iPhone 7 Plus: Camera for the Apple flagship may be sourced from LG as Sony's production lags behind
By Agamoni Ghosh
May 21, 2016 12:14 BST

The iPhone 7 Plus speculated to be released towards the beginning of 2017 may source its dual-lens camera modules from LG and not Sony as earlier thought. Sony which has traditionally supplied camera sensors for iPhones is reportedly lagging behind in production thus forcing Apple to choose LG.

Chris Chang of Nomura Securities issued a note to investors recently claiming that Sony which is the leading camera module assembler for smartphones is in fact running behind schedule in terms of supplying Apple with dual-lens camera modules for the 2017 iPhone. As a result, the iPhone maker may go ahead with Korea's LG Innotek which competes with Japan's Sony as a camera module assembler.

"We think Sony may not be able to deliver its full share of dual cameras to Apple due to mainly because (1) lower-than-expected yield, and (2) damage to its production facility from the April earthquake in Kumamoto. As a result, we think LGI will gain majority share of the initial dual camera orders from Apple," he says in his note.

iPhone rumours and device renders hint towards a dual-lens camera module both for the iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus. In fact, Nomura Securities and Citi Research, two leading market research firms on the subject, believe all 5.5-inch iPhones from now on will be equipped with dual-lens camera modules. KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo and reliable iPhone specs predictor had also reiterated the same. Apart from this, Nomura believes that all future iPhones will come with optical image stabilisation (OIS) which is already present on the iPhone 6 Plus and iPhone 6s Plus.

Earlier speculation by Kuo had also hinted at Apple switching from aluminium to glass for its 2017 iPhone which most believe will be the iPhone 7 Plus. Future iPhones are also said to have the headphone jack removed in order to go wireless hinting at an all-new design for the smartphone.

Everything we wanted to know about the iPhone 7 might have just leaked

Chris Smith
June 1, 2016

Android may be the king of smartphones when it comes to market share, but the iPhone is still the most talked-about device. Year after year, chatter about the upcoming iPhone model increases in the months leading to its release, with leaks and rumors offering fans plenty of details about the next Apple phone.

The iPhone 7 is no different. Several reports have already cemented the idea that the phone will be remarkably similar to last year’s iPhone 6s — in fact, this is probably the first photo of a real iPhone 7, so you can already see what the phone will look like. We also have an idea of what the next iPhone family will have to offer, but now a fresh report seemingly lists all of the key specs for the upcoming iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus.

According to market research firm TrendForce, Apple has settled on most of the specs for the next-gen iPhone. The iPhone 7 models will both have LCD displays that “will not feature a significant breakthrough.”

When it comes to internal components, the research firm says the iPhone 7 will make use of speedy LPDDR4 RAM, just like the iPhone 6s. However, not all iPhone 7 models will be equal. The 5.5-inch iPhone 7 Plus will have 3GB of RAM while the 4.7-inch device will still with 2GB of RAM. That’s exactly what recent reports have claimed.

The extra gigabyte of RAM is needed on the iPhone 7 phablet to power its dual-lens camera. The iPhone 7 Plus’ memory module will “be the first in the series to have 3GB of memory in the form of four stacked 6Gb mono-die modules,” TrendForce says.

Storage is one thing Apple will change in the upcoming iPhone 7. TrendForce believes that the 64GB option may be discontinued and replaced by the 128GB version, “though this decision has yet to be finalized.” The research company says that Apple “is certain” to make a 256GB iPhone 7 this year. The entry-level iPhones will ship with 32GB of storage, a recent report said, but TrendForce doesn’t mention anything about the lowest iPhone 7 storage tier.

Design-wise, the iPhone 7 is expected to be similar to last year’s model. Other than the dual lens camera on the iPhone 7 Plus, the research firm doesn’t mention any of the changes suggested in recent leaks, such as the rear antenna redesign or the lack of a headphone jack.

TrendForce expects Apple to order 216.5 million iPhones this year, an 8.2% drop compared to 2015.

Apple 7 and 7 Plus prototypes:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rPZeQI3nzj8

.... It seems to be confirmed, there will be no headphone jack, but there's rumors that a 'converter' jack (3.5mm to lightning?) might be included in the box.

Posted by XperiaJunkie
I think Apple will just supply headphones with a lightning connector in the box as standard, they'll probably charge £25 for the adapter just like when they made the jump from the old 30 pin to lightning and try to stop any unauthorised 3rd party accessories that do the same.

And at first everyone is going to despise that move but later, they will all iSheep again. Business as usual in the world of Apple. The good thing is that Bluetooth headsets are good today.
I am just waiting for Apple to remove that too and introduce some iBullShit to have the third parties to pay more fees.

Apple Leaks Reveal iPhone 7 Nasty Surprises

There is no headphone jack. By now the whole world knows Apple has made the controversial decision to axe the world’s most ubiquitous port from the new iPhone 7. But now users may not be getting the goodies they expected as compensation for this loss…

A pair of leaks this week make grim reading for potential iPhone 7 buyers as Apple appears set to cut back on two innovations widely expected this year.

Nasty Surprise #1: No Stereo Speakers

The first bad news comes via highly reliable French site Nowhereelse.fr which has attained schematics of the iPhone 7. The schematics say the matching second speaker grill on the bottom edge of the iPhone 7 (added thanks to the removal of the headphone jack) is purely cosmetic and simply houses the microphone.

Apple has pulled a similar stunt before with the iPhone 4S which also had matching dual speakers on the bottom edge (the headphone jack was at the top of the phone back then). Many predicted stereo sound at the time, only to be disappointed.

Nasty Surprise #2: No Touch Sensitive Home Button

With iPhone 7 innovations expected to be primarily internal (improved performance, bigger battery) and incremental (the dual camera is an iPhone 7 Plus / Pro only feature) there was one exception: the home button.

After nine years, the iPhone 7 appeared ready to move to a MacBook-inspired touch sensitive button which uses haptic feedback to simulate the sensation of physical touch. A fixed button would be more reliable, save physical space and potentially enable Apple to use the touch sensitivity to add gesture support at a later date (there’s no sign of this in iOS 10).

iPhone 7 chipset internals with standard home button space. Image credit: GeekBar

Unfortunately MacRumors reports a leaked chassis via Geekbar which it believes to be from the iPhone 7 shows the same cutouts for a physical home button, just like previous models.

What To Think?

Of course the obvious point to make is both leaks could be off the mark. In fact even if they are correct, Apple is known to make and test multiple iterations of each iPhone prior to settling on a design. So these could be prototype plans that have since been scrapped.

That said I would argue it is crucial Apple ‘sells’ the loss of the headphone jack as a gain overall by arguing it allows the iPhone 7 to take new, appealing steps forward. These include higher quality sound through the Lightning port, more space for a bigger battery, waterproofing and yes, stereo speakers and (in absence of a design overhaul) the compensation of an upgraded home button and internals.

If such features get chipped away, the loss of a headphone jack in conjunction with a third year of largely unchanged external design set against the backdrop of falling sales could spell trouble and imply stagnation. Yes, sales figures will still be on a scale of ‘trouble’ most smartphone makers would die for but it’s trouble nonetheless.

In recent years Apple product launches have had little to no surprises. With some of the negativity surrounding the iPhone 7 (especially against the excitement for 2017’s radical iPhone let’s hope Apple does have some surprises this year. Either way, we’ll all find out very soon…

I think there is more to what will NOT be in this iteration of the iPhone than no more headset jack. Certain providers are already on board (with a growing list) of having a USIM embedded ... allowing one single sim to be used on ALL carriers or for now multiple carriers 17 via the iPad Pro!

I have a feeling this works for Apple and providers cause they'll not have to continuously spend on a small chip, brand it, spend more for wasted plastic to hand out to a user when they switch carriers or change phones (SIM to MicroSIM to NanoSIM). This also allows a VERY DEEP sleep mode, unknown to the user and theif that micro data along with GPS is set out and triangulate a user (or say terrorist - take your pick) of their location to the "authorities".

32/128/256GB Storage.
Apple welcome to the leagues of the $1500 US retail smartphone club.
That's my estimate for the phone 7S Plus

My estimates on storage range/model:

iPhon 5SE: 8/16/32/64GB
16GB cheapest for India/China biggest retail opportunities and largest profits/units sold
64GB for those that still don't like the 4.7" screen size with huge bezel.

iPhone 6S: 32/64/128GB Continued
^ I have the 64GB just yesterday ... LOVE IT!

iPhone 7:
32/128/256GB
iPhone 7Plus:
32/128/256GB.

iPhone 6 cancelled as it too closely resembles the iPhone 6S lineup and Apple doesn't want to dilute developers efforts for implementing Force Touch.

So it appears that the new iphone will be water resistant, IPx7, no doubt to help it against the s7 and note and help it in the Japanese market where water resistance is sought after feature.

http://www.notebookcheck.net/[....]-the-next-iPhone.173372.0.html

Rumours has it there will be a 4 tone LED flash now and not 2 tone for improved colours. The absence of a 3.5mm jack would is a deal breaker for me, even with a lighting port adapter, assuming one ships in the box and apple doesn't force you to buy it. Or perhaps only pre-orders will ship with an adapter

I can see people losing the wireless headphones easily so no doubt apple will charge a ridiculous amount for a replacement pair. Will be interesting to see what apple do with the dual camera set up and if people will actually use it.

What I do like is the inclusion of a black colour option, it was always something missing in my mind but with the missing headphones jack, the colour is not enough to warrant move to ios.

In London the majority of young people who use iPhones have an expensive pair of Beats attached to it so I think loads of people would be really annoyed if it didn't have an adapter in the box.

Nonsense! All they need to do is probably turn on the bluetooth function on their super expensive pair of Beats. Unless they own a non-bluetooth version.

Apple iPhone 7 -6 SE: Ming-Chi Kuo leaked last minute information about the next iPhone
http://www.notebookcheck.net/[....]-the-next-iPhone.173372.0.html

Each iPhone 7 will come with a Lightning-to-3,5 mm-jack-adapter and Lightning earpods in the box. The earpiece on the upper front will become a second speaker, driven by a new power amplifier, that will improve sound quality and enable stereo audio. Also, iPhone 7 will improve on its waterproof abilities and be officially waterproof with an IPX7 rating, similar to the Apple Watch. That means you can put it under 1 meter of water for up to 30 minutes.

Both cameras on the back of the iPhone 7 Plus will be 12 MP lenses, one will be wide-angle, with larger pixels, a 6P-lens and integrated optical image stabilization (OIS). The second one will be a smaller pixel, 5P-telephoto lens. The dual-camera-system will allow for better zoom and "light field camera applications", enabling you to change focus after a shot was already made. Apple apparently also improved on the True Tone flash, adding two more LEDs for a total of 4 LEDs.

Anybody looking forward to the iPhone 6s+1 later today?

I understand that the majority of changes will come next year for the 10th anniversary but still, exactly the same design 3 years in a row except you can't use your own headphones.
