“The Xperia Z2 Tablet represents the pinnacle of tablet innovation and is a true flagship in our premium line. While I had the Z and Z Tablet combo, I will be upgrading to the Z2 but not the Z2 Tablet. Partly because my Z died and therefore I need to get a new phone, but also I don't think this tablet is enough of an upgrade to be worthwhile.

It is definitely the best Android tablet out in my eyes, and I would get one if I didn't already have the supremely capable Z Tablet.

Sony mentions this as a gaming tablet many times. Didn't mention the original like that. Seems like a pro tablet is on the cards.

This is literally the closest to the perfect tablet. Vastly superior engineering and design to anything else.

How do you reckon/wish the pro tablet to differ from the one announced?

On a personal note,
I am glad and happy with all the specs crammed into this device. Good to see that the magnetic connector is all compatible across all xperias.

And the thing I am happiest of is that I read in an interview with Kurozumi from Sony that, the LTE radio on it would support voice calls to, so in an effect this can be a big ass phone! I can make this tablet my work phone!

Does anyone know the positioning of the stated quad speakers?

Posted by Ricky D
@Muhammad-Oli

I have the same Z/Tablet combo and I'll be upgrading the tablet rather than the phone and for the same reasoning

I don't see the Z2 as enough of an upgrade over Z1 (I have Z), rather, the Tablet brings a lot of useful things like (supposedly better speaker positioning, better screen resolution and processor upgrade (I use my tablet more than my phone).

Not to mention accessories like the charging speaker dock and keyboard (which comes in 3 different cover options for keyboard cover, keyboard with tablet cover or keyboard on it's own).

And finally, I will be upgrading to the LTE version because I only have the wifi Z Tab and I very quickly realised I needed on the go data (phone hotspot is not good enough to be usable in my opinion).

Posted by u2jewel
So, the LTE version is SPG521, and HSPA+ (3G version) is SGP541??
(according to xperiablog.net)

It sounds counter-intuitive, doesn't it, that the LTE(4G) has the smaller model number?

And also surprised that there would be LTE, HSPA+ and Wi-Fi version, making it 3 models for Z2 tablet, with maybe even more models depending on storage size.

MAybe typo on the site??

Different strokes for different folks! I understand everybody will have different needs.

For me, the tablet is an at-home device where my laptop does the heavy work and the tablet is for entertainment and casual stuff like games, movies and light internet browsing. The Z tablet is more than enough for that and I don't think the Z2 Tablet offers me anything more that I would actually use.

And to be honest, had my Z not died, maybe I wouldn't be getting the Z2 either!

Posted by goldenface
I'd use it much the same way.

I'm actually looking for it to replace my ageing laptop too (the new Bluetooth Keyboard covers should assisted with that).

Really, it's getting very hard to resist buying one and for me it's the most desirable of all the products launched at MWC.

Posted by goldenface
Some clever little accessories have also been announced. I like this Bluetooth Handset with Remote Function.

A remote control which doubles as a handset!

You know, the usual (which doesn't really apply to me). A form of stylus. Software for the stylus. Bigger battery. More software for productivity. Accessories (Sony already have this covered).

Posted by u2jewel
It isn't new or anything, but I recently discovered/started using bluetooth tethering rather than wifi tethering (internet connection for my tablet, which does not have LTE/3G radio, paired with my Z1C)

And I am astonished at the battery saving ability, for both devices, even though internet connection speed via bluetooth is not overwhelming. Anything except youtube will be perfectly fine for me.

I am starting to doubt if I need or want the LTE version, since I always have the phone on me. Lets see the price difference first...

Posted by goldenface
The price difference is £100 according to the link above. I'm after the white version. I hate the way that's £50 more (I already have a 16Gb Msd).

Posted by Ricky D
And again, LTE version only gets 16GB.

I have a 32GB microSD but I find I easily fill that and the 32GB internal on my current Tablet Z.

I guess I'll have to upgrade to a 64GB card.

Does anyone knows if it has an IR Blaster? And the LED location? I'm curious about that

EDIT: It seems it has IR, but I'm still curious about it
[ This Message was edited by: Felimenta97 on 2014-02-28 19:18 ]

Posted by Ricky D
I can't see the LED notification light in te same place as it is on the original Tab Z. My guess (and hope) is that they put it on the screen side of the tablet near the front facing camera or in the top right maybe.

The IR looks the same as it does on last year's model, but I think someone said in the rumours thread that it will have a different set of drivers to make it more usable by 3rd party apps.

I for one would like to see a good free Nikon IR remote shutter release Small App.

Posted by Ricky D
I'm looking closely at the pics for this and it looks like the back panel and sides are all one piece (excepting the flaps of course).

Can anyone who's been in Barcelona this week (or who knows for sure) confirm that?

I read somewhere that it would be more 3rd party friendly too. I lost my remote for the TV...Z2 tablet will do, hopefully!

And can someone remember reading somewhere what this 10W charging capability is for Z2 and Z2 tablet...
It allowed charging of battery to 80% or so in astonishing time, like 30 mins or something.. Now, where is that link I saw the info...

According to androidauthority.com it has Qualcomm Quick Charge 2.0 support. Quite impressive charge times shown here:

Wow! Amazing, and useful for everybody.

Looking at the website, I wasn't aware of this Quick charge tech. And judging by the charging times of my Z Ultra and Z1 Compact, it is hard to tell whether they have normal charging or Quick charge 1.0, because it is somewhere in between..

Either way, we should get very noticeably different charging times!

Philippine launch on 2nd week of April. SRP 33,190 PHP (742 USD).

Posted by Ricky D
Just saw Z2 Tablet has pencil input.

Sorry Z Ultra, decision made. Not in your favour.

Posted by Felimenta97
So, who is going to give me a Tablet Z2? I give my Tab Z in return

I will buy the accessories myself (The Dock Speaker thing and the Bluetooth with built in case thingy)

For real, the XTZ is a hell of a device, but the Tab Z2 beats the hell out of it.

Posted by goldenface
Ha ha, it's my birthday at the end of the month. I'm going to treat myself to one and a couple of accessories.

Posted by Ricky D
It's my birthday at the end of November. Is early April too early for an early birthday to myself?

Absolutely.. NOT...

Posted by goldenface
I agree. Have as many birthdays as you like, we won't tell anyone.

Posted by Ricky D

I'll post pictures when I get one.

Side by side with my Tab Z. White against white. Assuming I can pick up a white LTE version somewhere.

Posted by Ricky D
If goldenface and ofiaich say it's cool then it's cool.

Now just to find an international shipper that is going to have stock on release day and be prompt with shipping, good value and open to pre-orders.

Any ideas? (started a new thread on this issue too)

Posted by goldenface
Did you decide on a shipper let us know the details Ricky.

xperia z tablet review

Posted by Ricky D
I pre-ordered on clove.

I really don't need it but I want it so bad.

I'm looking as well for release of all the accessories - the speaker dock (BSC10), the keyboard (BKC10), the Z Ultra stylus (ES22), the bluetooth remote w/ call handling (BRH10) and maybe the cover too (SCR12). Though not the keyboard that is integrated with the tablet cover, just the keyboard with it's own cover - for future proofing.

If I didn't already have a Nikon DSLR I'd have got the QX100 too. And, if my pockets feel deep enough over the next year I'll pick up the stereo mic.

Anyone want to buy a kidney? I know a guy who's got going, thirty years of age, doesn't drink, doesn't smoke, exercises, needs cash for a stack of electronics.

Posted by goldenface
It's not difficult to see why this is such a desirable tablet.

Waterproof, dust proof, four front facing speakers, built in digital noise cancellation, two HD 1080p cams, the slimmest, lightest 10 slate, PS certified, it can take calls, fantastic screen, etc etc.

@Ricky D
Remember that kid from China who did exactly that, so that he could buy the iPhone and iPad which was the must have thing? (was it fist gen or 2nd?)
I can kind of imagine that he might be regretting this action, but i would love to hear it from his own mouth as to what he thinks of it now....

Posted by Ricky D
He did deeply regret the situation. Mainly because of the complications from the botched operation and the reaction when his mum found out. Can't find the follow-up interview. It was an iPhone 4S I think + a macbook.

There were girls were prepared to sell their virginity for the iPhone 4S too in China.

Since then though Apple has lost a bit of rep in China and the Chinese consumer realised that Note is bigger and, therefore, better.

Another unboxing...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NrFFr_Q52PU&feature=youtu.be

It's in Arabic, but he didn't mention anything new...

He mentioned that this is the retail version...

And also he will do a walkthrough video soon...

Posted by Felimenta97
Is there any video (or maybe even an image) that shows the notification LED location, and it turned on? I'm curious about the location. As far as I read, it is near the front facing camera, but there is no way to see it when it isn't on...

Posted by goldenface
I would like to see a picture of the location of the speakers.

Posted by Ricky D
The speakers are in the bottom corners and they are slit type speaks similar to the handset.

Only two of them which means it is quite easily to cover them both at the same time, unlike the original Tab Z.

Posted by goldenface
Some reports are saying that this tablet has four speakers and others two. Can anyone confirm which?

That came from Sony Mobile's website during MWC. Now:

"Sony’s new S-Force® Front surround audio technology gives you a powerful surround sound effect without the need for multiple stand-alone speakers. For maximum effect, this gaming tablet has two surround sound speakers. And the speakers are carefully placed so that your hands don’t block the sound when holding your tablet."

Z2 Tablet Features

Another review, from Digital Versus. Reasonably comprehensive:

http://www.digitalversus.com/[....]ria-z2-tablet-p19609/test.html

"This one is about as perfect a tablet as you're going to find."

We can probably agree that's a pretty unequivocal conclusion. No complaints either about the battery, despite it remaining the same capacity. DV claimed over 11 hrs of standard use, and 13 hrs after adjusting the settings.

Pros:
Gorgeous display
Top-notch design & finish
Super lightweight
Waterproof body (even with no cover for the audio jack)
Overall responsiveness
Battery life (Stamina Mode even better on Sony's tablets than on its smartphones)
Front camera has ideal quality for video chats

Cons:
Thinner bezel, please
Video Unlimited still has no HD content to view on the over-Full HD screen
Micro-lags when you launch certain games (but everything runs smoothly after that)

According to Three UK, the Xperia Tablet Z was the best performing tablet for the network after the iPad Air and the first Android tab they've been able to sell in some volume.

Oh, you guys think the Tablet Z2 is costing too much in your country? Do you REALLY think 400 pounds is too much (for the 16 Gb, WiFi only version)? What about 939 pounds/1549 dollars for the Brazilian one?

We feel your pain Felimenta97, but that is largely not Sony's making. You can thank your government for high import taxes and duties for that. It would be unreasonable to expect Sony to sell the Z2 below the COGS plus distribution and local excise given the financial constraints they are currently under.

The same taxes apply to most electronics sold in Brazil that are not manufactured within the country. It's why an iPhone costs over $1170 USD. The PS4 is over $1700. Sony did shift some manufacturing to Brazil recently. Perhaps you might benefit from lower prices in the future. I hope so anyway; it is unfortunate that Brazilians must endure absurdly high prices.

You're not alone though. Even in the UK, the cost of a Sony Action Cam is almost twice that of the US. And if you ever live in Singapore, try bringing up the price of a new car. There are some things in the world we cannot change.

Posted by Felimenta97
Yep, I'm aware of that. What makes things even worse, is that people don't do nothing here to change it (I'm assuming you're not Brazillian and you maybe don't know that). They keep those incredibly high taxes because people still keep buying.

I've mentioned this a time or another here in Esato, but I will do it again: when the iPhone 4 or 4S (can't remember which right now) launched here, the 64 Gb version was about 3200 Brazillian Reais, I think (about 1388 USD today). A magazine here did some calculations and if you took a flight from São Paulo to NY, spent a night there, bought the same iPhone, with the same storage size, and came back, you'd still have 100 Brazilian Reais to spent.

Anyway, I took a quick look at the Z2 Tab manual and saw where the LED is. Much better than the Tab Z. However, I still want to see it in action.

Got my z2 tablet today! LTE in white. Bought it in HK. $650, also bought the dock too.
Sony store did not have the noise canceling headphones.... nor the cover... It came with a free screen protector, and thats it.
The HK version has a usb cable, charger which is rated at 1.5A, just like the phones, and a very disappointing pair of headphones. It is the one with the round metal mesh that does not go deep into your ear canal, if u know what I mean...

Thanks to all the congratulations in advance. I am visitor here, and don't have Wi-Fi at all times, so I won't be able to answer questions or requests until day after tomorrow, unless I come across free Wi-Fi again!

anyway,

I arrived in HK this afternoon (from Tokyo), started browsing on the web (sony store HK webiste) in order to do some research on sony cameras, and by chance found out that the Z2 tablet was going on sale today. Kinda lucky!

So I go to the nearest Sony Centre in TST, but found out after a good 10 minute walk that the shop is under ronvation. So I get on the subway, go to the next nearest Sony centre, but after all the journey they tell me that they don't have the cover, or the LTE model in white.

However, on the way out, kinda feeling disappointed, there is a Fortress (electronics store) on the ground floor, so I walk in, just to check.

I ask, but they told me that it had not come in yet, and thats when I realised by chance that there was a big box by my foot, where I was standing. And guess what was inside... shipment of Z2 tablet that had arrived only moments ago, and some other staff were in the process of unpacking it!

Got it there, first customer! and I moaned that the case cover was not available... he said he will give me free the one for Z tablet (previous model) and it kinda fits... so I got that free too!

That's a nice story, you are very lucky, it's as if someone from above is looking down on you today.

Anyway, you must be very happy that you got your tablet and it's the exact version I am after too. If you can let us know what most impresses you about it then that would be cool (if you have the time).

Well done.

Pity about the headphones though.

Posted by Felimenta97
When you have time, could you take a picture of the Status LED while it's on, please?

And, as you said, congratulations for getting it
