The defective handset was videoed on a cameraphone by handset reseller, Advanced Mobile. The store reported the incident to Mobile magazine, which promptly informed Nokia.

The publication "Mobile magazine" reports that Nokia is thoroughly investigating the issue, particularly with regard to the origin of both the battery and the charger. Mobile has published the smoking video on its web site.

David Crayford,a cab driver from Gloucester and a 3 customer, said his new 3G phone started overheating and 'fizzing white smoke' hours after switching it on for the first time.

The last moments of smoke coming out of the phone were captured on a mobile phone video in the store. source:mobiletoday theinquirer

Actually it is surprising this does not happen more often.

After all, no process is 100% accurate and even if Nokia were 99.999999% accurate in their "stringent testing" (i.e. 1 in a million) they produce close to 1 million phones a day.

So in theory, somewhere in the world, a Nokia phone should explode every day :-).

I witnessed a similar incident at a mall here in Manila. While the guard wasn't using a 6280, she was using a 3310, we were jolted when her phone exploded--while she was having a conversation! It's a good thing she wasn't blinded or anything. But her uniform was covered in soot and she was clearly stunned by what happened.

Shame, shame Nokia.
