The Sony Ericsson G700 and G900 were the two models that impressed me most at today's first meeting with the total of 7 new models. 11 February 2008
The Sony Ericsson G700 and G900 did not have the best specifications of the phones presented today, but the touch screen is a very nice feature that I am sure has come here to stay on even mid-range models. It just felt so natural to touch on the display to select what you want. I am a regular user of the P1i and K850. In my eyes, the K850 has a "fake" touchdisplay fooling me into using the finger on the display when navigating. The P1 has a real touch display, but the response from the OS is not very fast. On G900 and G700 the feedback from the operating system was instant. If the price is set correct, I think this will be a best seller. Way to go Sony Ericsson.
It was stressed that the G900 not is a smartphone but it has got a syncronizable notebook and a dedicated notebook key. It has also customizable favourite application bar at the bottom of the display. These are not dragable as in the iPhone UI but they will scroll when you navigate using the joystick.
Video demonstrating the camera interface on the G900. Pardon the wiggle. The demonstrater was not able to hold the device steady :-)
Press release:
The new G700 and G900 phones are designed to give back time. They place personal organiser features and easy finger-touch control within familiar form factors.
Sony Ericsson today launched a new generation of phone: Touchscreen organisers with a broad appeal. The G700 and G900 phones are essential tools designed to organise the lives of all those with busy schedules to juggle, both at home and at work.
The G700 is here to help you live your life to the full. This personal organiser in-your-pocket keeps your contacts, calendars, notes, pictures and favourite Web sites all in one place and just a fingertip away. Touch and go. The G900 has all the functions of the G700 with the added features of a unique new 5.0 megapixel Touch Auto Focus camera, touch photo album and editor. Perfect for those looking for a one-touch media experience combined with their organiser. "Sony Ericsson is delivering touchscreen and innovative organiser capabilities to a wide audience without compromising on the size or shape of the phone. Both the G700 and G900 have regular keyboards and are no larger than a regular phone." says Martin Winkler, Director Global Marketing and Head of Multimedia Web at Sony Ericsson. "These phones are ideal for users that are only interested in making their lives simpler. It’s not about technology for the sake of it."

Actually in P1i latest firmware the touch screen reacts very good and it is very fast as well. ;)

Finally SE's high-end moves in the right direction but the 2 yr old K610 type styling limits the appeal IMO. Still lacks alot of N95/N96 functionality and no chance of stealing sales from the iPhone, lol

nice to see compact smartphones. very impressed with the battery life considering the touch screens are used. liking the 900's stats (something that impresses me enough to be a potential purchase!)
hats off to SE, i dont care about wifi though. if im in a hotspot...i'll use a laptop, and a little confused as to why there is a keypad if the touch screen is there and can act as one (perhaps some handsfree law, idk).

Whose voices do we hear in the demonstration videos?

Finally a decent phone that I've been waiting for from SE!

hey people any idea about the rates of g900
By atif on 12 Feb 11:07
And once again, SE leaves North America out in the cold. So much for their "major push" in this market.
SE just made the iPhone even more appealing.

I wonder what those phones will run on. Based on the shots here it's some version of UIQ. Looks nice, in any case. Good to see some smaller Symbian OS phones from SE.
