3g iPhone discussion

I guess its time to have a 3g iPhone discussion since there have been many rumours around and more recently, O2 and cpw to drop iPhone price by £100 until 1st June and Latest Firmware Reveals 3G iPhone Chipset (trusted reviews).

now, I see 3G iPhone confirmed in Italy (engadget)

Its gonna happen, most suspect at the June announcement... so lets hope!

Posted by belialwafu
Do you think i'll wait for it or get the w910i? Oooohh this is confusing..its getting cheap haha!

Posted by shanespencer
I'm not too fussed at the 3G aspect of the phone (3G is non-existent where I live); it's the other new features I'm looking forward to hearing about, like the camera etc...

Posted by whentheleveebreaks
The phone probably wont change at all apart from being 3G.

Posted by masseur
which would be a bit sad 1 year after initial launch, you would hope they would have progressed since then

^^

THIS.

Posted by SE-Naz
Does anyone have any ideas of the specs...???

And the likely size would be released...???

Cheers
ENJOY

Posted by shanespencer
No one will know the specs for sure until Apple officially announce it. There are plenty of rumours though!

Posted by masseur
such as? (with links please)

Posted by shanespencer
Would have posted this quicker, but the bloody site logged me out again!

Anyway, here's a link to a rumour:

Posted by masseur
thanks! I knew I'd seen it somewhere but couldn't find it

Posted by shanespencer
Yeah, I struggled to find it again, too

So, what are the chances of copy & paste appearing on the iphone anytime soon? Reckon the new one will have it?

Posted by leerichards
Yeah, you'd have to hope there is more to the new device than simply 3G. For me personally, I'd simply like a better camera. Away from specs, I hope that the UK retailers offer a wider choice of tarrifs, but I'm not sure there is much chance of that happening. Of course they are avoidable with all the hacks that are out there. I hadn't actually realised you could go into an 02 shop and take away the unit without signing up to one of their horrendous 18 month 'deals'.

I'm expecting to upgrade in the next few months to the G900, but I'm hoping the next iPhone is announced before that so I can make a more informed decision.

Times Online is reporting that the next-gen 3G iPhone will surprise Apple fans with a "radically different" appearance to the current offering.

According to a business article on the site: "Industry sources told Times Online that the device will have a 'radically different' appearance to the current device, which has a 4.5-inch [sic] screen and slick, aluminium backing".

"Among the possibilities are flip version, which would enable the screen to be larger, and a sliding model with a regular Qwerty keyboard - as opposed to a touchscreen one."

The article also states Apple has placed an order with its Asian suppliers to produce 200,000 of the new 3G iPhones by the end of May, rising to 2 million in June.

The 3G version of Apple's mobile phone is due in 2008, with June, which would mark the year anniversary of the device's launch, hotly tipped to be the month it debuts.

A little bit of info coming from the Czech Rpublic. Czech carriers (especially t-mobile) claim the reason why they haven't started selling the iphone is it's low sales in Europe. But they do confirm a 3g iphone "attractive to the european user" with a new design.
BTW- t-mobile is supposed to start selling the iphone (didn't say what version- but just read between the lines in the above paragraph!) in june/july.

Posted by Bonovox
You would think for the price they would put 3G along with at least a 3.2 mega pixel camera. Or perhaps Apple have not got a clue how to make a decent camera or what consumers want.

Posted by mswallis
What a completely ignorant comment!

Posted by masseur
engadget has come up with a little more info on the next iphone

apparantly it will have GPS, the back is now all black but still no changeable battery

Posted by iksplusipsilon
...it looks like that picture of black glossy back on Engadget is actually aftermarket casing for iPhone...as I understood, only things that are certain are 3G and 3,5 mm jack that is flush with the body :-)

This message was posted from a WAP device

Posted by masseur
yeah, that picture on engadget was proven to be a fake a couple of weeks ago, but apparantly its still being used around the discussions to show what a black back might look light

Hmmm... I don't see the video call camera. It would be stupid to make the iPhone 3G without a video call camera. But the look of the phone looks promising, I think it looks better than the old one.

From my sources, the phone could not only feature in black colour, but also in red [similar to iPod nano red] and egg white.

Posted by karlosperu
according to other rumors would have up to 3 versions of iphone even one with keyboard

Posted by Daedalus85
I can completely confirm that O2 (and therefore CPW I assume) have officially run out of stock in their warehouse for the 8GB iPhone, so the very very few left in stores at the moment is all thats left.

In East Anglia there are next to none left, if any, by the way.

Posted by intelegent115
I am looking forward to this 3G version.. but i really do hope they dont change the design. Current iPhone looks perfect.. why ruin it?

Posted by SloopJohnB
Lets hope these leaked picts are fake... it looks kinda cheap and too “simple“ somehow compared to the old iphone. It could be a prototype or something. I“ve read once on an article at wired.com that apple had to completely redesign the iphone with only a couple of months ahead of launch and thats because Steve Jobs looked at what they had at the time and said: 'I“m not gonna “fall in love“ with it' , so because of that the entire design team had to drop almost 1 year of hard work and start over. Considering this aspect of apple“s dna even if one leaked the next iphone, apple could just change the whole thing at request of Mr. Jobso.

Looks like we are on common ground with this one, my source with three colours, urs with three different versions.

I'm not too sure about the keyboard as Apple is known to like "simplicity" and "flexibility" Steve Jobs mentioned earlier that he doesn't believe a keyboard or keypad offers this. But you never know...

Austria first with 3g iphone? derStandard via engadget

babelfish translation:

T-mobile confirms UMTS iPhone: Austria test market mobile radio operator expects with 3G-Version the break-through - Austria one of the first countries - new tariff model announced in the context of a press conference in Vienna confirmed t-mobile Austria that the UMTS version of the iPhones will be available already soon. More still, Austria own itself as it were than test field for Apples 3G-Auftritt, like for each UMTS telephone. Therefore Austria presumably as one of the first countries world-wide the new UMTS iPhone one get.

Further it was called it on the part of the marketing boss Hendrik Kasteel, "more flexible" offers will give. T-mobile did not want to call sales figures to the current IP hone model, which one drives out since March of the yearly exclusively for the domestic market. But one expects with the 3G-Variante the break-through.

Spreading According to t-mobile about 18,000 Apple-mobile phone in the nets of domestic mobile radio operators circulate since the introduction on the market. How many devices unlocked of it are, one did not want to betray. Straight one in Europe takes time the success of the iPhones still. As reports, the customers before the exclusive contracts straeuben themselves and wait for a 3G-Version of the Internet-mobile phone.

Production is to already start after current medium reports. From the surrounding field of the chip manufacturer Infineon was called it, production still in this quarter would start. Market watchers count on the presentation of the new model in the course of the Worldwide Developers Conference from 9 to 13 June in San Francisco and an introduction on the market in the autumn. Meanwhile one assumes also up to three new models will come for different target groups on the market (zw/sum)

It may appear that the 3G iPhone is near as O2 have officially stopped selling all iPhones. One can only assume it is to make way for the 3G version.

Posted by haynesycop
Woohoo, cannot wait for it, my iPhone is not in great shape looking forward to getting this, cannot be doing with 8GB anymore. 32GB would be sweet could fit everything on there then. I wonder what will happen to the o2 tariffs, whether they'll stay the same? I'm not big on 3G but i presume your voice minutes can be used for it, not that i know anybody with it to call.

Posted by Dogmann
Hi all,

I know this is talking about the 3G iPhone but i haven't noticed HSDPA being mentioned at all anywhere, have i missed it?

As otherwise unless there really are some of the design changes mentioned i fail to see the big deal of it being 3G. As this only means a roughly 100kbps speed improvement. as opposed to the massive difference HSDPA would bring.

They still have the 16Gb model in stock.

Posted by masseur
no, I've not seen anyone mentioning HSDPA specifically but then any specs mentioned so far seem to be largely speculative anyway

my assumption when referring to 'iphone 3g' has always been that it would have high speed data as otherwise, in my opinion, they are shooting themselves in the foot

Posted by Dogmann
Hi Masseur,

That's very much my feeling to but thought I'd better ask in case i had some how missed something. Really i am expecting it to cover both European and US UMTS/HSDPA as there is no reason that shouldn't be possible now.

AT&T now showing "iPhone Black" model in device listing (AppleInsider)

Could Steve Jobs launch the iPlay in June?
An Apple-flavoured handheld games device to see WWDC debut?
The web is alive with rumours that Steve Jobs is going to stand before the world and deliver the much anticipated 3G iPhone on 9 June.

But what if there's something even more exciting unveiled? What if it is Apple's first real foray into the mobile gaming market that Jobs actually holds up to the amazed gasps of the globe's press?

Cue rumours of the "iPlay", a handheld gaming console that builds on the capabilities of both the iPod and iPhone.

The rumours stem from MacRumours' interpretation of website Switch To A Mac's prediction last month that Apple will announce the 3G iPhone in May, and Jobs will show off a completely different mobile device at June's Worldwide Developers Conference.

Could this be an Apple-flavoured handheld console to take on the likes of the PlayStation Portable and Nintendo DS Lite?

Apple has the name, it will just need a brilliant design and fantastic third party apps, and where better to get people on board than the 2008 world wide developers conference, where the aforementioned keynote will be given?
