Can someone clarify something for me with regards to the iPhone on o2 pay as you go. Would it be correct that with the wifi when abroad you would be charged to use wifi on o2 pay as you go?

there is no wifi roaming with O2 on pay monthly or payg

you simply pay the wifi provider directly

I can't understand why you need to pay for wifi, is the iPhone not like the iPod Touch where you can simply hope onto a wifi network say at a cafe abroad that offers free wifi for customers or say at a hotel lobby which offers the same free wifi and just use that? I just my 32GB Touch in this way.

I'm just basically trying to find out for sure if you can say use your own wifi network at home in the UK with the iPhone on pay as you go and then say when abroad use alternatives like the free wifi that is offered absolutely everywhere without being charged by o2 or anyone else to do so, I mean wifi is absolutely everywhere to use free.

It's just I noticed on the o2 website this

*Unlimited data and Wi-Fi applies to use in the UK only, subject to excessive usage policy. Unlimited Wi-Fi is available at any of the Wi-Fi hotspots from our partners The Cloud or BT Openzone. Terms apply

yes, of course if you connect to a free wifi hotspot whlie abroad, it will be free for you too

basically while roaming, O2 is out of the equation when it comes to wifi, so you pay the provider if its a paid service, or you use it free if its a free service, just as you would if you were using the wifi service with a laptop

If you are outside the UK and the hotel or cafe or local places are offering you free wifi. Then yes you can activate your wifi function and log on to the wifi that may be free outside the UK.

I see thanks to you both, I thought it was some kind of funny thing o2 implemented on customers as I see from here Link text... that not all functions seem to be available to Pay as you go customers in this statement

"Don't forget, if you're on Pay & Go, you won't be able to get Visual Voicemail, call merging or Internet tethering. And you'll need to change your data (APN) settings to use services like mobile internet."

Something I know about o2 pay as you go compared to o2 contract is STILL after years o2 pay as you go isn't the same as o2 contract in terms of mobile internet quality, both customers contract and pay as you go are two different platforms and of course pay as you go are worst off as the mobile internet is slower and some sites won't work as well like You Tube for streaming and now I'm seeing this about the iPhone on pay as you go where some functionality isn't there for pay as you go customers.

It should all be the same I think as these days everyone's going for pay as you go as noone wants an 18 or 24 month contract and you can basically get the same kind of deals like free calls and unlimited texts to other people on the same network.

At least you can use wifi abroad for free thanks for confirming that, I thought o2 were charging for it.
