O2 to scrap unlimited data from iPhone 4 launch date

New and upgrading customers’ data will be capped from 24 June
O2 will scrap unlimited data for new and upgrading customers from 24 June.

The operator said that based on current usage patterns, 97% of O2 customers would not need to buy additional data allowances, as the lowest bundle (500Mb) ‘provides at least 2.5 times’ the average O2 customer’s current use.
From 1 July, the network will send texts to customers informing them of their data usage and when they have reached their limit, O2 head of consumer mobile Jonathan Earle told Mobile.

He added that customers would be informed of the new tariffs at the point of sale and on the website.

The 24 June launch date coincides with the release of the iPhone 4. Earle said: ‘[US network] AT&T has taken out unlimited and analysts are saying it is unsustainable. The iPhone is an element of this. We have 2 million iPhone customers but we have seen data use double over four months. It’s unsustainable usage.’

Well it sort of explains the data limits.

I'm shocked to learn that so many people use so little data.
I've used 1.7gig this month without tethering and I'd go mad if I was cut off after 1/2 gig.

O2 actually said 0.2% of their customers use data. How did they work that one out That has to be wrong? I normally have about 100 meg left by the month end

where did you get that figure from? I don't see it in the article and it certainly doesn't sound right

I am sure that average o2 user uses less than the new bundles. however i wonder what the average data used by each iphone user would be?

also if they normally use less data than the new limits imposed, why apply the restirction in the first place.

I think the real reason is that O2 want to find a way to increase their profits as they no longer have the monopoly on UKiphone sales.(or possibly to make up for any loss in profit from allowing cheaper buyouts from existing iphone users).

doesnt affect me either way, all other carriers have similar restrictions anyway.

Surprisingly i have recently returned to O2 and things seem pretty steady i have had no problems. Hopefully this restriction might make their network perform better who knows i am probably talking about something i know little of. I was previously on 3UK and they offer so much data its more than i ever use.

Orange have now announced they will now cap unlimited data this summer. Its said other networks will now follow suit

Surely, if "the lowest bundle (500Mb) ‘provides at least 2.5 times’ the average O2 customer’s current use." then offering unlimited won't do any harm at all. If 200mb is enough, then so is unlimited, and think about what a good selling point that will be. "Truly unlimited data", they've said themselves nobody will use it, so offer it anyway, it sounds good

LoL 3 times O2 cut me off on my 'unlimited' simplicity plan, I have now switched to the 'unlimited' iPhone simplicity plan (with the Nexus One) and so far so good I have had 3 months with the same 1GB+ usage and I haven't been cut off, I used to get warned at 450MB and then cut off at 500MB!

Nobody believes me though....

Hmmm, no more unlimited discussions though
