are you running 32 bit or 64 bit ubuntu?

edit: someone on UF seems to have a solution

Open volume control (double click on the speaker icon in the upper right corner of the screen)
In volume control make sure that in File -> Change device the "HDA Intel (alsa mixer)" is selected.
Go to Edit -> Preferences and select all tracks in the list.
Unmute and increase volume on "PCM", "Surround", "Center", "Side" and "LFE". Sound should work nicely now. Optionally mute the micophone sliders.

@paul every time i install an application, it asks for password to perform administrative tasks. I have to enter the password each and every time.

Can i stop this(the password asking thing)?

and if i insert headphones/my 2.1 Logitech Speakers it still plays the sound through Laptop, though this is not the case in Vista

and also the frames while playing any video files, frames move slower and the picture is blurred in Ubuntu, both in its default movie player and VLC Media Player for Ubuntu
i have nvidia 8600M GT dedicated graphics card still why so mediocre?
i have never faced problems while playing video files in Vista with any of the players(be it VLC)

what could be the reason?
how can Ubuntu recognise my graphics card?
can it be solved??

what is this?
any solution?

* Go to System > Administration > Restricted Drivers Manager and turn on the driver.

* Reboot

* Some users may receive an error screen: "The software source for the packsge nvidia-glx-new is not enabled." This can be overcome by going to System > Administration > Software Sources and ticking all the boxes under the heading "Downloadable from the Internet", click close and then allow Ubuntu to reload the package lists. The NVidia drivers can then be enabled using the method above.

@paul rofl the sound is playing on both now.
If i insert headphones it plays sound on both headphones and my laptop. Same happens with 2.1 speakers. It doesnt happen in vista though.

I was browsing internet in college via wifi, i inserted headphones and played music and noticed that suddenly all people were staring at me. I paused and removed the headphones from my ears and played the music again and then came to know lol
Went home, tried with my Logitech 2.1 speakers, same thing happens...

Edit: found a temporary solution.
If i mute the surround option in volume control it plays only through output device(speakers, headphones) but not the laptop speakers.
If i unmute the surround option the sound can be heard from both laptop speakers as well as input device.

you can submit a bug report to launchpad, and a crack team of monkeys will attempt to fix your problem (may take a while, or even never be solved)

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu

edit: i'm getting the same laptop as you in the next week (only without the gfx card)
