SAN FRANCISCO―June 10, 2013―Apple® today unveiled iOS 7, the most significant iOS update since the original iPhone®, featuring a stunning new user interface. iOS 7 is completely redesigned with subtle motion, an elegant color palette and distinct, functional layers that make it feel more alive. The typography has been refined for a cleaner, simpler look, and the use of translucency and motion makes even simple tasks more engaging. iOS 7 has hundreds of great new features, including Control Center, Notification Center, improved Multitasking, AirDrop®, enhanced Photos, Safari®, Siri® and introduces iTunes Radio™, a free Internet radio service based on the music you listen to on iTunes®.

“iOS 7 is the most significant iOS update since the original iPhone,” said Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering. “To create it, we brought together a team with a broad range of expertise from design to engineering. With what we’ve been able to achieve together, we see iOS 7 as an exciting new beginning.”

“There is a profound and enduring beauty in simplicity, in clarity, in efficiency. True simplicity is derived from so much more than just the absence of clutter and ornamentation—it’s about bringing order to complexity,” said Jony Ive, Apple’s senior vice president of Design. “iOS 7 is a clear representation of these goals. It has a whole new structure that is coherent and applied across the entire system.”

iOS 7 is completely redesigned with an entirely new user interface, but will be instantly familiar to the hundreds of millions of iPhone, iPad® and iPod touch® users around the world. The new interface actually makes your phone appear bigger because everything is designed to take advantage of the entire screen. The redesigned fonts look amazing on the Retina® display, creating even sharper text.

iOS 7 introduces Control Center. Now the controls you want to access quickly are all in one convenient place. With just one swipe from the bottom of your screen, you have access to controls for Airplane Mode, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or Do Not Disturb, and the ability to adjust screen brightness, pause or play a song, jump to the next track and stream your music with AirPlay®. Control Center also gives you instant access to apps such as Clock, Camera, Calculator and the Flashlight.

With iOS 7, Notification Center is now available from the Lock screen so you can see all your notifications with a simple swipe, and the new Today feature in Notification Center gives you an at-a-glance view of your day with a summary of the important details such as weather, traffic, meetings and events.

With improved Multitasking in iOS 7, developers have the ability to enable any app to multitask in the background with a new API. Users have the ability to switch between their apps in a more visual and intuitive way, and iOS 7 pays attention to which apps you use most and automatically keeps your content up to date in the background.

AirDrop is an entirely new way to quickly and easily share content with people nearby. When you’ve got something you want to share, AirDrop shows you your contacts close by. Just select who you want to share with and AirDrop does the rest. AirDrop transfers are peer-to-peer so you can use it anywhere, without any network or set up required, and transfers are fully encrypted so your content is protected and private.

iPhones are used to take more photos around the world every day than any other camera, and with iOS 7 the new Camera app features filters so you can add real-time photo effects. The Camera app now includes a square camera option, and you can quickly and easily switch between your four cameras—video, photo, square and panorama—with just a swipe.

iOS 7 includes a redesigned Photos app that introduces Moments, a new way to automatically organize your photos and videos based on time and location. You can zoom out to see all your photos organized by Moments, Collections of Moments and Years. iOS 7 includes iCloud Photo Sharing, the easiest way to share just the photos you want with just the people you want. With iCloud® Photo Sharing, family and friends can contribute their own photos and videos to your shared photo streams, and the new Activity view displays updates from your shared streams all in one place.

Safari’s redesigned user interface lets you see more of your content—starting with full-screen browsing. The new smart search field helps simplify searching, and there’s a new view for your bookmarks and your Safari tabs. With iCloud Keychain®, your passwords and credit card information are securely stored and available on all your devices, so navigating password protected sites or autofilling during transactions is simple and secure. Enhanced Parental Controls allow you to automatically block access to adult websites or only allow access to a specific set of permitted websites.

Siri sounds better than ever with new male and female voices and includes Twitter search integration, so you can ask Siri what people are saying on Twitter*. Siri also now has Wikipedia integration, providing access to the world’s most popular Internet reference site. Siri offers Bing web search within the app and the ability to change device settings and play back voicemail.

The Music app has a beautiful new design and includes the new iTunes Radio, a free Internet radio service featuring over 200 stations and an incredible catalog of music from the iTunes Store®, combined with features only iTunes can deliver. iTunes Radio is the best way to discover new music. When you tune into iTunes Radio on your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac®, PC or Apple TV®, you’ll have access to stations inspired by the music you already listen to, Featured Stations curated by Apple and genre-focused stations that are personalized just for you. iTunes Radio evolves based on the music you play and download. The more you use iTunes Radio and iTunes, the more it knows what you like to listen to and the more personalized your experience becomes. iTunes Radio also gives you access to exclusive “first listen” premieres from top selling artists, Siri integration plus the ability to buy anything you hear with just one tap.

With over 900,000 apps, the App Store℠ is the world’s largest app marketplace. iOS 7 now features Popular Apps Near Me, a new way to find apps based on your current location, and iOS 7 will automatically keep your apps up to date. The App Store also comes with a new Kids category, allowing teachers and parents to easily discover apps for children by age.

Additional new iOS 7 features include:
The iOS 7 beta software and SDK are available immediately for iOS Developer Program members at developer.apple.com. iOS 7 will be available as a free software update for iPhone 4 and later, iPad 2 and later, iPad mini and iPod touch (fifth generation) this fall. Some features may not be available on all products.

*US English, French and German will be available with the launch of iOS 7. Additional languages will be added over time.

I'm not a fan of Android or any OS for that matter but I believe Android rules Mobile Operating System just like how MAC OSX rules for the Computer Operating System.

iOS7 looks utter crap! they decide to make it look more "pretty" instead of making it more customisable!! looks like it was made for woman!

A new lock screen? Live wallpapers? A few more colours?

Apple are right. This is definitely the biggest change in the mobile space since the original iPhone.

It's still not cliché: This changes everything again.

Apple has just told the world it's using Apple maps to navigate forward. And it shows. They're lost.

This is a big rip off of Android. Big big.

Posted by goldenface
It does look a lot like the Android Beam live wallpaper.

I thought it looked a tad girly as well. Icons look cartoony much like Touch Wiz. Many people from what i have read were hoping for an iTunes radical change and the way the app store looks. The iTunes radio is similar to Nokia Music service. Move over Apple it's time to die slowly.

Time for Microsoft to sue Apple now with their rip off slide upwards to unlock like Windows phone does. It is all blatantly ideas from Android with quick pull down toggles for shortcuts etc

Bonovox and Away,

If BBOS users by demograph is any indication - 53% of which are woman (oh yeah gonna hook 'em all up on BBM - I'm guessing a higher percentage are woman on iOS but Apple will not divulge such demographics unless its critically significant to their long term business.

Apple to die slowly?! Hell NO!
OS X gets some very nice improvements specifically in battery life performance for their ultrabooks.
Mac Pro is SICK! SICK SICK SICK!! (I'll be buying one of these EVEN if I have to rob a bank )
^ I'm a Mac user - a simple user - but learning more by the day.

Don't think M$ can do that. BB10 has the same unlock along with QNX in PlayBook OS since 1.0, plus the Pre had this from PalmOS (Unless MS purchased them and not just acquired their employees).

I'm kinda seriously done with the 'copy this' 'rip off that' argument to be honest.

to be honest.

AMEN!!

Companies have been doing this for decades, they take ideas from each other and improve on them, and as someone who uses both Android and iOS heavily on a daily basis, I appreciate this as each party has a great implementation of each idea be it Multitasking, Notifications, Media handling etc...

The whole "so and so copied" argument could be ended with EVERYONE copied Motorola when they went into the mobile phone business, so they are all big "copy cats" (urrggh...)

Anyway, I'm excited about iOS7, it has received some much needed overhauling while staying true to what iOS is all about, simplicity. There are days where iOS is a huge breath of fresh air for me from Android and vice versa, I just can't get over what a great job Apple, Google and Samsung have done, the funny thing is that these 3 have a great deal of input or influence in each others HW AND/OR SW.

Posted by Hobbs
I'm a big fan of those beautiful icons.Always have been from day one.

Posted by Bonovox
Yes so companies have copied each other for years but that gives only the right to Apple to sue everyone?? The most laughable was slide to unlock feature

Posted by Tsepz_GP
Apple abusing the US patent system I guess, which reminds me, there's another major Apple vs. Samsung trial next year and they are not even done with the appeal of last year's verdict, it's such a mess, but that's all for another thread.

Posted by Bonovox
The top left of the screen the small dots in a line. Is that the new network reception bars??

Posted by etaab
I don't like it one bit. I prefer the older look. When I first saw it this morning, I first thought it looked like Symbian Anna !

They've clearly ripped off Android, WP and even Symbian with some user interface elements that were not there.

New functionality however is something never to be sneezed at. If an update adds a new feature or function, great. Sadly, multitasking is still missing.

Posted by Bonovox
Oh yes it does very much like Symbian Anna Someone I seen online said they wanted to see things like being able to reply to a message when still in another app or a game.

Funny how things have turned around, now Apple taking a leaf(or more) out of androids. That slide to unlock..lol after all that hooplah on patents funny Apple still did this.
Anyway hope the New OS is good though..IOS really needed some visual upgrades!

You can do that with a Galaxy S3 onwards anyway. Split screen use of two apps is relatively straight forward now. And then pop-up play which allows me to watch videos and send a text at the same time is something I find really useful if im watching a video, movie or podcast.

I am running iOS 7 Beta 1 on my 4S since yesterday and like it so far, but I have a few issues.

Bugs:

Quirks:
I really only have that much apps on my first homescreen. One. Tweetbot. In my dock are two folders with nine apps each. I like to have a very clean look, so my wallpaper was colour matched to the Tweetbot icon.
It looked just like this: http://i.imgur.com/A5c8Shl.png
The dock in iOS7 is an translucent white stripe. It looked horrible with the blue wallpaper. My phone sports a mainly white wallpaper now to get the dock out of the way, but Tweetbot now feels out of place.

There's the swipe gesture to get back one level in apps like Mail or the settings instead of hitting the option in the top left corner.
It does not work in Music to get back from Now Playing.
It does not work in Photos to get back from Moments to Collections to Years.
I think it should work everywhere to get to the screen you were before when a "<" is indicating it.

edit: And I really don't like that Spotlight now is only searching the phone and you have to open a browser or use Siri to search the web.

Dot's ... those signal dots ... where have I seen those before? hmmmmm.

Danger, Inc.'s SideKick/HipTop device ... the "7" with the data dots! yes!!

Take a VERY VERY close look in the top right-hand corner where the 7 is ... see those dots just to the left? this is the Danger Inc Sidekick LX back in 2009.

Posted by xell
That's quite a stretch. You don't hear me saying...
"LOOK WHAT MY W880i MOD FROM 2009 LOOKED LIKE! APPLE TOTALLY RIPPED ME OFF!"

@Miss_UK with all those rain and clouds, you're definitely in the UK haha..

Yes it was sunny for a week then back to rain again

What's wrong with me these days??? If this was 2-3years ago I would've been excited to try iOS7 Beta ,but now? Nope, I'm happy to wait until the final one arrives, in anyway, apparently there is no iPad iOS7 Beta anyway, but even if there was, I wouldn't have jumped on it, same with the recent GS4 FW, I simply updated to an OTA that was available, haven't bothered to jump ahead and flash there newer MEA FW, I could easily get the Indian or Singapore FW but nah, I'll wait, just so happy with what I've got.

Xell & Miss_UK

How was multitasking and the web browser?
[ This Message was edited by: Tsepz_GP on 2013-06-13 23:10 ]

Posted by Miss UK
@ MooGoo, Yes unfortunatly im definatley in (Stuck) the Uk
@ Tsepz, Used it for the whole today its really is a nice difference from Apple
I cannot fault it except for them to adjust the App colours there to bright

Multitasking is wonderful the iOS 7 experience for that is improved alot
opening and closing stuff is a nicer experience I feel now

Safari has a new appearance but it still operates the same although webpages do load abit quicker
plus theres a privacy option in settings now for safe web browsing

My fav is prob the Weather app of all its all animated like my ex HTC

but the system is a nice change myphone is almost 2 years old it works fine with iOS7
athough ive noticed a few minor bugs I think when apple launch there next phone then iOS7 will
be an even better experience!

Posted by etaab
I really don't like it. Its bright alright, the icons don't even have a shadow like the ones on my S3's Touchwhiz driven interface which makes them bright like that.

And Apple fans thought Touchwhiz looked it was for kids - iOS 7 is for pre school !

Posted by Miss UK
Etaab once ur blinded and have your sunglasses at hand its really nice iOS
well I like it I wouldn't wanna jump down to iOS 6.1.3 right now

its a shame I cannot send you and Bonovox a iPhone each with it on for a day to test it all out
I think your verdicts will be diabolical in a good way

anyway moving on posted this cos.............

I hope Apple make those Toggles slightly lengthier and add ON/OFF Text
I think that will confuse alot of people if they keep like the above

Posted by etaab
I'd happily use one, but trust me, I couldn't live with it.

If the iPhone and its limited OS had been out in 2002, prior to me moving onto proper smartphones in 2003 which still to this day have more features than iOS 7, iPhones would have seemed brilliant. But they're still behind and lack features I use day to day. So ergo, pointless and not much more than a flashy feature phone.

Posted by pt020
I think she will sue Apple for stealing her patents

Posted by Miss UK
Etaab yeah took Apple long enough to decide they wanted to get out a Mobile phone,
infact I think iPhone came out just after I left 02 cos there data was too expensive I went to Voda
didnt really fancy a iPhone back then it was a un-heard of product Nokia E65 was all the hype for me then

after owning a few iPods I think the iPhone deserved a go, I just enjoy having everything on one device its just alot simpler for me

btw iOS 7 does have a few bugs my fav app eBay wont run boohoo I guess I will save some cash not looking

Posted by etaab
I actually think they're making a mistake. As the days go on since this new UI was revealed I just think they're going to come off even worse with it. I prefer the skeumorphic UI prior. This is too simple and too kiddy. The icons just aren't punchy enough to differentiate themselves from the background. If I had an iPhone running this, i'd have to set the wallpaper to something dark to make the icons pop out a bit more.

Posted by Tsepz_GP
Ooooooohhh it looks even better on the iPad

iOS 7 for iPad shown off on video

As far as mobile OS are concerns in my opinion Android OS are the best. I enjoy android os is 4.1 (jelly bean).

Posted by etaab
Sorry cant agree, looks horrible

Apple are trying too hard. Bring back that dude who designed the skeumorphism stuff imo.

Posted by Miss UK
Lol Etaab

Ok found another bug don't know if it's the AppStore
But if a app needs to be updated and u select the update
It just keeps saying waiting nothing happens

If you delete that app in the app settings then trying
To redownload is virtually impossible the install is there but
If pressed no install starts lol

Looks like a re install is booked for my phone later

iOS7 does look horrible looks very fisher price and something you would find on kids tablet.

That would be Scott Forstall. You'll recall he introduced "Time Machine" for OSX and to today this is STILL used and a great software for the desktop OS ... I cannot see OSX without it going forward for another 10yrs. I believe he had a hand in its implementation and design, but that's another topic.

I agree I prefer the previous UI to this kiddy korner junk in iOS7 ... I almost feel like I'm back in gr 5 in 1982/3, been smelling WAY too many magic markers (that was some good stuff, Purple smelled like grapes, black licorice, green watermelon; ahhh I can almost smell those markers right now if I close my eyes).
EDIT ... these

You cannot see any fault due to the Kool-Aid (hey well drink one fan juice or another). In all honesty if you're impressed with 3G signal and not looking for 4G (IP5 has it), then you're not fully testing Beta4 enough. Go nuts on your applications - especially those that offer much more than the singular experience: GarageBand for iOS, GoodReader, etc etc.

Go on, give it a real solid 36hr try ... put it to its limits.

I'm a Mac user through and through, and the more iCloud continues to grow well and ties into what OSX offers the more iOS begins to appeal to me .... again! I still love my current device though.
