there is an article here from The Herald Sun, a major Melbourne newspaper, about a 17 year old boy who racked up a AU$250 monthly bill in text messages alone (at about $0.25 a shot, that's 1000 messages).
a related article here discusses the contribution of mobile phones to soaring levels of "underage" debt, as well as the willingness of banks to give young people credit cards without the financial means to support them. here is an extract of the relevant section:
Compiled by La Trobe (University) law students and overseen by lecturer Liz Curran, the report found young people spent beyond their means for a sense of self worth and social acceptance.
Mobile phone companies were the worst offenders with SMS the strongest weapon in the debt trap, it said.
Companies refuse to set limits on bills but they snap up $100 million from SMS clients every month.
More than 72 per cent of 14 to 24-year-olds have a mobile phone.
The phone fad is also becoming a favoured marketing tool and revenue raiser for TV networks through shows such as Big Brother and Australian Idol.
Voters on the hit shows pay a premium rate of 55 cents an SMS to vote for their favourite contestants, preying on young people's love of the convenient and inexpensive service, the report said.
Australian Idol is believed to have attracted more than 900,000 SMS votes in one week, the money split between the producers and the mobile phone companies....
...Mobile phone companies are joining with credit card companies to enable payments for almost every good and service possible with mobile phones.
In Melbourne parking meter trials, 70 per cent chose the option despite paying 50 cents extra. Users get "bill shock" at the end of the month when they realise the small extra charges add up.

Yeah.... this is one great problem that I think does not get enough attention... how youth have the greatest debts because of phones and services

according to this latest BBC article, March was another record month for sending texts in UK with 2.1 billion texts being sent, up 25% from March 2003. Thats 69 million texts every day!
The mobile phone companies must be laughing all the way to the bank!

I wonder how many texts are sent by other countries?
I often wonder how many are sent in the US, as there isn't really any mention of texting in programmes/films from the US. Does anyone know how many the US sends, if any at all? Has it not caught on over the pond? Do Americans use something other than texting?
