera, messing with themes non-stop, 2 hours of calls and the phone was on day and night. Not bad at all seeing as the battery is tiny!

Connectivity:

Email: pop3/imap4 email is available. My orange.net and Hotmail worked perfectly although the email download is MUCH slower than say the P900/P910. It took nearly 2 mins to down load a few emails, where as the P900 took 30 seconds max

Bluetooth: Worked a charm, both for picture and MP3 transfer but also with audio BT. I used a hbh-600, Orange G2 and HS810. Al worked well and never dropped connection.

WAP: This worked equivalent to the V600 although I do not use WAP heavily so could not test thoroughly.

PC/MAC: Mini USB and a data cable is included for synchronisation with PC/MAC. I managed to synch the phone with Outlook fir contacts, these appeared fine the in the phone, but when I had several numbers under one name in Outlook, they appeared separately in the phones contacts list.

Camera:

A VGA camera is a feature on the phone. Several modes are available:

§ Large: 640 x 480
§ Medium: 320 x 240
§ Small (MMS): 160 x 120

Example pictures are as follows…from Large down to small…

These photos really dont do the camera phone justice as I tiook them late a night. Check the "Photos taken with a V3" thread in "Other Manufacturers" forum for better photos from the V3.

I found it strange that there is no “send as” function for the photos; it is set as “copy” which allows you to send a copy of the file to another BT device. Confusing slightly.

The final camera function is like the E700 Samsung; by pressing the bottom side key with the phone flip closed you can take a picture of yourself. This doubles up to assign pictures to contacts and their picture shows on the outside of the phone. Here is a good example:

Games:

Various games are available on the phone including Billiards (pool) and an addictive Golf game, which provides hours of fun. Java games are also downloadable on the 5MB memory.

Size/Weight:

The size of this phone is excellent. It can fit perfectly in the trouser pocket or even shirt pocket without being noticed. A rarety for modern day phones with so many incorporated features.

Value for Money:

This is a phone that will definitely hold its value. Most metal phones of this quality tend to. The Nokia 8850 and 8910 are still holding their financial value because of the design and robust design, even if they do not have the latest of features. It is a very exclusive phone, which I believe would be placed between the Nokia 8850 and the Vertue in terms of its value and appeal.

There is a large gulf between regurgitated and Nokia phones which are all so similar in shape and size. This Motorola is one of the best phones in terms of form and function and really does turn heads. At the same time it is not a rich mans phone, it hold functions for everyday use with reliability and battery to match. There is a substanical gap in the mobile market for high-design, lifestyle phones. Who needs 3G, UMTS when phones look this good and use toady’s technology properly rather than tomorrow’s hopeful technology and let us down.

At first glance, I really thought u were holding a cable in this picture !

The white balance isnt proper in that last picture.

btw in ur office,do u also sit with ur hands on ur head like that fellow in front of ur desk ?

Posted by masseur
yeah I am still learning the best settings for each situation

There is no white balance as such but you can choose between different lighting conditions: Automatic, Sunny, Cloudy, Indoor (home), Indoor (office), Night.

you can also choose various exposure settings

here are a couple more pics with different settings.
