Apple may be waterproofing the next iPhone

Carl Woodfin March 7, 2015
iOS, iPhone, Mobile News

We’ve heard these rumours before about waterproofing but this time they come with a little weight.

Apple have applied for a new patent that allows the coating of components with a silicone based substance something called “hydrophobic coating.” From what I understand, it’s basically a way to coat everything on the interior of the device so that it expels the water.

Dropping your phone, breaking the screen. Letting it go swimming by mistake are the major causes of devices becoming used as book stops. The new patent offers protection against the latter. Yes, sure, you can get a case to protect it but adding the extra bulk isn’t for everyone. Hopefully soon we’ll have a LifeProof Nuud on an iPhone 6 Plus. Keep coming back to check and we’ll let you know how that goes.

With Sony and Motorola making a move to waterproof their devices, there’s no saying how far Apple will take this. The patent doesn’t specify any devices but the most likely would be the iPhone and Tim Cook has announced that the new Apple Watch will be wearable in the shower, could this be a start of the step towards waterproofing their products?

Another thing that’s just come to mind. I wonder if this could restrict repairability by stores? Apple devices are more modular now to make swapping components easier. Surely opening the devices would compromise the integrity of the coatings. As the patent doesn’t explain any of this, that’s a question for another day.

These may be the first details on Apple's next big iPhone update: iOS 9

Lisa Eadicicco
May 5, 2015, 10:25 PM

Every year at its Worldwide Developers Conference, Apple reveals the new software features it plans to bring to iPhones, iPads, and MacBooks.

This year's event, which takes place on June 8-12, will likely follow suit, but 9to5Mac's Mark Gurman claims to have already unearthed some details about what to expect from Apple's next big iPhone update. Gurman has a strong track record when it comes to reporting on upcoming Apple product announcements. Last year, he published screenshots of the new Health app long before iOS 8 was officially unveiled.

Based on his latest reports, here's what we expect to see in iOS 9:

Siri is going to get a redesign. Gurman says the new format will make Siri look more like the colorful version on the Apple Watch.

Expect new wallpapers and color themes, too. iOS 9 will come with a blue and green color scheme by default, according to the report.

There will be a big focus on security. That's not too surprising, given the iCloud fiasco that happened at the end of 2014. At the same time, Google has been really vocal about the security improvements it's been making to Android as well.

iOS 9 won't come with many new features, but it will be more stable and smooth. Gurman also reported in February that iOS 9 probably won't be a big visual change. Instead, Apple will emphasize overall improvements to stability and performance. Apple will also try to keep the size of the update manageable so that it's easier for users to actually install the update. When iOS 8 launched in October, some iPhone owners complained they couldn't install the update because it required too much free space.

We expect to know more next month, and the official update will likely roll out in the fall after the next iPhone is announced. In the meantime, Apple is supposedly readying an iOS 8.4 update that will bring a redesigned Music app to the iPhone.

Everything we think we know about the iPhone 6s

By Yoni Heisler
May 6, 2015 at 1:15 PM

With the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, Apple finally addressed a longstanding advantage Android handsets had over previous iPhone models — bigger screens. Coupled with Touch ID, Apple’s iPhone 6 lineup presented an incredible value proposition for consumers looking to upgrade their existing smartphones.

That being said, it remains to be seen how Apple plans to top what it accomplished with the iPhone 6, easily the company’s most successful iPhone launch ever. And with Apple now on the big display bandwagon, one wonders what type of features it plans to incorporate into its iPhone 6s models to entice users to upgrade.

While an official iPhone 6s unveiling is still likely months away, the rumor mill has been busy as ever, feeding us small pieces of interesting information about what we can expect to see in Apple’s next-gen iPhone.

Here’s what we know so far.

The camera might be insanely good

It’s no secret that Apple every year devotes a ton of engineering resources towards improving camera quality on the iPhone. With the iPhone 6s, Apple may take things even further. Back in November, in-the-know blogger John Gruber said on his podcast that the next iPhone camera “might be the biggest camera jump ever.” Specifically, Gruber heard that the next iPhone may feature “DSLR quality imagery.”

While such a bold and seemingly impossible claim is easy to dismiss, Gruber has a strong record with respect to Apple rumors. Adding even more credence to Gruber’s claim is the fact that Apple, just this past April, acquired an Israeli company called LinX with a portfolio of jaw dropping camera technology. LinX specifically boasts that its cameras are not only small, but are “leading the way to DSLR performance in slim handsets.”

What’s more, LinX’s camera technology allows for better color fidelity, decreased shutter lag, and more importantly, much better low light performance.

Finally, more RAM!

Apple is notoriously skimpy when it comes to RAM, but rumor has it that the next-gen iPhone models will finally incorporate 2GB of RAM. Current iPhone models sport 1GB of RAM, and while that’s all well and good, that extra gig should make the user experience that much snappier. Additionally, more RAM will also gives developers room to really push the envelope with their iOS apps.

Force Touch is coming to the iPhone

With the Apple Watch, Apple introduced a new feature called Force Touch. Force Touch, as the name implies, is a technology which can successfully distinguish between a user tapping on a display and a user pressing on a display with force. Naturally, Apple boasts that Force Touch is the “most significant new sensing capability since Multi-Touch.”

Apple incorporated Force Touch onto its new MacBook trackpad not too long ago, and there are not surprisingly a slew of reports claiming that the next-gen iPhones will also be graced with Force Touch technology. Force Touch on the iPhone might be beneficial to the extent that it opens up a wider array of controls and gesture commands across all types of apps. For instance, imagine being able to zoom in on a specific part of a photo by pressing harder on display. Gaming in particular would be an area with some extremely interesting applications of Force Touch controls.

Better Touch ID performance

Touch ID, introduced on the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, was one of those awesome features that made you wonder how you ever lived without it. Not only did it provide a more seamless way for users to access their devices, it also added a welcome layer of security by limiting access to authorized fingerprints only. What’s more, Touch ID helped pave the way for Apple Pay, Apple’s easy to use mobile payments solution.

But as great as Touch ID is, some users had problems getting their device to recognize their fingerprints. While Apple has improved Touch ID in some regards with software fixes, the next-gen iPhones will reportedly lend a helping hand as well. Noted analyst Ming Chi Kuo indicated earlier this year that Apple’s iPhone 6s models will include upgraded and more robust Touch ID sensors that will reduce the incidence of identification errors and, perhaps, speed up the Apple Pay process ever so slightly.

A pink iPhone? Ya don’t say.

With the iPhone 5s, Apple finally made its iconic smartphone available in more colors than ever before, a grand total of 3 to be exact. Apple kept up that tradition with the iPhone 6, offering the device in Space Grey, Silver, and Gold.

Looking ahead to the iPhone 6s, the Wall Street Journal reported not too long ago that pink may be introduced as a new color option.

There won’t be a new 4-inch iPhone 6s or 6c

The most recent rumblings from the rumor mill suggest that Apple will not be introducing a new 4-inch iPhone model. While we have seen a few reports pointing to an iPhone 6c or an iPhone 6s mini with a smaller display, it’s more likely that Apple will simply keep the iPhone 5s in the lineup as a free option for users who prefer a smaller form factor.

If this proves to be the case, don’t be surprised to see Apple release a completely new 4-inch iPhone model in 2016.

Hi there,

Well, the primary reason why I started this thread was because there was none.

Yes, there's a Sony rumors thread, but none regarding other phone brands. Do you mean to say that the other brands have no place here? That we should all just talk about what Sony is doing and not the other brands?

I had thought that Esato caters to ALL phone enthusiasts, and not just Sony. I realize that this was "originally Sony." In fact, back when I joined, it was mostly "Ericsson." I assumed that with the changing times, and Sony is not as prolific as it once was, this forum might be open to discussing other brands? I guess I was wrong.

To the MODs: Please lock this thread asap. Thank you.

It would be great if we had a decent rumour thread for every brand.
If we had, there would be less cross-brand-action in the 'original' rumours.

Esato started as a Sony Ericsson forum. When stopped we opened it for all brands. To keep esato alive.

Does Kuo Know? Analyst Tips 10 Key iPhone 7 Specs and Features

Michael Grothaus 11:13,
13 May 2015

Ming-Chi Kuo KNOWS Apple, so when he talks about the iPhone 7 –– or iPhone 6s –– you definitely want to take note...

KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, otherwise known as the most well-connected Apple analyst in the world, has issued a new note to investors about what he believes will be the hardware specs of the next iPhone. Before getting to those specs, it’s important to note that Kuo is more often right than wrong–making him a rare source of knowledge in the field of iPhone rumors. It doesn’t appear Kuo has any inside contacts at Apple feeding him tips, rather he has deep sources within Asia’s supply chain which allows him to predict with great certainty what future Apple products will be made of.

He’s done it with great accuracy many times before and is often referred to as the most switched on Apple analyst on the planet. Obviously, though, predicting something as secretive as the next iPhone is tricky and we’ve already heard plenty of theories about what Apple’s 2015 iPhone –– or iPhones –– will entail. Nevertheless, Kuo makes a compelling argument for his claims. His work inside Apple’s supply chain gives him access to protected contacts and information, which in turn are turned into reports about what investors should expect from Apple’s forthcoming iPhone.

There has been speculation that the next iPhone will be called the iPhone 7, yet the spec predictions by Kuo suggest that the next iPhone may not be different enough from the current 6 series to get a new numbering branding. Rather, it’s likely Apple is going to name the next iPhone the "iPhone 6s" and "iPhone 6s Plus”. So, what does Kuo know (or thinks he knows) about the next iPhone?

Force Touch Display

Kuo says “Force Touch will be the biggest upgraded selling point, but also one of the main bottlenecks of the supply chain. Force Touch can enhance user experience due to more input methods and support of handwritten signatures, which is beneficial for expanding in the commercial market.”

Force Touch is of course the driving input method on the Apple Watch. It allows the screen to detect how hard and long a touch is applied. This enables greater input methods. It seems like a given for the iPhone and opens up an entirely new array of input possibilities–which are much more useful on a bigger display than the one found on the Apple Watch.

No New Screen Sizes

Kuo says “Screen will remain at 4.7 and 5.5 inches, with resolution the same as existing models. There will be no new 4-inch model.”

No surprise here given Apple just introduced two new screen sizes last year. One thing that some people will find disappointing is Kuo says there won’t be a new 4-inch model, which while though small by today’s standards, some people still love.

Rose Gold Body

Kuo says “There will be an additional casing color, rose gold, matching the rose gold Apple Watch Edition.”

This is actually somewhat of a surprise considering we already have a gold iPhone. The key phrase in Kuo’s prediction is “color”, however. I find it hard to believe that Apple will make a rose gold iPhone that is made of actual gold. It would cost a fortune–or well over the Rose gold Apple Watch’s $17,000.

12MP Camera

Kuo says “The camera will have a pixel upgrade, likely to 12 MP.”

iPhone, welcome to 2013!! But seriously, we all know Apple has the camera tech to eek out the best pics even though it uses lower megapixel sensors, but a 12MP sensor addition is much welcome and long overdue. I for one would rather have built-in optical image stabilization across the line, though. Here’s hoping the next iPhone has that too.

More Microphones

Kuo says “One microphone will be added near the speaker to enhance voice quality.”

Not exactly groundbreaking, but nice nonetheless. Not only will this help with calls, it could signal Apple has bigger plans for Siri in iOS 9, as an extra mic would make it easier for Siri to accurately pick up what you are saying.

A9 PLUS More RAM!!!!!

Kuo says “The A9 processor with upgraded 2GB LPDDR4 will be adopted.”

A9? No shock. More RAM? About freaking time! Even though Kuo is predicting 2GB LPDDR4 RAM–double the iPhone’s current RAM, it’s still well behind most Android phones that have 3GB or more of RAM. Still, this will be a nice little boost that is going to make the next iPhone a monster powerhouse.

Bendgate Be GONE!

Kuo says “The bending issue will be improved by using different casing materials and internal mechanical design changes.”

Look, “bendgate” with the iPhone 6 was overblown. Though it got a crazy amount of media attention, hardly anyone’s iPhone actually bent. Regardless, it’s nice to hear Apple is taking any flaw, no matter how rare, seriously.

Sapphire Display

Kuo says “If drop test issues can be resolved, the 5.5-inch model will have a limited number of units with sapphire cover lens.”

This is an interesting assertion. First, Kuo clearly isn’t sure of this. Second, if he is right and Apple is going to add a sapphire covering lens to the iPhone 6s Plus it will further distinguish between the Plus and the regular model. Those 4.7-inch fans might feel like Apple is treating them as second class citizens–never a good thing. We shall see. Currently Apple does use sapphire on both iPhones via the Touch ID and camera lens coverings.

Better Touch ID

Kuo says “The recognition rate of Touch ID will be improved further in a bid to promote Apple Pay.”

This is good news for two reasons. First, the Touch ID is one of the best features on the iPhone. When it works, it’s flawless. The bad thing about it however is that if your hands are moist or have dust on them, the Touch ID won’t recognize your fingerprint. Anything that makes sure the Touch ID works all the time is a good thing in my book. The second reason this is exciting is because Apple Pay is awesome–it just needs bigger adoption. Apple wants to make it easier for people to use Apple Pay so an improve Touch ID experience makes sense.

Gesture Control Support

Kuo says “Gesture control support.” Very brief. So, what is gesture control support? It’s the ability to move the device in a gesture pattern to do something on the device itself. For example, a tilt gesture would allow you to tilt the iPhone to scroll through a web page without needing to touch the screen.

Everything Kuo is predicting sounds good in our book. Though he didn’t give a timeline for the next iPhone’s launch, he did say mass production of the device will start in mid-to-late August. That puts a late September launch (as usual) likely. Kuo also says Apple will ship 80-90 million iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus’ in 2015 with a 2:1 ratio of 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch models.

Next iPhone's camera may get a pixel boost, but there's a trade-off

An industry observer says Apple's upcoming iPhones will increase the pixel count from 8 pixels to 12. The pixels would be smaller, though, which could affect picture quality.

by Lance Whitney
May 15, 2015 11:12 AM PDT

This year's iPhones, most likely to be dubbed the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus, will raise the pixel count of the rear camera to 12 megapixels from the current 8, said Kevin Wong, chief executive at market intelligence firm IHS China. Wong made the claim Thursday via a post to Chinese social network Sina Weibo. If what he said is true, this would be the first time Apple has boosted the pixel count on its flagship phone's camera since it increased it from 5MP to 8MP with the debut of the iPhone 4S in 2011.

But that jump in pixel count could come at a price, according to Wong. To achieve the higher count, Apple would reduce the actual size of each pixel. And why might that be bad? Smaller pixels are less sensitive to light, which can lead to poorer-quality photos with more noise, especially those taken in low-light conditions. So there's a trade-off with a higher pixel count and a smaller pixel size.

The whole subject of pixel count has inspired much debate.

Certain Lumia smartphones have received kudos for their high-quality photos. The Lumia 808 and 1020 both come with a 41-megapixel camera. But does the pixel count account for the high quality, or are there other factors involved?

Apple's iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus use 8-megapixel cameras, but both of those phones have been cited for their high-quality photo-taking skills. Apple has in the past avoided the popular trend of constantly increasing the pixel count and has instead worked on other features to enhance the camera, such as improved autofocus and optical image stabilization on the 6 Plus. So even if Apple lowers the size of the pixels to achieve a greater pixel count, the company is likely to enhance the camera in other ways that would still ensure high-quality photos.

Wong's prediction echoes that of KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. In an investors note released earlier this week, Kuo said the iPhone 6S camera would see an upgrade to 12 megapixels.

iOS 9 release date, features and rumors

iOS 9 compatibility
- This may be the first iPhone and iPad software update to require a lightning cable.

Small iOS 9 download size
- There are still plenty of iPhone and iPad users left behind in the transition from iOS 7 to iOS 8 simply because they don't have enough internal storage to make the update.

Siri update
- Apple's voice-controlled personal assistant is reportedly receiving a small upgrade in iOS 9 to match the Siri found on Apple Watch.

Beats Music integration
- Don't forget about Dre. Streaming music is really taking off and Beats may be Apple's answer to Google Play Music All Access.

Apple Maps with public transit
- Apple is regularly improving its once-disastrous mapping effort and with each update it becomes ever more useful, but it's still not quite a match for Google Maps.

Stability improvements
- The No. 1 new, but boring feature we're going to see from iOS 9 is stability. iOS 8 has been plagued with false starts, glitches and continuing Wi-Fi and battery drain bugs.

More interface shortcuts
- iOS 9 is likely to open up new shortcuts, allowing you to quickly navigate menus on your iPhone and iPad with simple taps or gestures.

Home screen widgets
- We've been crying out for widgets for years and with iOS 8, Apple is sort of giving us them... sort of. They live in Notification Center with basic functionality at-a-glance. Pulling down this hidden menu reveals sport scores, OpenTable reservations and a Calendar preview, for example. But what we'd still love to see is home screen widgets. Apple has kept its interface clean and that's presumably one of the reasons why widgets have taken so long to arrive in any form.

Guest and kids mode
- Does someone else in your family like to get their grubby little hands on your iPad?

Actual multitasking
- Let's be honest: using two apps at once is true multitasking. Switching between two paused apps is not true multitasking. Apple could upgrade iOS 9 from the latter, fulfilling the side-by-side app functionality that always seems to be rumored but never actually pans out every year at WWDC.

iCloud price drop
- Ready or not, everything is being saved to the cloud these days and there's no easier way to back things up on an iPhone and iPad than iCloud Drive.

Ability to default to third party apps
- Apple still has the largest and most diverse selection of apps of any mobile OS, but it largely keeps them at arms-length and keeps the core smartphone operations fairly locked down.

Hide apps that can't be uninstalled
- Apple clearly doesn't want people deleting the stock apps that come with iOS, yet we'd wager we're not alone in saying that we don't use all of them - they clog up the home screen.

Less reliance on iTunes
- Liking iOS doesn't necessarily mean liking iTunes and it definitely doesn't mean liking being forced to use it whenever you connect your iPhone and iPad to a computer. It's a rather divisive piece of software and there are times when simply being able to mount your iDevice as a drive, wade through its folders and cut and paste things would seem an easier way to go about managing it, so it would be great if Apple let us do just that with iOS 9.

Embrace jailbreaking rather than trying to prevent it
- Apple has always done its best to prevent jailbreaking. Of course, determined users always find a way. There are numerous advantages to having a jailbroken device and we're not talking about the illicit ones.

If this report is correct, the iPhone 6s might be the biggest ‘S’ upgrade ever

By Chris Smith
May 18, 2015 at 11:31 AM

People often don’t think of Apple’s “S” upgrades as significant upgrades. But that might not be the case with the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus, a family of handsets that will reportedly bring several huge improvements to the table compared to their predecessors.

At least that’s what a new analyst report suggests, not long after a well-known insider provided similar details about Apple’s yet-to-be-released 2015 iPhones.

Business Insider has obtained a research note from Citi that lists expectations for the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus. According to the note, analysts expect Apple to improve screen durability and build quality, and to also beef up the specs of the phone as well as the camera.

Citi says that the new iPhone 6s models will have tougher screens than predecessors, suggesting that Gorilla Glass 4 protective displays are more likely for the new handsets than sapphire glass screens. Apple is also rumored to move to 7000 series aluminum for the iPhone 6s to prevent future Bendgate problems – it’s the same metal alloy is currently used for Apple Watch Sport models.

The iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus are expected to pack faster A9 processors and 2GB of RAM. This combo might boost speeds by more than 25%, the publication notes. The rear camera is also expected to receive a major bump in resolution, jumping from 8 megapixels in the current models to 12 megapixels for future handsets, just as previous reports have claimed.

Finally, the iPhone 6s handsets are expected to support Force Touch gestures, just like the Apple Watch and new MacBook models.

^hmm... even if that's real they are simply testing two sensors side by side ?

I think they should do a photography oriented iPhone especially since they got one of the lead engineers from the PureView team last year.

If they add a xenon flash and decent audio recording I would consider using it as my main phone..

If it will really have 2 lenses like what is shown in those pics - this could be the first ever stereo camera in a cellphone. Not only will this be groundbreaking, in terms of phone photography, it will probably be one of the most expensive and unique iphone models ever. If this dual-lens really is the real thing... I'll just forget about getting the note 5.

The other things mentioned, like having grade 7000 aluminum, same sizes of screens, 14nm m9 processor, and 2GB of ram..... all seem to be the same as the other rumors that's out there.

Next-Gen iPhones Could Feature Strong Aluminum Bodies [Rumor]
By Tyler Lee on 06/10/2015

As it stands, the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus rely on 6063 grade aluminum which is actually not as strong compared to the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge which uses a slightly higher grade of 6013 aluminum. However if the rumors are to be believed, the upcoming iPhones from Apple this year could see the Cupertino company use a higher grade aluminum which would make the phone even stronger and durable.

This speculation is based on a recent statement made by Catcher Technologies’ CEO Allen Horng who told investors to expect higher revenues in the next quarter thanks to smoother productions and “strong orders” for metal casings for new projects, and that he expects things to really improve in Q4 2015.

iPhone 6S Design Revealed In Massive Photo Leak

What will the next iPhone look like? Now we know…

The ever reliable 9to5Mac has grabbed a great exclusive by attaining the chassis for the upcoming iPhone 6S (factory leaks meant it also happened with the iPhone 6 last year) and its massive library of shots offer a mixture of disappointment and intrigue.

The Disappointment

Perhaps predictably the most underwhelming aspect of the leak is that externally the new iPhone 6S looks exactly like the old iPhone 6. No front facing stereo speakers, no USB 3.1 Type C connector (always unlikely), no change to the back for a dual lens camera and no switch of button positions (a few, strangely, wanted the lock button returned to the top).

It is also has the exact same dimensions (so no new cases needed) and this confirms Apple will be sticking with the 4.7-inch – and presumably 5.5-inch – screen sizes. The polarising antenna lines also still remain.

Given all the similarities in design, I would argue it is therefore virtually nailed on that this new model will follow convention and be called the iPhone 6S not – as some have speculated – the iPhone 7. With a number change tends to come a hardware redesign.

And yet this iPhone 6S chassis is still highly intriguing…

The Excitement

Here’s the good news: while the iPhone 6S may look identical to its predecessor externally, internally it is all change.

The big thing to note is the mounting points for the logic board and components are completely different to the iPhone 6. Where this just a minor upgrade Apple could slip a tweaked chipset, memory and battery all into the same arrangement but that is not possible.

The major reason for this is likely to be the extra space needed for the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus’ widely expected move to 2GB RAM, which will put it on a par with the current iPad Air 2. Both new models are also expected to be bumped to 12MP cameras, which may require a larger module.
