Just had some display for the HTC One m8 delivered to my store and the camera is known as DUOcamera and a feature called Ufocus which will and I quote "give stunning professional looking photos". I have a dummy model in my hand it feels nice to hold but it is even bigger than my Z1 there is a fair amount of wasted space at the bottom for branding otherwise it feels great in the hand.

How does it look feel being 90% metal ?

Posted by mysterio
It's a shame about the 4K recording but it still hasn't been perfected. OIS I thought would have been essential though.
I must say being a longtime iPhone user they have done a really good job with the build quality.

Posted by XperiaJunkie
It feels great in the hand the rounded corners help with the phone being larger the weight of the phone is good not heavy and it just feels so premium the only downside is it is even bigger than my Z1 which is big even for a 5 inch phone the dimentions are almost the same as the Z2 which has a 5.2 inch display. This is the only issue with the phone the rest is great and well put together.

Posted by XperiaJunkie
wouldn't you need at least an 8MP camera to record 4K ? if that is the case then a simple software update can't bring this feature to the HTC one M8.

Posted by mysterio
Definitely can't wait to play around with one now. I think for now 1080p is more than enough, it won't be long until 4K is common among all smartphones.
I am definitely loving the grey colour.

If this makes to my local stores by next month and the Z2 isnt still here..id go with the ONE!

where'd you get those xperiajunkie?

Posted by XperiaJunkie
I took them myself I have a retail unit at the store I work at I managed to sneak it out for a few minutes. What do you think of the shots ?

Posted by ascariss
In some of the shots the Z1 appears brighter, especially outdoor...this tends to hurt the details of the htc's shots if you ask me. Hard to say which is better, I feel the Z1 with the 4.3 firmware is lacking but still pretty good here.

I prefer the z1 photos, the htc camera although capable, needs more megapixels, but who needs megapixels when in the end all the photos will end up on instagram.

Posted by miromiromi
i was about to get disappointed with the "Z2." i thought those were shot with the z2. thankfully, they aren't. the great thing is that those sharpening artefacts have been eliminated but the random blurring are still there.

hopefully the z2 has already addressed those blurs.

i did not really expect anything amazing from the all new htc one. i was worried for sony and samsung (for the camera) because the dual-lens system demoed by corephotonics at MWC 2014 was very promising. i thought htc's camera would be like that. looks like they're sticking with the ultrapixel camera that is bound to suffer from the comparisons.

Posted by randomuser
Indeed. I'm surprised by these pictures actually. I expected the Z1 to completely outperform the Htc M8. But that isn't actually the case. It's quite tough to choose a winner here and in almost all the pictures the Z1 lens softness just ruins everything. M8 doesn't have such issues and seems sharper but darker (possibly using LOW ISO?)

Nonetheless, Z1 still has the upper hand due to the much higher MP count. Whether HTC wants to admit it or not, 4MP is just not enough. You can see that in these shots very well as well, there is virtually no headroom for cropping.

Awesome shots, thanks for posting them

I've just been messing around with the camera features and they work OK not to the extent in which HTC claim. the oblject must be facing the camera straight on or part or the object with be included in the background effect if it is at any angles and the phone did get rather hot to the point were I could'nt touch the back.

Posted by mysterio
The camera features are the only reason i really want to play with the phone. I can't wait to see how the camera performs at night.

actually the all new htc one has the higher ISO in almost all of those shots. 50 for xz1 vs 120-165 on the htc one m8. i just don't know if these ISO details are correct. you can find them in the links supplied.

I have just checked and you can manually set the ISO in the HTC One M8 but you only get 200, 400, 800 or 1600 or there is an auto setting which was used in the photos I took and the same auto setting for the ISO on the Z1 but you can select a manual ISO setting which is 50, 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600, and 3200 when used in 8MP manual mode.

Posted by XperiaJunkie
I plan on taking the HTC One M8 home tonight and do some night time shots to see if they are any good and I will upload them tomorrow as I have already uploaded 8 images today might even compare them to my Z1 again

Posted by mysterio
Yeah that would be brilliant I can't wait to see them.

Confirmed

HTC One (M8) uses in its rear camera image sensor manufactured by Omnivision and your front camera uses an image sensor manufactured by Samsung

Anything more about the One M8 other than its camera?

How's the UI (fluidity and speed)? What's new? What does it have over the Xperia Z2 and GS5? How's the battery life? Etc...

I hope more people get it as although I use the Camera a lot in my phone, there is a whole lot of other things we use to.

Posted by XperiaJunkie
The phone is fast and very fluid no lag what so ever. The UI is great and it doesn't seem to be as heavy as sense 5 and the screen as you would expect from HTC is stunning and very bright and it makes photos and videos look fantastic but a bit un natural which isn't very HTC but you will only notice this when you transfer images to a monitor that has been colour calibrated. The audio from the dual fronted speakers is very clean but not that much louder than the original (I think HTC claimed it to be 20% louder). The audio quality from a pair of headphones (using my Sony MDR-1RBT) I was left a bit flat the actual quality was good but not much depth to the sound (compared to my Z1) and I couldn't find an equalizer either to change the settings to get it to my taste. Moving on to battery life and after playing with the phone for a good 5 hours today having it on 100% by the time I was finished it was on 39% but again that is with fairly high usage i.e using the camera, video, browsing, music and general usage I found the battery to be average nothing fantastic but as I mentioned yesterday it does get very hot in the centre of the phone. These things are very small points and I'm sure the audio will be spot on for most people and the rest of the phone is superb. It is the only phone I would consider swapping a Sony for it is that good.

I would give it 8/10

Nice looking phone. Also, nice name, mate!
But it's a bit stupid having the front cam have bigger picture dimensions than the back cam!

Posted by XperiaJunkie
^ It is strange that HTC would do that I've never had one customer come into my store and as for a phone that does great selfies. The camera is its weak point by far and just baffles me as to think they knew the original drew criticism for the camera last year so rather than fix that problem they give it some gimmicky features that to honest don't work well in the real world and that you will probably only use a handful of times.

Posted by Sassho
Great phone with worst camera. Maybe front 5mp camera take better images?

Posted by alenn
Of course it is bad. The camera "lens" is plastic!

Thanks a mill for this
Always great to hear from an actual user. Sounds like HTC did a good job overall but once again the Camera doesn't live up to the hype, I wish they'd drop this UltraPixel rubbish. :/
