i love to add something to this discussion as a big Ubuntu Supporter.
Its easier to install/uninstall applications in Ubuntu than Windows. u just need to use the Add/Remove Applications.
'Applications - Add/Remove Applications'. Then u need to select the source as All Application (currently am at work, so cant remember the exact words, one day i will install Ubuntu on my work system ).
Type the name of the application in the search field. Select the apps you wish to install, apply. Done.
if your app is not in the list, search it on google, and find the respiratory of that app, and add that respiratory in the Software Sources of your Package Manager. ( Administrator tools -> Software Source -> Third Party -> Add)
P.S: will update this post later.

tbh, you dont really need to compile your own source, you can stick with .deb's (files that end with .deb are the easiest to install... just click on them and then click "install", simple)
as for the sound problem, does your pc have a sound card?

hmmm, since there is only one sound card listed, i'm assuming that it is your motherboard (ok, i know 100% that it is your motherboard sound card)
are you able to connect the speakers to your in-built motherboard sound card?
and if you get the make and model of your sound card, i may be able to find some drivers for it
