Steve Jobs vowed to 'destroy' Android

BBC article

Steve Jobs said he wanted to destroy Android and would spend all of Apple's money and his dying breath if that is what it took to do so.

Mr Jobs told author Walter Isaacson that he viewed Android's similarity to iOS as "grand theft".

Talk about megalomaniac!!

The 'grid pattern' of icons has existed for over a decade, going way back to phones such as the T68 and beyond. so it could be argued that the iphone 'look' is hardly original and Jobs is attempting to grab the glory.

It sounds to me like current ferocious litigation battles were instigated on direct order from Jobs himself - using any tool in his arsenal in order to destroy Android - not a healthy outlook if you ask me and couldn't have contributed to the state of his health.

If it wasn't for Android, who would force Apple to keep pushing the boundary and prevent them from launching any old crap at an bloated price?

Posted by daviep
sounds about right the way they are chasing all the patent rights of the various android phones

Posted by adsada
How can this be justified? I mean what is he stating Android has copied? The fact it runs on a phone which uses a capacity touch screen? The fact you swipe with your finger? But this is just another technological advantage that would have happened with or without Apple.

Siemens didn't sue everyone else because they were first to use a colour screen

Sharp didn't sue everyone else because they were first to create a camera phone

Ericsson didn't sue everyone else because they were first to use bluetooth

And lastly Martin Cooper from Motorola didn't sue everyone because he invented the mobile phone

So why should this be any different, plus the fact Apple were not the first to create a touch screen phone anyway, why should Apple claim all the glory for this new technology with without rivals such as Android because there would then be no motivation to do make a product better and thus would offer the consumer worse value for money.

Like that even Microsoft can tell iOS is a copy of WM.

This is all BULLSHIT!

Posted by daviep
i think apple would be happy if it had no competition in the mobile marketplace

Posted by Bonovox
Oh he was all heart then He never succeeded either

Posted by Shino03
This is ridiculous with all due respect to him.

Posted by rikken
but now he is gone. . . . . .

Posted by Bonovox
Apple invented everything didn't you know?? Getting sick of all this.

Posted by Tsepz_GP
At 190million units sold, over 43% in US Marketshare and over 50% global marketshare and 550,000+ daily activations he clearly succeeded.

Posted by admad
He couldn't beat a simple Flash, how did he want to beat Android?:D

Posted by etaab
Imagine if he succeeded however, imagine it was this year. What would be left ? iOS versus Symbian and Windows ?

The market would be a very boring place without the Android army spicing things up a bit. Steve was a very wise man who could clearly see what was to come in the future, but it does sound like he was a bit of a megalomaniac like goldenface mentioned. A dictator rather than a leader is not always good.

Look was happened to Gaddafi..

Posted by Bonovox
Yeah Androids would have come to take him away. I cannot believe he said it's a stolen product. Duh,hello Steve no it's not.

Maybe Steve can do more from his grave as he could alive
Android will destroy itself in time. That's in all movies that is

Posted by Bonovox
Android's will fight each other in the Matrix. Anyway, well it seems Steve Jobs is now worth more since his death with the huge sales so far. But I think Apple will not be the same now. Oh what a shame

Posted by razec
Wow, so it's true that even death can't cure stupidity

Posted by titus1
The Guy's already dead. This is all pointless. Tim Cook's the Captain now over at Cupertino.

Posted by Miss UK
How has Android stolen ideas?

in anycase those both as bad as one another then cos Apple have
adopted the notifications bar in there iOS 5

He may be dead, but he has lots of followers, especially his successor CEO and i think the apple company as a whole will pursue Google as long as they can fund their lawyers, I respect Mr. Jobs for his creative thinking but i loathed him for his actions, and i think I'm not the only one who thinks that way. even if his belief proves technically right, there will be people who will always think that his logic is flawed.

I absolutely knew there would be over-reaction when I posted this, because its Apple and people can't handle the success of this company as apparantly we're all drones under some kind of mind control without the ability to choose and pick for ourselves. (if that really is the case then I've been a Psion drone, a Palm drone, a Nokia drone, a Windows mobile drone a.... etc etc)

All companies surely set out to destroy the competition although few have such recognised CEO's who openly make such statements.

but I'm glad you proved my point about Apple and Jobs

Posted by goldenface
If the iPhone has no competition then why was he so hellbent on trying to destroy Android?

Posted by masseur
who said the iphone has no competition

of course it does and presumably thats why Apple/Job was out to beat the competition. I'm sure if you asked Peter Chou (yeah, who? - the head of HTC) or Choi Gee-Sung (again, who? - head of Samsung) they are also out to destroy their competition otherwise what are they doing as CEO?

Posted by goldenface
I'm sure you did masseur

There is a difference between taking out the competition in the tech arena rather than going all legalistic on them.

Posted by masseur
erm, I don't ever remember saying that any device didn't have any competition?

I think in the business world that all tactics apply at all times... even if those tactics don't come to fruition but do provide an impact/delay etc to the competition...

to quote from Jerry Maguire, "this is not show friends, its show business"

Reading stuff like this would lead me to believe that Jobs was not the only one to make such bold statements.

Posted by masseur
lol, well perhaps not that bold as no one really takes Ballmer that seriously, which is why I purposely didn't quote him in my subsequent post

I only admit to being an drone

It sounds like he was accusing Eric Schmidt of using Apple trade secrets to create Android. Would be interesting to see the evidence...

Both Eric Schmidt and Andy Rubin are ex-Apple employees so you can imagine Steve's fury, especialy seeing how Android tackles all of iOS's downfalls e.g.
-iOS is available on one phone released once a year.
-Android is available on mutiple devices released all year round at a variety of price points.

-iOS isnt that customizable
-Android is highly customizabl

-iOS close
-Android open

etc...

Customizing an Android phone is also tiring and somewhat stressful.
What Launcher to use...what Rom to flash...what kernel to use...the best radio...always on the look for a new version of rom. You've been spending a lot more time customizing it rather than actually using it as a phone

Those aren't 'downfalls' at all.
iOS is exclusive to Apple. That makes a lot of money for Apple while their software competitor (Google) develops and licences their OS for free. Their hardware competitors are in a constant race against each other to differentiate their products which share the same functionality. Advantage Apple.

By customisable do you mean installing unauthorised third party apps? This is a security and quality control feature from Apple that Google and Symbian don't possess. Advantage Apple again.

iOS being closed (as above) is a feature not a bug. Android isn't all that open actually; I've heard it described (accurately) as a trojan for Google's services. Too many dodgy banner ads for my liking are starting to turn me off Android.

I prefer Apple products over their services... I prefer Google services over Apple services. Hence my Macbook Pro for work, and my Android and Google Apps for services.

1. do u really see advantage for a consumer or for a company. company has to have a motive of satisfying customer needs. a device without a bluetooth file transfer wil no longer satisfy the customer.
2. u mean Ios is secured?? then wat u call RIM os as?. most of the Android OEM's allowing the consumer to unlock the boot loader since they wanted to satisfy the customer that doesnot meant that OS is insecure.
3.open always leads to development. unix is more secured than windows though its open. Android is not only used in mobile it spans across many electronics unlike IOS.

4.i see ur avatar is X10 not Iphone. Android advanage!!

pull down status bar is copied by both symbian and IOS. then how damn IOS claiming android stealing their ideas? i'm sure ditching pull down status bar will kill the most of the functional aspects of the IOS.

Well since Apple have now been granted the patent which describes how to unlock a device with a swipe gesture im sure Steve can rest easy knowing Apple are putting up a good fight against the droid army.

Which i find sad, its a bit over the top with such a patent.

Posted by rikken
I believe it indicates that Apple are not fond of competition

Just a question.

Do you think it is best if Apple has full control over every available application available for your iMac? That every application running on Apple hardware must be approved by Apple?

If not. Why not?

What is the difference between an iMac and iPhone when it comes to "quality control feature"?

The cut's clean, and Android makes a gundam pose (at least the way i see it) the designer should have at least included some exploding-circuit effect on the apple robot to make it epic
