Hi - I'm being very cautious here, but if I change my product code, THEN do a phone back up to card, update my firmware to generic, will restoring from card still brick the phone??
Also, how risky is the update process? I'm worried about the reports of people (who all seem to know more than I do) killing their phones.
Alternatively, as I can get VOIP via fring with my existing voda firmware, pehaps it's worth just waiting for the voda firmware to be available? My main problem with existing firmware is unreliable WLAN connection to my Netgear router.
What do you all think? |

No, you cannot use a backup from a previous firmware.
I'll make this as simple as possible.
Product Code.
All this does is allow the nokia update service to identify the software that is to be loaded onto the phone. If you have a vodafone branded N95 and leave it as delivered the product code is 0547869. When you connect to NUS, the NUS reads this code and it then updates the phone with the correct firmware.
Now the nss software allows the user to alter the product code to another, for example 0536062, the N95 Euro 1 generic version.
So if you change the code using nss, the next time you connect to NUS, it reads this code, and loads the firmware for that product code.
Thats basically all the product code does.
Now if you have a vodafone N95, and change the product code to Euro 1 using nss, nothing has changed except the product code. The phone is still a Vodafone N95. This only changes when you actuall connect it to NUS and update the phone.
So if you have a vodafone N95, and change the product code, and then create a back up, the back up is still a vodafone N95 firmware backup.
So if you are changing from one firware product code version to another, you CANNOT use the older back up.
If you change from a vodafone N95 to a Euro 1N95, you need to add your contacts, and programs manually again.
If you happen to be silly and do use an old backup from the vodafone N95, the phone will not start, and it will tell you, "phone failed to start. Please contact Supplier"
You can get back from this though by performing a hard reset. This process removes all the back ups and reverts the firmware to as if it had just been flashed.
To do this, do the following
Turn OFF the phone.
Hold the following buttons together
Green answer button
* Key
3 key
whilst holding them, press the power on button, and keep holding the other 3 buttons together.
The phone will reset and restart after about 20 seconds.

its written on the label on the box. (from memory) its a 7 digit code and it says product id or something similar next to it

@ David floatlite,
Thank you for being so clear and patient with a symbian newbe. I will give it a go following your advice next time I am near a PC (only got mac OS10.3.9 at home).

Just as a back up to what floatlite said, my voda n95 crashed, I did exactly as he advises and all is well,

This thread has a good step by step guide of how to do it and where to get the software. Just be sure to use N95 product codes rather than those for N70 shown there

Is there anyway i can backup and restore my SMS Messages?
this is quite important for me.
If not, i guess i'll have to wait for Vodafone to release an updated firmware for the N95 and then use the PC Suite for the Backup and Restore.

Save the SMS onto your memory card
First go into Messaging, then press OPTIONS, then scroll down to SETTINGS, then scroll down to OTHER and change the "Memory in Use" to memory card.
This will save all your meassges onto the memory card, and the memory card is not touched by updates

Thanks
Will this move across all the SMS's on the phone to the Memory Card or only new ones?
I also have some apps ie WorldMate, Weather, TomTom and the media files which are installed on the Memory Card. What shall i do with these as the firmware will be different?
