Considering buying a HTC One but should i?

I love the design/screen/audio quality and almost everything about the HTC One but the Camera is really making me debate whether to get one or not.

Could you do 10x8 prints from a 4MP Camera? Or would i need an 8MP Camera to do that? as I do sometimes print photos but not that often, although I do have a Canon SX150 Digital Camera.

Would like to know the thoughts of people who have bought the HTC One.

Thanks.

I just but a SIM locked version last night ... yet I haven't done anything with it yet as I'm trying to get it SIM unlocked and then work on a bootloader to load Google Play Edition OS onto it.

Take a look at pictures sourced by the HTC one to get a feel of what you're after ... that is a LARGE print so anything digitally-zoomed in (by any phone other than the Nokia EOS or 1020) should be avoided due to compression increasing over long distances.

Hopefully someone will have a clear definitive answer for you. Now I'm curious.

I have had HTC One for two months now. I must say I am pretty impressed with everything about the phone.
With regards to your question, I do not think it will look good by that size. The camera is not really that good in daylight and blowing up the picture will even make the photo looks worse (due to poor photo processing software). In dark conditions, that's where the HTC One excels, but who likes to blow up photos taken in dark condition. But all in all, the camera is pretty ok and will do.

I can post a picture taken by my HTC One and you can print it ti see for yourself.

Thanks for the feedback. I'd love to see a picture to test that print size, I'm NOT the OP of the thread though. I'm going to have mine Unlocked in the next hour so that I can FINALLY use it! And I'll take some daytime pictures as the summer here is very humid and hazy thus far and would like to see how it fairs in daylight first hand.

PS: I'd love to take night pictures and blow them up ... especially moon shots.

Right now it's the WORST Android phone I've never got to even make a call, SMS, MMS, Google+, GoogleChat, GoogleMaps or anything else on. The one I bout works with about every carrier EXCEPT the one I'm on ... I need the AWS bands variant from T-Mobile I'm all day today I've been so pissed and now I'm just depressed. I cannot call anyone, I cannot even look at messages that are now dying past the 72hour mark.

@ Supa_Fly:
How about just switching to 2G frequencies for now? I'm sure you'll be able to at least make/receive calls and send/receive sms.

Posted by rss_ndrsn
That's too bad too hear @supa_fly. are you on Wind Mobile or Mobilicity? Their coverage really suck. Well, I enjoy using HTC One but some apps from iOS are not available in Android. The bad thing it is the one I often use so I still have my iPhone 4. I am probably switching to iPhone 5S/6 once it gets out in September.

I'm on Wind - they use the AWS1700Mhz band exclusively, and i mostly stay within the city unless on vacation. For now I'm on Nexus 4 and I actually beginning to like Android now since its very mature. iOS has the sweet spot for audio applications but unless a larger and wider LCD debuts I'm not going to iOS anytime soon; we'll see what 5S/6 brings though.

Incredible, never thought I'd see you leaving Blackberry after the Z10, Supa Fly, you seemed very happy with it. I'm sure you'll love the One when you get one with the correct frequencies.

Actually the OS kept me quite content; of course some applications where just taking too long to get there. But the real reason I left is I'm kinda OCD about the pristine nature of the device, it took a nasty fall and woops - off to grey market it went. 2 days and sold with a BIG dent in it. I must say using GMaps today to find a route via public transit route was a joy; very comparable to the app on BB10.
I was VERY upset with the BlackBerry management giving far too much lip service and not delivering what they've promised nor claimed.

i'll keep my eye on BB10 progression; but thi SW2 is seriously calling me :0

Is the camera on the HTC One better than the one on the One X and the One X Plus?

Posted by hihihans
I filled in the order form, only need to press the confirm button.
Does anyone have any rejections?

Posted by hihihans
I pressed the button.
Now waiting for the mailman to deliver.

Posted by Bonovox
Congrats mate it's a super phone

Posted by hihihans
I had an Email 5 minutes ago.
Delivery tomorrow. I'm happy!!

There are only 3 things that would put me off buying the HTC ONE amd they are.
1. The camera isn't as good as other flagship smartphones unless its low light.
2. No SD card slot I'm currently using 47.6 GB of data on my Xperia Z1 lots of movies and music.
3. Their financial status is a cause for concern, although I'm sure HTC will pull them selves out it you just have to look at Blackberry as they as they may get broken up as a company being sold in parts for more cash.

Apart from them the HTC ONE is a superb smartphone in which many users are perfectly happy with and will be for months maybe years to come.

Posted by hihihans
I know but I decided to not care about the camera as I'm a lousy photographer anyhow.
32gb is enough for lots of music. I don't like movies, even short clips are not my thing.
If HTC would stop next week, I can hack it and make it a Google edition.
For hardware warranty there is a Dutch law. The shop that sold it is responsible, not the firm that made it.

Can't go wrong this way. I hope

Posted by XperiaJunkie
Great I'm sure you will love the phone its easily one of the best droids ever.

Posted by hihihans
Thanks, I'll keep you informed

hihihans, please post your first impressions

It's charging now.

Welcome to the exclusive Android4.3 club Hans!

How are you finding the update so far?

Posted by hihihans
I can't tell as I hardly used 4.2

Posted by hihihans
I'm really starting to enjoy my One.
It does everything I want it it to do without any problem. It took some time to get used to the buttons, coming from a lumia800 all buttons are on a different place.
Photos come out nice also.

Have you tried the infrared?
We've had a laugh last week, when one of my mates used it to turn off the TV in the pub

Posted by hihihans
Yeah. I annoyed the kids

Posted by Marly
A Twitter-friend in the UK once switched several TV's in an electronics shop to an adult channel

You can do the same with the neighbors. During a soccer match

Haha my Samsung Note 3 has an IR blaster might try that

Posted by Tsepz_GP
The IR Blaster is a very underrated feature, I use the one on my GS4 a lot especially now that local developers are making Remote Apps especially for GS4, Note 3 and One for the popular Multichoice Set-top-boxes we have here These phones are going to make us super lazy.

I'm also impressed by the long range of the IR Blasters and how quick they are, last phone I had with IR was my Nokia N80 and its IR was slow and cumbersome to use, tried it once or twice and gave up.

Posted by hihihans
I remember having IR on one of my phones but it was for contact sharing only.
HTC One is a better remote for my tv and cable-box as the original RC.

Posted by Tsepz_GP
True Hans I'm trying to remember, did the W800 have IR?

Just saw that the LG G2 also has an IR Blaster, it seems the major Android OEMs, Samsung, HTC and LG somehow all managed to bring this back to mobiles with their flagships, I wonder why? Anyway, very convenient feature.

Posted by Bonovox
Tried mine last night it worked in seconds

Posted by XperiaJunkie
I used mine on my Xperia Tablet Z while on holiday in the function room, there was a movie playing as people waited for the rain to clear had so much fun switching channels and even turning the TV off the look on everyones face was priceless.

Haha what u guys doing with Infra red ehh

Not a option on my iphone but I still have my 8210
With that on

@ Hans nice set (mac n phone)

Posted by hihihans
Sound is good on the One. The supplied headset is also good enough. It was sqeacking and distorted the first five minutes but became better. After about Fifteen minutes they sounded crisp and clear.

Posted by Miss UK
Hans have you tried out the Apple EarPods as of yet?
Lots of bass and much better sound then the classic ones

Try emm on ur mac hehe

Posted by Bonovox
I heard Hans' phone when I was over in Holland last week. Them Boom Sound speakers are great Hans sometimes out the box dust can cause the headphone plug or socket to make it distort

My One is supposed to be locked and branded by Vodafone, all I ever noticed was a sticker on the plastic sealing where canI find the lock info?

IrDA ... man that is a technology that will NOT die! It's older than 5, 1/4" Floppy for crying out loud!

On that note ... I'm wondering how useful it is on your Multichoice Set-Top-Boxes ... especially those that have an internet connection. Should one's you have already be internet connected and the provider offering the service have an app that may serve you better for several reasons:

Setup reminders of programs prior to when they start,
Ability to have programs recorded again for later playback.
Ability to quickly opt in to new channels for content & possibly randomly opt-out (say 1 day in only, or 2 days, or 7days/2wks).

And of course changing volume, channels, etc.
(Then again the TV maybe at a different volume and not controlled directly by the set-top-box, and picture & sound quality or preset may also differ directly on your entertainment system and TV) hmmmm. I really have to think this when I get my issues resolved to setup a new place.

From August 1. 2009 on, Vodafone NL usually doesn't lock contract phones anymore, only prepaid.
With Vodafone-exclusive models as only exception, but I don't think your One is a Voda exclusive, so it might not be locked at all.
Branding will probably be a Vodafone startup screen and a few Voda apps?

Posted by Bonovox
Hans just try another sim if you have one see if it's locked. That's the norm here too most branding is start up screen and few usually deletable apps

Posted by Miss UK
Is there not any www that you can check
On any info on android eg. Who phones locked to
If it's locked or what?

For my iPhone I use this: http://iphoneimei.info
