C510, email client disconnects

I have a C510 and use the provided email client to check push email via an IMAP connection. All is well on that front and emails arrive whilst the phone is on.

However, if the phone signal is lost (for example going through a long tunnel) then when the signal reconnects the email client does not.

The phone shows a 3g or HSPDA connection, but the little globe icon disappears and no email is detected until I go back into the email client and recheck mail. Then it connects and continues as normal.

Any ideas on how to keep a persistent connection?
