G900 @ 5MP:

G900 @ 3MP

K800 @ 3MP:

Posted by ares
mmm...i think G700 photos will be exactly the same...no need for separate thread

Posted by SE-Naz
I would say keep it here... Just for people to make it clear which handset picture was taken with...

Cheers
ENJOY

Is it time for me to wear glasses or is the quality of these photos really as bad as that of a pic taken with any 2 mp fixfocus phone camera ?

Posted by AD
I have to say that the K800 wins hands down in that comparison, far less noise, better colour balance, sharper........

First thing I do on my G900 will be setting resolution to 3MP. It's sufficient and (as it seems) the true resolution of the cam module.

Why put in a 5MP camera if its crap? You shouldn't have to put it to 3MP, thats like buying a Ferrari and only driving it in first gear. All the 3.2MP SE phones give good pictures, I guess its their limit.

3.2mp is the limit of what the tiny sensors can coupe with, by setting a 5mp phone to 3mp the phone just resizes the pic down to 3mp it doesn't use less megapixels lol.

Posted by spine6
What a 5mp camera you got there.. I never thought that the g900 will come with a crap camera...

Posted by AbuBasim
I think it's the fault of the lens. Same problem with the i-mobile 902. With the crappy lens (made by Sony actually as the whole camera module is produced by them) you don't see any noticeable loss of detail when scaling down photos from 5 MP to 3 MP.

I read somewhere that 3 MP is the limit with the small millimeter-sized lenses used in camphones. They will never achieve good photo quality until they fit the camphones with larger lenses.

Here's one example: I borrowed this well known shot (an excellent photo by DarkMagician) from the Photos gallery and then shrunk it to 3 MP (2048x1536) and then enlarged it again to 5 MP and applied a bit of sharpening. Below is a crop of that treated photo and a crop of the original. Anyway care to guess which one is which?

k800 has much bigger lens. You have to remember that G900 is not a Cybershot phone. Although I doubt C902 will be much better either...

K800 bigger lens? How much bigger? Do you know the actual size?

Posted by myth®

@Abu

I would say that the upper pic is the modified one.

Posted by AbuBasim
Sure?

Posted by myth®

I'm not an expert, but yes, I noticed that the sharpness goes over the entire pic and I do not believe that the lens of a phone cam can provide such a depth of field (or whatever it is called).

And it doesn't look natural either, I mean the sharpness.

If the camera was focused on the beak, distant parts like the eyes should look smoother (as it is the case on the second pic).

But I could be wrong

@myth,

The lower one is the modified. I used PaintShop Pro to resize (using Weighted Average) to 2048x1536 and then enlarge to 2592x1944 again (using Bicubic with 75 percent sharpness) and then applied some more sharpness to simulate how the K850 is overdoing this in camera. As you can see, the end result is pretty much the same. At least close enough for you to pick the wrong one And that is my point: the lens is too small to allow the full potential of the 5 MP sensor. And this is why scaled down G900 photos do not look that much better than those from the K800.

I will do the same later today with one of the N95 photos. I don't think the Zeiss lens will make much difference.

I heard that N95 has a 3.2MP sensor and pics are upsampled from 3.2MP to 5MP. So can't it be the prove that K850 is doing the same thing? you resize pic to actual size(3.2MP) and then enlarge it the same way K850 will do, and the result is close enough. it's possible, isn't it?

That would be good.

@Abu

Hmm, well..

But the second pic really looks more natural and realistic.

It has 5MP sensor made by micron. http://www.chipworks.com/blogs.aspx?id=3620&blogid=86 here you have proof that it has 5mp sensor and please stop with things like "it has 3,2mp but it just interpolates them to 5mp' cause its not true. End of story

Nokia N95 8GB sample. This time I borrowed Paschen's excellent photo here:

The point with this slightly off-topic stuff is to show that it's not the fault of the G900 alone that it's photos do not look much better than those from the G700. The problem is the small lens.

Posted by myth®

Doesn't really matter if the sensor is 3, 5 or 10 mp.

Pic quality counts and I believe that no one here is impressed so far.

Picture taken in a completely dark room. Pitch black, if you want it.

amazing how the first couple of photos posted were so blurry compared to these later ones. i wonder what the difference was? operator error?

Most of those pictures were taken i Sweden. It has been very bright and (unusually) sunny the last coupe of days and the majority of the pictures were taken outdoors as well.

Some new pictures taken by a G900 user of planete-nokia forum (Mr Chang member)

Pics with some settings

Night shots...

You can see it here : http://www.planete-nokia.com/[....]ndex.php?showtopic=51239&st=60

Can someone upload a sample video? I'm curious if it's any better than p990i.

Posted by moogoo
looks to me that photo quality seems to be operator dependent.

Good to know that G900 is capable of impressive photos. I'm very impressed and depending on what the 17th announcement offers, I may purchase one.

Posted by soulsaber
why would picture quality be operator dependent? doesn't it all come from the same factory?

Posted by karlsson
Indoor picture and closeup with G700.

Sorry! a dubbeltap. Here is the other.

in theory it could be different but that would be due to operator specific firmware and im sure all the G series bought so far are generic sim free handsets so that cannot be the case.

Don't be confused. The first couple of shots appears to be blurry because they are posted in FULL RESOLUTION. that is actually the best picture/post to evaluate the quality of pictures taken by G900.

the subsequent pictures posted after that are posted in a forum format. Those are resized down to best fit the forum. They appear to be much better because the pictures are compressed, the blurry image would get sharper and the noise would be minimized to the point that you can't see it.
