A mobile phone peripheral that makes you feel good

Seoul-based DreamFree has developed a digital technology that permits the control of brainwave frequency patterns to intentionally induce altered states of awareness.Available as a plug-in accessory for PDAs and Smartphones

The company's PEEG technology involves software running on the smartphone plus a headset which pulses light and sound to the wearer. The software is also available on the Korean-only LG Aladdin mobile phone. There's also a stand-alone unit (pictured).

DreamFree is an interesting company, which was founded in 2000 by members of Korean Mensa. Mensa is a society which is non-political and free from all racial or religious distinctions with a membership whose IQ is in the top 2% of the population (about 158). Mensa has three stated purposes: to identify and foster human intelligence for the benefit of humanity, to encourage research in the nature, characteristics and uses of intelligence, and to promote stimulating intellectual and social opportunities for its members.

It's not a new technique for creating altered states - the rhythmic chants and mantras of many religious rituals and meditation practices  have been achieving similar results for thousands of years.

There are numerous technologies under development around the world which synthesise and send rhythms to the brain via a combination of pulsing light, electrical stimulation and sound, to induce relaxed, meditative, and creative states and to assist in falling asleep. There are also commercially available PDA and computer peripherals for monitoring brainwave patterns in real time available, machines which can measure the effectiveness of the EEGFREE and give the wearer a constant feedback and tracking of their state of mind.

Many of these new technologies, including the PEEG technology, offer similar overall benefits to health and state of mind as chanting and meditation inducing spiritual well-being, vivid dreams , deep relaxation, enhanced creativity, accelerated learning, better memory and higher endorphin levels.

The idea is that by playing certain rhythms certain brain wave patterns can be induced and the desired state of mind can be achieved.

Delta (1 to 4 Hz) wave frequency ranges are associated with deep sleep, and some frequencies in this range are reported to be very beneficial for healing and regeneration.

Theta waves ( 4 to 7 Hz) are associated with meditation or the fleeting state we encounter going to sleep or waking up where conceptual and creative capacities are enhanced.

It's also possible to induce other states of awareness, such as increased concentration and heightened alertness using alpha (8 to 12 Hz) and beta frequencies (13 to 40 Hz).
