Have you tried a Video Call?

The network took a revelation in past year or so and we have introduced the notion of video calling, but do we really use it?
I tired it for the first time from my P990i on the orange network where I get an allowance of 30min and it's great, except the audio lag but the whole idea was a real thrill to me. I would like to know how everyone else felt about it... have you tired a video call before? Do you even have a 3G video calling phone?

Good Evening.

Yep been using Video Calling for the last 2 years or so.

I used to be on Orange and the only problems i would find is that yes there is a lag on voice to the pictures and it didnt matter what network i contacted. it was the same.

Im now on o2 and get free video calling as it comes out of my 3000min allowence.
ok 3g network on o2 is no where near as massive as orange, but what i can confirm is that there is no lag. the video and voice are in real time.

I have called people on 3, t-mobile, o2 and voda and no lag. I call my friends on Orange and the lag comes back, so its a orange thing

But yes i do like the feature and do use it when ever i can. Im of on my hols soon an i know there is 3g coverage where im going and currenlty o2 does allow 3g from this country so i will video call home. And whats even better i only have to pay the normal standard network cost when abroad so im even happier

Hope this helps. anything else just ask

thanks for a great reply! Perhaps I'll investigate more into the lag, unfortunately I've yet another 17months to go before I can upgrade or migrate to different network.

Someone video called me the other day,
the quality was crap couldn't see the person on the other line lol

have 0range and 02 got a big dispute on or something

I tried it when I still had my K600/K608i/K618i/N70 back then . . . yes, the VIDEO lags, specially when the person on the other side is moving - sideways or is - dancing . . .

Never. UMTS is a waste of $$$ and battery.

@alex - At my end, the cost of a LIVE-call is just the same with that of a video-call, so why make a CALL when you can call your friend - JACK (in video)

Posted by Alexandra
Not on Vodafone Prepay.
If it was the same, of course I'd be doing it

Posted by Alexandra
By the way, my friend Jack has a K800i too!

I can't seem to get mine workiing, I just get the message 'video calling unavailable. I have checked with t-mo and it has been set up and the 3G signal is strong too.

Strange.

according to 02 video calling is the same price as
calling normally is this correct !

it works but the other person on the other end is very vaguely there on my phone screen again another issue with 02 & 0range lol

Hi all,

I have never used video calling and doubt i ever will, the only reason i can see for this to be of any use is parents away from home that want to say hello or goodnight to there children other wise i think it is completely and utterly pointless. but if you like it and it works for you fair enough just not of any interest to me.

Marc

I've used VC a few times, to show car parts etc.....and a certain prototype phone...... ......and received a few from people who had used all their voice minutes.....

However, it's far from what you see in sci-fi films, the frame speed/resolution/syncing is still primitive, 2 years on!

I agree!

Its about tiime they stepped up the quality of the front camera what with HSDPA speeds increasing now.

I agree too. I think the V800/Z800 was the best for video calling as it used a 1.3 MP camera not a VGA. It's about time the front cameras became 20-30 fps.

I love video calling, I use it whenever I can but ironically, in NZ, video calling is expensive for account holders but cheap for Prepay...

I tried videocall to my home country Estonia when I was in Japan. First it did not worked because of my home operator settings. Then operator changed something and I made some videocalls.

I can tell you if you are on Contract with o2 then you are not charged for video callin unil 01.01.08. The video calling mins are part of you inclusive allowence.

So for instance if you have a contract like i do with 3200 mins, currenlty i can use all 3200 mins on video calling and wont be charged a penny

If you are on PAYG with O2 then its 50p per min.

People who hasnt used video calling. go on give it ago. Its strange at first, but its great.

I use it when ever i can

my wife and i use to be on 3 and used video calling quite often when i worked away i never had any problems with video calling at all on that network.

. . . . oh this is GREAT ! I thought the video-calls are allowed ONLY-locally I mean, not from country-to-country . . .

does anyone know if this feature is available on any network in US? I'm on TMobile and they never advertise or write anything about video call (on website/manual/in person). I'd really like to try one if possible. should be better quality than using an instant messenger on the computer?

once,it never worked ever since...lol,called my sister while we were both in the same house...

i tried video call in sofia, and im very happy with this function on my phone:)

As Dogmann says if you have kids it can be usefull, used it now and again, as with ALL features, i would rather have it and NOT use it, than not have it at all and be bereft of having the option.

i called threex first time almost 2 years ago, i was in austria and he in sweden. video calls depends on the ops, if they support it or not. if yes, i could call u too

I tried it once when I was on vacation in Germany, and I really liked it. I can't see it being something I will use very often, but it is definitely cool. Maybe someday we will get it working properly in USA .

I rarely use Video calling but when i exprienced a bit of a problem with it.

I called my boy-friend who is on Orange and has the K810i as well. After 3 seconds it went to a Orange video voicemail messaging service and the phone seemed to freeze with an hour glass on the callers window but my video feed was ok. I had a option to leave a message using the # key or end the call which wasn't responding either so the only way reset it is take the battery out and in again. I tried 3 times and it did the same. When my boy-friend video called me it worked ok.

I tried again and rang my boy-friend and then transfered it to a video call and it worked. After that i tried using it though the menu and it worked ok.
I also seem to get disconnected or when ends and i try calling back again the same problem appears.

I phoned Orange and reported the problem to them and they told me they will pass it onto thier techinical team. They told me the handset may need to be returned if there is a fault. I think it it got to do with Orange's the 3G network rather than my phone.

So as you can now see my Video calling seems to be bit tempermental at the moment so i don't tend to use it.
