It seems Britain is still text message mad, with 2003 becoming yet another record year for mobile messaging.
A massive 20.5 billion SMS messages were sent over the four main mobile networks, said the Mobile Data Association, with 1.9 billion sent in December alone.
That compared with 16.8 billion the previous year, said the MDA.
Every year since records began in 1999, the volume of SMS messages has boomed as mobile ownership has grown.
Texting trends
With mobile operators and companies offering easier to use phones, colourful screens and speedier services, the texting trend is expected to continue into the next year, said Mike Short, Mobile Data Association (MDA) chairman.
The MDA has predicted that about 23 billion text messages will be fired off in 2004.
"With significant choice and competition in messaging services, the use of text is also evolving into picture messaging, Wap and instant messaging as people explore full range of mobile messaging services available to them," said Mr Short.
The figures for 2003 mean, on average, 55 million messages a day were sent, with New Year's Day 2003 the biggest day for SMS.
Other top texting days included 22 November, the day England won the rugby World Cup, when 76 million messages made their way through the networks.

Valentines Day 2003: 78 million sent, six times more than traditional cards

17 March 2003: 65.7 million sent on St Patrick's Day
May 2003: 65 million sent on last day of Premiership

My second simcard in my P900 is an Orange just talk sim, it has the original "Out here" package on it (5 free texts a day for life,no topup is needed for this, its COMPLETELY free every day, this sim is not used for calls so i never top it up,it saves me around £220 per year) so i send at least 5 SMS every single day but i think i am a light user.

I have been known to send 30 texts a day  but I must say have calmed down a bit. My bill made me come to my senses

very nice
you'd think they would lessen the price of texts after seeing this many people texting, does anyone know how much it costs the operator when you send a text ( if its anythin at all) |

I hardly use txt messaging. Mostly use mms . Maybe coz it is free...;-)

There is no actual cost involved per se. Sure they had to purchase the SMSC and the network costs, but SMS are sent without a call set up and are sent in the signaling channel so in effect they tend to be free to the operator. In many countries, SMS drive the ARPU, not voice or data. |

By the way, I send normally anywhere between 750 and 1000 SMS a month. They are getting their money from me, but I live in Germany, and the pricing structure is not that bad. the first 100 cost x amount but then falls way off after the 101st SMS. |

@masseur - is the stats in UK alone ? As far as I know, and even majority of the Filipino members here at Esato would attest that, still, it is the Philippines, that is considered as the the text (sms) capital of the world. But if the news came from BBC, I guess I just have to live with it, unless, CNN came up with it's own - and consider Manila then. |

The stats are about UK alone, not comparinf t to any other country butjust giving out numbers. I believe they do so every 6 months or erhaps even quarterly, I've seen it before.
