Press release:

05 May 2011
Introducing two powerful, versatile and compact smartphones
Xperia™ mini – the world’s smallest HD video recording smartphone
Xperia™ mini pro –intuitive fast messaging in a compact smartphone

May 5th, 2011, London – Sony Ericsson unveils the new Xperia™ mini and Xperia™ mini pro, the latest additions to its Xperia™ family. Building on the success of the original mini series, these innovative smartphones come packed full of features, powered by a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon™ processor, and run the latest platform of Google’s Android™ – Gingerbread 2.3. Beautifully designed, Xperia™ mini and Xperia™ mini pro both integrate best-in-class imaging and display technology from Sony, including Reality Display with Mobile BRAVIA Engine and HD video recording (720p).

The products offer a full multimedia entertainment experience. Xperia™ mini and Xperia™ mini pro enable access to over 150,000 apps on the Android Market™ and has a 3” scratch-resistant, multi-touch glass screen. The improved user interface allows up to 16 apps displayed on the home screen. Facebook inside Xperia™, a feature just announced for the Xperia™ family, provides a unique social media integration.

Xperia™ mini pro brings the optimized slide-out keyboard with smart functionality first seen on the Xperia™ pro to a compact smartphone. A subtle but fast Type & Send functionality eliminates the need to open a dedicated app for each type of message, and Smart Keyboard triggers predictive messaging actions automatically when the user slides out the keyboard. Xperia™ mini pro also comes pre-loaded with Office Suite and McAfee antivirus software, letting consumers manage documents and e-mails instantly and securely while on the move.

Steve Walker, Head of Marketing, Sony Ericsson said, “We wanted to provide consumers even greater choice across the Xperia™ range, while building on the success of the original mini series. These turbo-charged smartphones now contain even more power, enhanced functionality, a larger screen and premium features unique to Sony Ericsson. They are packed full of features, making them a perfect choice for consumers looking for all the benefits of Android and Sony in a beautiful and easy to use compact form factor.”

Sony Ericsson also unveils today a new integration, Facebook inside Xperia™, which will be included in the new Xperia™ mini and mini pro and soon to be available across the wider Xperia™ range. Facebook inside Xperia™ integrates social connections throughout the phone, by making Facebook immediately accessible from the most used areas of the phone such as the picture gallery, music player, phonebook and calendar. As people are becoming increasingly reliant on their smartphones for instant communication, Sony Ericsson is enabling people to ‘like’, share and comment more easily than ever before with Facebook inside Xperia™.

Sony Ericsson Xperia™ mini – Key features
World’s smallest Android™ smartphone with HD video recording
Reality Display with Mobile BRAVIA® Engine
Place up to 16 apps in the corners of your home screen
Over 150,000 apps on Android Market™
Facebook inside. Keeping your friends closer

Sony Ericsson Xperia™ mini pro – Key features
Ergonomic keyboard and smart functions for fast messaging
HD video and Reality Display with Mobile BRAVIA® Engine
Synch your email and view office documents safely on the go
Place up to 16 apps in the corners of your home screen
Over 150,000 apps on Android Market™

Sony Ericsson Xperia™ mini pro and Xperia™ mini with HD will be available globally in selected markets from Q3.

So these mini smartphones have 512mb RAM, while Pro and Neo have only 380mb? Nevermind, they look cool and I like their improved UI. They might become the new best sellers.

Posted by goldenface
They actualy look really nice as well as small and powerful.

Posted by NightBlade
Is it just me, or does that black-on-wine one look very sexy?

Any differencies besides size and physical keyboard between those 2?
Want a new mini pro instead of Arc.
Still have my Satio in second pocket, good enough if want big screen (awfull Nokia symbian), but no need another brick. I just love my X10mini (k850 is better, just lack of WiFi make me unhappy with that piece of art )

Posted by Bonovox
Ohhhhhhhhhhh, drooling over the white one!!!!!!!!!!!!! She is sexy With this having a 1 gighz processor & HVGA screen it will be FAST!!!!!!!!!! I do hope they have improved the keys though as the Mini Pro keys are a little sticky at times I still prefer the Xperia Pro though

The black on wine does indeed look sexy and yes these should be very fast.

Sweet! The perfect replacement for my Mimmi. 512mb of ram is quite impressive for these small monsters. The HD recording is a big plus which makes me happy.

Posted by Alihosny
what is the xLoud technology in the specs?

Posted by tranced
xLoud should be what megabass is for the old phones.

It's thicker cos it is smaller plus the slider out keyboard makes it thicker. Ya gotta compromise somewhere. The older Mini Pro is not that thick anyway.

Posted by mustafabay
Miss the red backed option from the X10 mini pro or a green and black option a la S500 would be nice. So it'll have to be the all black.

Now the question is X10 now or mini pro when it comes out?
The X10 mini pro isn't an option because of the specs my phones last too long

Posted by norbi_nw
design is super! but i have a mini pro. The screen is too small for me now, and you get limited apps because of that.
So im waiting for the Xperia Pro, and hope i wont be disappointed. But i drool at the white mini pro 2...
Waiting for videos. maybe i will drop the Xperia Pro for one of these small pros. Pity it doesnt have HDMI

EDIT: baaah.. i just noticed it has touch buttons for home, more and back Don't like that part of it.

Mobile Bravia included too.

Oh my word they are gorgeous and powerful!!
I'm glad they fitted a 3.0" inch HVGA display and 1GHz CPU, these lil machines are going to fly!
SE are realy showing that they mean business, now we just need to see a dual-core based high-end and they will have the best range in the Android arena.

The PRO version actually has a front-facing camera (mentioned in the second video clip in the link below).

http://www.engadget.com/2011/[....]ia-mini-and-mini-pro-hands-on/

In the first clip it is also mentioned that the minis have a 1200 mAh battery.

Q3 is perfect for my Q4 upgrade turquoise would be cool

Posted by Bonovox
No air gap means no dust getting under the screen too!! And like on the Arc the text looks like it's almost printed on the screen.

Posted by iamstevie
I don't check this thread for one day and all the news is released..!!

Don't know if anyone noticed, but... it uses the Exmor sensor!! And amazingly has the Bravia Engine too. REALLY impressive!!

Does sound crazy thick though. Will wait and see til its released how it feels I guess...

Posted by Bonovox
It's not that thick. What do you expect with the display part & slide keyboard?? You cannot have it skinny

Posted by Arne Anka
Not to mention the bigger battery, which also needs to be sqeezed in somewher.

Posted by Bonovox
True. It is removable isn't it??

Posted by iamstevie
I love it... really love it... but in the youtube videos I've seen, it looks pretty damn chunky!

I guess I was hoping at the very least it will be no bigger than the last mini-pro. The extra 1mm doesn't sound a lot, but when you consider I am currently using this phone:

from about 1972, and that is only 2mm thicker... well... its thick!!

But I guess there needs to be some compromise somewhere, because literally everything else is WAY improved over the original. I just need to see how nicely it fits in my pocket!

That Nokia phone has wings

Posted by NightBlade
They might have been using Red Bull in the manufacturing process back then.

Posted by Bonovox
Nokia sure did some wierd wacky designs back then & odd keypads

Posted by badassmam
Has the 3.5mm jack up top unlike the new Mini where its on the bottom for some odd reason. These Minis are really good, very good looking as well. The new four corner UI thing is nice and its something different. If only they made a Walkman version of this instead of the X8. I have a feeling that these will do better than Neo and Neo Pro.

Posted by iamstevie
Haha!!

You wouldn't believe the order of my last few phones since Dec 2009:
SE G900 (fav phone so far)
X10 Mini Pro (for 1 week - pixel density too small for browsing!!)
iPhone 3GS (for 2 months - ok, but couldnt see fascination)
This flying Nokia for nearly a year lol

Most people normally upgrade their phones, not quite sure what happened there! And I don't even like this phone!

Ah man these phone's have gotta do well haven't they? If they were dual core, they'd probably be considered high-end... crazy specs.

why a August release?

I mean, Arc, Play and Neo (in some markets only) were released in a very timely fashion...

One can only assume the japanase earthquake have possibly played a factor in this? Components being delayed, as a result, delaying the start of production?

Mini Pro has Front Cam
Mini Doesn't have

I was thinking of getting Neo
but Xperia Mini Pro should fit my budget perfectly

Posted by tranced
Defo!

After this X10 Mini Pro I will go for the Xperia Mini Pro.

These names are quite confusing if you ask me.

Xperia Pro, Xperia X10 Mini Pro, Xperia Mini Pro

Posted by jplacson
Hey tranced, I think they decided to drop the numerical model numbers all together for their new line up.

No more X10, X8, etc...

Arc, Play, Neo, Pro, Mini, Mini Pro.

All of them under the Xperia (I'm guessing their flagship line) name.

Posted by jplacson
From the photos and specs, it seems to just be a mm larger all around... So its like the current Mini Pro + protective shell/case. Not too bad considering 2x screen res
