I recently got a p800, i got the o2 website to txt me the auto set up for the wap gprs and mms, they work fine i can access the net.
However, although i can surf i cannot connect to msn through applications such as agilemessenger, and i also cannot send pop3 emails. Now i realise a few of u are on o2 payg online tarrif here so i thought i'd ask if anyone knows what the problem is.
a friend says the settings may allow me to view html and such but full net access is restricted, i need an apn for full access, which i mustnt have with the one i have at the moment?
i'm reluctant to call the customer services line at 50p a minute and just be told that there isnt a solution or somthing along those lines, so any help off u guys would be seriously appreciated.
when trying to send an email i connect fine, then i get the usual message "connecting to smtp.blahblah.com" but nothing happens and it eventually times out, same with agilemessenger and other various msn type messneger programs i've tried.
as i said though, connect and can surf using opera or the regular built in browser.

Your friend is correct.
Most providers have seperate GPRS settings for WAP, internet and MMS. SOftware at the providers end ensures that you cannot use the settings for any other purpose.
Taking orange as an example, they have (at least) three different settings available. They distinguish them by giving them different APNs (which you can see if you inspect the settings on your phone) Therefore the APN "orangewap" is restricted to use through the WAP gateway, "orangemms" is restricted to sending/receiving MMS messages and "orangeinternet" is (basically) unrestricted.
This enables the provider to restrict the end customer and also to charge different rates for each service.

Same here in greece. I have no internet access with webviewer and i cant connect to yahoo servers. Internet gprs is for contracts only. I have prepaid and wap gprs. BUT my gprs is totally free. And i like it!

O2's WAP access point = wap.o2.co.uk, allows access to any type of file, as long as it's over HTTP. So you can view WAP/HTML pages, even download MP3s, as long as they're <1.5Mb and retrieved using the HTTP protocal. This requires using their proxy server. Currently it's free, well, on PAYG anyway. Not sure about on contract. It's good for wanting to view static web pages or message boards etc. on the move, because if you have a Bluetooth USB adaptor and phone, you can use your laptop, or PDA. As well as using Opera (etc.)
The O2 Mobile Web service = mobile.o2.co.uk, allows for full access to all ports, protocols etc. Only available to contract users and you will have to phone CS to activate it. On a "pay as you use" basis, it costs £2.35 per Mb, if you buy a data bundle you could save money.

edit: after talking to customer services it transpires it's not at all possible on payg, so basically u have to be on contract to get the full web access,

Yeah, unfortunately Mobile Web is unavailable on PAYG. When I used to be on O2 contract, I had that service and it was super-convenient, I could chat on MSN Messenger using my PDA when I was out and about, or check the e-mail etc. It was great! (Until I got my bills, which reguarly topped £80 for just Mobile Web).
I got rid of O2 contract after 12 months and went to Orange, but still have O2 PAYG.

Right... MSN Messenger.
It *should* work on GPRS as it supports HTTP proxies (in the newest versions only), all you have to do is enter the proxy IP address and port in the options panel of MSN Mesenger. BUT it doesn't seem to work. The connection icons light up for a while when you hit Sign In but MSN Messenger just times out - no error message, just chucks you back to the welcome page.
It also *should* work on the free 300 minutes service, which allows access to all ports/protocols - so you shouldn't have to enter proxy settings. HOWEVER I have the same problem as above, the connection icons light up for a while but then it times out again.
I have the same problem with Trillian Pro - just times out trying to connect. On the GPRS connection, the program won't even start as it has to authorise itself online everytime you start it up. It does start up on the 300 minutes connection, but times out trying to connect.
Perhaps the time-out needs increasing, but there is no option for that in MSN Messenger's settings. When I was on O2 Mobile Web last year, it would connect to MSN Messenger, but sometimes it took a few tries (same problem as above) and it always took >25 seconds to connect when it did.

In reference to the >1.5megs thing, i seem unable to use any file bigger than 300Kb, including any images, or web pages.
I'm using the O2 GPRS Wap portal, paying nothing, and browsing using the P800 inbuilt browser.

On my laptop it's definately 1.5Mb. Downloads just terminate when they get to ~1.5Mb. Files larger than 1.5Mb normally they just flash up as "Download Completed" when they get to 1.5Mb transferred, when they're not completed, resulting in either an unusable or incomplete file, depending what I'm downloading. Tried download accelerators/resumers like GetRight etc. but haven't made any difference. My guess is that perhaps the wonderful HTTP proxy doesn't support resume requests.
I reguarly download 700, 800kb PDF files and they always download fine first time.
Grrr. On a side note this limit also seems to be enforced on CSD WAP (915000), but at least all ports are open on that number, even if it is only 9.6kbps.

I too had problems with o2 pop3 with an online sim. But got round it by using the ip address for incoming and outgoing server (193.113.160.13) instead of mail.o2.co.uk or whatever it's supposed to be.
