I can really see why scouring of the Shire was cut now as everyone complains about the end being too long as it is.

You should see Peter Jackson's first few movies, Bad Taste and Meet the Feebles, they're great, he's come a long way though, you can see they're done on a smaller budget. He's doing a remake of King Kong next. Oh yeah and how about all that great scenery in the LOTR movies. I heard the trilogy is going to be released in one big set of DVD's, with about 25 hours of viewing. |

Does anyone have any news on the extended DVD yet? I've heard rumours about it being 4 hours 15 minutes long and that it'll include Gandalf confronting Saruman at Orthanc and scenes from the Houses of Healing.

As I said some posts ago. The miniature Orhtanc model that was supposed to be at the Lord Of The Rings exhebition in january, was "Being used in filming The Return Of The King".

Two chapters that we know will be included in the extended edition are The Voice of Saruman and In The Houses of Healing. Pictures from the HoH were some of the first to be leaked online showing Aragorn with Éowyn. Another part that you probably have seen bits of that didn't make it into the theater cut was Gandalf's confrontation with the Morgul-king. The main trailer shows a shot of the fell beast landing in front of Gandalf and Pippin on Shadowfax.

Andy Serkis was on Conan last night. His screen test for Gollum is an extra on the Two Towers EE DVD and it's really creepy/interesting.

yes it did, but resolving the characters in a film and a novel are two entirely different propositions. the film in this case tried to do a "book" ending which didn't quite work because it was too long. i think it needed to be a bit tighter, rather than the episodic nature of the last half-hour. the whole faramir-eowyn story was omitted so why did we have to see bilbo's journey across the sea? admittedly he's fairly important in the novels but not so prominent in the films, especially for those who aren't familiar with The Hobbit. there were five logical end points to the film in the last half-hour, if you count the deliberate "fool the audience" one. any of them would have made a satisfying film ending (although i like the symmetry of returning to the shire). i just think the characters could have been resolved with a little more polish.
just my 2c.

I wish that in the extended DVD they'd go back to how the Ring is destroyed in the book, rather than the pointless bit with Frodo falling off the cliff too in the film.
Can't see it though somehow.

The Grey Havens scene was more to resolve Frodo and Gandalf than for Bilbo.
I wish that in the extended DVD they'd go back to how the Ring is destroyed in the book, rather than the pointless bit with Frodo falling off the cliff too in the film.
I totally agree. One of my biggest issues with the film is how the Ring gets to the fire. Frodo basicly pushes Gollum off the edge, which changes everything, taking away a lot from the character of Gollum.

maybe so, but i don't think it was handled that well. it seemed, purely from a film narrative perspective (i.e. forgetting the books for a moment), almost as if frodo was tacked on as an afterthought. just because something works in a novel doesn't mean it will translate so well into film. IMHO this scene falls into that category. frodo finishing the story would have been a fair resolution, and the symmetry with bilbo in the first film was nice. i think the disparity in narrative pace between the last half-hour and the rest of the film was the main issue though, rather than the content. i will say however, that on a second viewing the ending works a lot better - probably because you know what to expect rather than the continual "oh, it's over....no it's not" every six minutes.

Thanks snap-hiss and gelfen for agreeing with my sentiments 
Although I think Peter Jackson has done a far better job with the films than anyone could've wished for, he does seem to have a strange liking for people falling off cliffs
