this looks so much better than the p800...wish ericsson still designed the outside of the phones as well as the insides...sony give us money but thats all please!

absolutely not!
just look at the size of that antenna for a start. and the screen is a whole lot smaller than the p800.
is that genuine or just a photoshop knock up?

Posted by mcpants
no its not photoshop its a real proto..ok without the antenna it would be brill

Posted by malcs
Does look nice though-- but i think that they would have found a way to remove the fat antenna!

I thought the prototype was the one used by angelina jolie in tomb raider, the one she placed on the car kit on the land rover :-)

Reminiscent of an oversized t39...
Either the display is to small or the phone is HUGE.
Judging by the number of shortcuts in the top row the phone is HUGE.

The directional pad would be nice...

I think it's some kind of pocketpc/palm thing edited by a rather skillfull photoshop user.. I mean since noone has heard nor seen it before...
Besides. They would NEVER release a phone these days with an antenna like that!

On Cebit 2000 they had a working sample of exactly this unit. There was quite a big show around this device actually. Never released though.

Ok...
Sorry. Didn't know.
2000?
That's quite a while back.. explains the antenna..

It looks way better than p800 (today was the first time I actually held one in my hand, a dummy though) and if it had been adjusted fot the new screen of p800 and they got rid of the antenna it would be cool. Antennas weren't that unusual when that prototype was made anyway. I think it look similar to iPac

Okay, this phone looks way cool, but its kinda strange for top-notch communication company like Ericsson to remain sticking to THIS BIG ANTENNA, even for a high end phone.

Hmm, however, it has a brilliant layout like having some solid keys, instead of relying completely on touch screen system. However I believe this device cannot be used as a handheld phone, but only via the Handsfree, isn't it? Just an observation...

Cheers!

this is genuine, someone posted another photo of this in another thread just recently. it's a big phone, doesn't have a camera, and the antenna is pretty sizable, but it is a few years old now. it was cancelled in favour of what we now know as the p800.

i don't like the directional pad, it's like on siemens. i guess it could be easier for bigger hands?

an ericsson photo of there P800 is unlikely to be found. ericsson would've named the P800 the SC78 thats all i know about it.

This was supposed to be the successor of the R520. Ericsson never released it because they were having financial problems already. This was the photo I posted earlier.

It was huge... but as you can see... it already had UIQ running on it. (UIQ v 1.0, initially called Quartz)

And yes, it needed a headset to be used as a phone. But it did use SD cards instead of the Duo... and yes, it does look better. IF they had just followed this design frame... the P800 would've looked a lot better... oh well... we'll just wait for the Mineral Gray case of the P800!

This message was posted from a P800 with a FrappuccinoŽ machine

In my mind, Sony can design (shape) and finance and let Ericsson engineer. That model is unapealing.

OH MY DEAR LORD..
that antenna is larger than a horse's wand!!

+ I doubt it has a camera built in nor all the cool features we hv built in..
ericsson phones suck.. I think the S in SE makes it worth buying

I can almost recall the Siemens SX-45 (the mega brick) !! Anyhow, this device was not going to be as practical as the P800. Was it a tri-band?

The P800 in fact is 10000000000 times better than this whatyoumaycallit

Looks like Sony made a good job with Ericsson when this joint venture was made.

Well Done SE!

this is all very unfair on ericsson- it's an old picture of a *prototype* phone that may, or may not, have been released long before SE came into being.

as much as i like sony, their input into the technology of SE phones has so far been minimal, and their influence on design has mostly been pretty regrettable.

the p800 owes nothing to sony, other than an umpteen month delay while they got their precious ms duo to work with it. without that, it would have been exactly the same (ericsson) phone, with a more practical memory solution, and been released back at a time when a phone like the p800 would actually have impressed people.

I still think the P800 is impressive..
ppl r still in awe everyday

First of all, this Ericsson device was made back in 2001. It was a completely working prototype. Tri-band, GPRS, Bluetooth, Voice command, UIQ v.1 (Quartz), SD memory, 320x240 16-bit display, 5-way joystick.

Yes it was large... but considering that the only things Sony contributed to this original design to give us the P800 were the jog-dial, camera & MemoryStick Duo (if you call that an advantage)

Sony has great manufacturing, & marketing. Design-wise... they have good designers, and bad ones... apparently, the bad ones went to and drove out the good ones from Ericsson.

Sony can only improve existing technology, they don't really put much importance in R&D... this approach works well in the merger with Ericsson since Ericsson's manufacturing really sucks.

Give credit where credit is due.. Sony contributed money, manufacturing and marketing...Ericsson contributed technology, innovation, and their name. I'm sorry, but as big as Sony is... Sony mobile phones had an ever smaller market than Ericsson... I've never heard anyone call an phone a Sony...but most people still call as Ericsson.

the prototype looks like the apple ipod with an antenna i'd rather the p800.

WELL DONE SE!

I like the design wise except for the anttena! Anyway I agree that the SE phones in the market are still being called mostly Ericsson and noot Sony Ericsson! Prototypes are always like that so people dont bother about it cos I think it wont be out in the market!

I think someone (me) should point out that the latest number from Compaq (HP) the HP 5000 is a similar size & also has a huge ariel, just wait a couple of weeks & see.
NOTE, not the one they have out now (i think its HP5400) or something but the very latest one with built in phone out soon.

you have to understand that there are quite a lot of sony fans in all the se fans and a lot of sony fans like me have never think a bout ericsson is very good. But come on, the big "enemy" if you like, is still nokia.(/i am not sayin that it's bad but It is a competitor)
