Today its going back,,,,,,,,,,,,,,yes the X1 i waited so long for has had its day, its far to smart for the likes of me, some twit at SE thought i know lets fill it with windows mobile, make it so that every operation requires as many key pushes, finger swipes, as possible, and make the touch screen icons for the start menu and the on screen kwerty key pad snuggly fit the fingers of a 3 year old child. Panels PAH! they are just themes, pointless absolutely pointless, thats if you can get any that really make the experiance easy and pleasant with just about 5 minutes of real user experiance they could/should have had a total winner.
Next time SE call me.
Yes im sorry for ranting, but its such a bloody dissapointment, silver keys on a silver keyboard with light grey letters on them, who the **** came up with that brain wave, a mobile device thats got so much potential, buggered by some idiots in the lets make it look flash dept.
Here's some pointers.
1) Keep the basics simple its a phone first.
2) Ask users to try it and listen to feedback BEFORE putting it into production.
3) Ignore the (make it look flash dept) sack them!
4) On screen keys/icons should be big enough for grown up fingers, the stylus should be redundant.
5) To personalise the phone, you should not have to spend days on line or be a programer.
6) From taking out of the box, it should take no longer than 1 day to make the PHONE/device in its basic format exactly as i want it, at least in apperance and functionallity. Should i want to ad extra programmes after that such as converter or maps for example thats fine but make the UI, thats user interface to you guys at SE as simple as you can.
Many of you guys are very happy with your Xperia phones, and for that i'm pleased for you, i'm not saying you made the wrong choices, stick with it, but dont be afraid to say if you aint happy.
Finalle,
Am now about to change it for the Serra, i know that under the skin its the same device, but at least after playing with one in an o2 shop HTC seem to have addressed most of my issues, groans and moans.
Wish me luck.
Up date-put X1 in post today 18/03/2009.....did i do the right thing???????? am i stuck in the form over function camp?
Watch this space!
Yahooooooooooooo!
Got the little bugger at last, its bloody brilliant, quality over flash, the way its put together, the UI, the whole feel is better, ive only had the beuty 2 days so im not going to try to list the differences yet but, give me a week or so.

Made an amusing read, i think your right, i think SE fell off a cliff with that phone & landed on top of it, you do know its also made by HTC, i bought all the SE smartphones as they came out, not to be brand loyal but because they were always the best phone, wm6.1 is not ideal on the X1 size screen, i got an HTC touch HD in November & havnt looked back its a superb phone, i only wish i could have given the £500 it cost to SE as they had supplied me fantastic reliable phones since the t68, its a shame, i used an X1 when they released it & like many people now i spend more time online on my phone than i do my laptop & that phones screen is just too small, your phone is an important part of everyday life its a tool, not just something to show people & say "hey look its just like an impractically minature laptop"

What is . . SERRA Nokia E90 is far much better than the X1 !

Posted by gtr83
Sorry Jojo, not true... If you said iPhone 3G, BB Bold or Touch HD I might have agreed.

Posted by Tsepz_GP
For a 2yearold device the E90 really does give the X1 a run for its money though, even considering the powerfull PowerVR MBX2 Grapics Processing Unit the E90 has, from what i remember the iPhone uses the lite version of the same GPU.

Back again,
Ok guys now had a few weeks getting to know the XdaSerra aka
HtcTouchPro
So my results, and remember these are my findings, personnal preferences.
1) HTC Flush screen, amazing i dont have to contort my grown up finger, or resort to the stylus to open the start menu. i just Touch the screen.
2) External speaker, instead of being at a point on the phone where my hand rather inconveniently covers it up, HTC have put it on the back where it provides clear sound.
3) Touch flo, one easy layout, that from day one was understandable and usable for grown up fingers.
4) Texting, i can do this one handed, just like a real phone, i dont need to open the keyboard or get the stylus out.
5) All icons and menus are for grown up fingers.
6) Operating manual, HTC 300 pages plus, SE X-1 manual 30 pages plus.
7) Keyboard, white letters on black keys, so easy to read.
No panels, just easy straight forward navigation.

What dont i like, what did SE get right,
The 3 mm headphone socket, HTC should have put that on their own device.
Camera button exactly where it should be.

Plaese feel free to make your own lists, as i said these are just my preferences, anyhow go to it guys and good luck.

HaHaHa,

Now the flash no substance gadget guys are being drawn in, at last this is where it gets to be fun!

1.I respect your opinion even some of them sound ridiculous especially when commenting about the color of the hardware keyboard.

2. some people like touch flow concept and some like panels. I've used touch flow as one of the panel long time ago and now, it isn't in my 9 panel list anymore. I have to give priority to othe panels. Man, now I feel 9 panels are not enaough !.

3. Ease of use, personilizing, customizing are down to the windows mobile characteristics rather than xperia attributes. Panels are the easiest way of personilizing the phone with two touch: 1 click for the x panel button and another touch for selecting the required panel.

4. one of the reason why I dont like touch flow is too much scrolling to get what you want. this maybe why one of the panel I frequently use is SE panel where I can acceess all the frequently used application with one touch (i.e. sms/email, calendare, task, vibrate function, contacts, opera, tomtom, music player)...all within one touch. To me, there is no question regarding ease of use. what more can you ask when you can access everything with one touch.

5. the default onscreen winmo keyboard is small. for this reason, I install finger keyboard. I really hope, this type of keyboard should be bundled together by default.

6. the icons are big enough for lare fingers. I'm referring to icons under SE panel or SPB panel. Unless your fingers are as big as hulk.

7. Maybe some people don't like stylus and to some, stylus is last generation. But I like stylus and one of the reason I don't like iphone. Why I want stylus ? hee, I like to draw caricature on my phone to kill time. There is one time, my friend use my phone to create a signature and use this signature for all his word document letter. You can't draw (for example: a direction map) without stylus.

8. In the beginning I thought, I'm the only one who like the panel concept, but recently when I see a lot of people requesting SPB mobile shell 3.0 to be made as panel option (in spb forum and xda forum), I realise there are a lot of people prefer panel. looking from the response, I beleive the panel is not a gimmick anymore.

9. I think there must be a reason why xperia is voted as the most preferred winmo phone in the xda poll. The poll is here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=446362 . Xperia is leading all the way from the beginning.

p/s: this whole reply was written on the xperia phone using the hardware keyboard.

MyP910

You just share my feelings which I expressed many times on Xperia thread.....
Panels rule for me. As well as most of xperia elements.....

Posted by koto
@MyP910

I have the same opinion. Xperia is by far the best phone I had, and it is a small laptot, not just for braging to friends. I laugh when I read other comments and wonder how it is possible that people feel their opinion is the ultimate fact.

Posted by number2
Sorry chum, its all just my opinion, and my personnal preferences.

Read this with interest.

Anyway. Since You seem to have some experience with both the X1 AND HTC Touch pro now I have a few questions. Ofcourse anyone who knows the answer please respond aswell.

You switched from X1 to HTC. What do you think of Samsung's Omnia? The WM-version (not the Omnia HD). Because I'm torn between either going for the X1 or the Omnia which can be had for a pretty good price nowadays.

I've already read the various reviews about it. So I know it takes great pics. The 600MHz cpu is as fast as a 500MHz cpu (in e.g. HTC Touch), it also has another touch-friendly layer on top of WM6.1, etc...etc...

Now the real questions.

1) In dumb SE-phones whenever an SMS arrives with a number in it. They are treated as phone numbers and you can dial them immediatly without jotting them down, switching to phone-mode and inputting them again. Is there a similar feature in those WM-devices or do you use copy-and-paste. Is there a copy-and-paste function at all in X1 or other WM devices?

2) Can the LED-light be used as a flash (on X1 I guess because the HTC doesn't have a LED)? I previously had a K750i (and currently a K550i) and I absolutely NEED that light sometimes. If someone knows whether this is also possible on the omnia (which does have a LED-flash) also let me know please?

3) I currently have in Office Outlook 2 adress-books (with categories set to divide family from friends from colleagues). Is it possible to use multiple contactlist in the X1 (or other WM-devices for that matter)? Or can I put everything in one adressbook and use the categories function to separate business contacts from personal/family-contacts? Which is NOT possible currently with ,y dumb-SE phone. It has neither the categories-separator nor the ability to have multiple adress-books.

Thanks in advance,

EPDM

1) Yes, there's copy'n paste.
The number in sms or note can be dialed instantly.

2) Yes, with 3rd party free app.
But it cannot be used for too long - there are cases of melting leds, led misplacement and vibrator - damage.

3) AFAIK no categories/folders in contacts.
But the VIEW can be filtered by name, company and last viewed.

number2,
I find the speaker of x1i to be better than touch pro.

#3) Yes, contacts can be organized into user-defined categories. This is a standard feature. So you can define different groups of people. Using call manager software you can have separate call behaviors for each category such as hangup, send an sms, reject to voicemail, etc.

The calendar app also uses these same categories that you create.

So where are they in contacts?
Like user-defined folders?
I can't see it there.

Posted by WhyBe
When you are creating a contact, there is a field near the bottom that says Categories. Click there and the rest should be self-explanatory.

The call manager part is through third-party software (which works in conjuntion with contacts).

Thanks, found that.

Thanks for the quick replies.

I forgot one question.

In current dumb-SE phones its possible to record an ongoing conversation. Is this also possible on Windows Mobile phones? Or is it possible with a 3rd party application?

Or does certain phones have that (e.g. X1, from it's SE roots, while others don't have it)

Thanks in advance.

With regards to 1).

I am not refering to the telno. that sended the textmessage but to a number written inside a SMS-message or MMS or email for that matter.

Oh does the X1 also have voice dailing? Or the HTC or the Omnia? Or is this a standard feature in WM6.1?

I know I'm asking a lot but these are the things that I take for granted in a "dumb-"SE phone and I want to be sure that a suposedly "Smart-"phone is indeed a step-up.

BTW. Since the Nokia 5800 XPressmusic (or Omnia HD for that matter) is very similar to the upcoming Satio (OS wise that is). How does Symbian OS fares with my feature questions.

1) Can you dial a telno. which is written down in an SMS-message directly?
2) LED-light as flash (this can only be answered when Satio is really out I guess)
3) what with multiple address-books (or does it also have a category field like Outlook/Mobile outlook)
4) Can it record ongoing phone-conversations
5) Voice dialing? (I guess that this should be pretty standard on any smartphone by now)

Again. Thanks in advance.

If at the end it means that I'll stick with another dumb-SE phone for now it'll probably be the C510 since it behaves as much as my current K550i. The only problem is that I'm not very happy with SE's built quality nor their quality control. This is my 2nd K550i (the first one had a daft cam-module and was replaced after 1 day) and 2 days ago I discovered (after a few missed calls) that my vibration doesn't work anymore. It's just that the features in SE's dumbphones are amazing. I mean these 5 questions are thing that I take for granted after the last few SE-cellphones (from T68, T610, K750 & K550). I previously also had a P800 but that was so long ago I can't remember what features it had. Needless to say I didn't have if very long.

Cheers

YES you can dial in WM from sms or any text in phone like note etc.

Numbers in SMS messages appear as links. So yes, you can dial or email directly from a message.

2) LED-light as flash (this can only be answered when Satio is really out I guess)

There are apps for using the light as a flashlight.

3) what with multiple address-books (or does it also have a category field like Outlook/Mobile outlook)

Yes, there is a category field in contacts.

4) Can it record ongoing phone-conversations

Yes, this is a built-in feature (even though it's buried in the notes app). You also have to use the speaker phone for it to be effective

5) Voice dialing? (I guess that this should be pretty standard on any smartphone by now)

You can purchase Microsoft Voice Command 1.6 which lets you make calls, start programs, listen to SMS, play media files and query your upcoming appointments all by voice. They'll be making a big deal about this on the iPhone 3.0 real soon...

It was hard to choose between the X1 or the Omnia. HTC is no option since I read too much of quality issues with it. In fact HTC used to make lot of pocket PC's in the past for other companies and there's always something wrong with their devices. The same with their feature set. They ALWAYS leave out something that all the others (should) have. For instance I looked at the HTC Diamond but decided against it because of horrible battery-life and no LED flash. In fact the only device with LED flash they have is indeed the Touch pro (even their newer devices still lack this). On my K550i I used the LED as a torch much more often then as a flash therefore I want a LED lamp. Between the Touch pro and X1 I'd go for the X1 because o/t better battery and larger screen.

Unfortunatly I kept hearing (and seeing) too many X1 users with cracked cases and paint peeling off. I heard less about problems with the Omnia. So in the end I bought the Omnia.

I haven't regret my decision yet. It's fast, it looks good (IMHO the full black version looks really great), takes great pics (you need to scale them down for the full effect though) and it has a LED light that you can intuitively activate from the home screen. I must say this is my best Windows Mobile device yet.

I would have bought SE Saito (or whatever it's called) but it just takes so ridiculously long. While it's in fact no more than a souped up Xpressmusic 5800.

SE is loosing its loyal customers. First by producing crappy low-quality hardware and then by letting us wait too long for really exciting devices.
