There have been made several Walkman models since Sony Ericsson started it's W phones series. Inventing the W810, as a W800 successor made it the most popular Walkman phone which includes great overall and enhanced music features which makes it very good MP3 player, digital camera and a mobile phone. But the true missunderstanging came after the W850 was started. Depending on the customers opinions, the most of them say that the W850 has better media player (Walkman), but worse camera compared to the W810. So let's see which one of these phones is better.
Sony Ericsson W850 has some useful options which are excluded in the W810. It has secondary video call camera with VGA resolution which makes the W850 a 3G phone. The other features are almost the same except the W850's design. The W850 is slidebar phone, as the W810 is standard bar phone.
Camera Contest:
As it can be seen, both phone's camera lenses are not protected by lens cover as the other older SE phones were, so the camera is not well protected from scratching which can make the picture quality worse. The camera drivers are almost the same on both phones so taking the pictures, or recording the videos is the same way. But what happens after you take the picture?
W810
The picture taken with the W810 is clear and sharp with very reliable colors. The size of the picture is 1680x1224 pixels, same as the W850's one.
W850
The W850 picture is sharp only on the part of the picture where the focused object is. So the sides of the picture (the corners) are very messed up in the background which is very big minus for the camera of this phone. The colors of the picture is not that reliable as the W810 is, so the winner of the camera contest, definately is the W810.
Media Player (Walkman) contest :
W810 vs W850:
The W810 is Walkman phone, but it is not that new as the W850 is, so it has not the latest Walkman software. The W810's Walkman player holds the traditional orange theme from the W810 and other Walkman phones as it's version is Walkman 1, compared to the W850's one which is Walkman version 2. The newer version of the Walkman player includes some new useful options as the online streaming and the media store, which makes it much better than the Walkman V1 one. The reading of the media files stored on the phone's memory stick is much faster than the W810, and the video player has some improvements when trying to play huge videos with big framerate and resolution. The MegaBass equalizer function is included in the both Walkman versions. The look of the new Walkman is a bit different from the old one. It's difference can be seen on the folowing screenshots:

@strizlow800, not a problem. If you want me to choose between the 2 on picture quality, i would opt for the W850i. The picture does look pretty good i must admit.

OK, but I think the W810's picture is sharper than the W850's one. The fact is that the focused object on the W850 picture look PERFECT, but the other part of the picture is a little bit messed up. Also when taking a picture from closer distances than 2-3 meters, the background of the picture is crappy.

I guess it also depends on the brightness of the day and surroundings.
Any chance of showing 2 pictures of the same object with both phones?
That would give us a better understanding of which cam is better

Well for now (I do not about later) I havent tested the both phones on same object. I will probably get the W850 in my hands after some time to test it, so then I'll take picture of same object and post to this or another post.

Well I agree with your choice for the W850 even I'm very confused when I have to choose between two very similar phones. So my choice is the W850 for me, as I use the phone more for listening music, not for the camera that much. At the end, W850 is newer model and it has excellent music features compared to the W810 although it is not for forgetting. I don't know about the 3D gaming on the W850. The W850's keyboard look more comfortable for playing games for me, because it is slidebar phone, and the keys are separated from the display and bigger than the W810.

I'll go for the w810. Walkman is also solid, camera is good for current phone standards, phone is portable, design is good, it is also good for playing mobile games(i'll get on to my xbox if i need a real gaming experience. Can never get it on a phone though), battery life is ok, screen is clear and big enough to display mobile contents, and so much more!

I'd choose the W850 as I'd rather music over camera. Not that I don't value the camera, but at the end of the day, I'll probably use the
more. Not to mention the improved interface, both for the and for the general scheme of things. And the screen is really sharp on the W850.

The W810i is the better allrounder and I would go as far to say it is as capable a music player as it is an imaging device.
I think though that the TrackID and Walkman 2.0 player of the W850i more than makes up for the lack of AF. AF on the W850i wouldn't make it a better music phone - which is what they ultimately both are.
So I would hand W850i the prize.

Personally I wish the w810i had the new walkman v2. Having said that, I pick the w810. Slicker, smaller (compared to an 'opened' w850i) and good to look at. Overall I love the w810i better.

no havin auto focus on w850 is the main reason for its backdrop
w810 is preferred for takin much closer pics(abt 5-7 inches far) clearly than w850
though overall functions r better on w850

The thing is, although the w850i is the newer walkman phone, it only had 2.5 playing time as opposed to the w810i's 8 hours. I've got the w850i and its good for gaming, my sister has the w810i and although the picture is clearer, it doesn't really matter to me. Plus on my phone I have face warp

I have the W850, I got it recently, I think that the W850i is better, because well, I would use the phone's music player much more than the camera, if I was to take photos, I will bring a camera, which is like 7-10 mega pixels, but if I want to listen to music, I can use my phone, instead of bringing another music player, it's just the song that is different. The sound quality of W850i is fantastic too, also the graphics.
Also, I don't think you guys mentioned the overall outside look of the phone yet, if you compare that, I think the W850i will win, most people prefer sliders with auto keylock when slided down, than the W810i, which is a standard straight phone, if you accidentally forgot to keylock it, you might easily send messages/ dial the wrong number. Some SE straight phones are good though, and even if you didn't key lock, it's hard to dial the wrong number because the keypad is tight.
I would rate the W850i 9.5/10, and the W810i 8/10
Great phones. The K790i is also great, smooth feeling.

Well, i have had the w810 for a while now, as far as i'm concerned the autofocus feature is a must for good photos, you just dont get the same quality out of one without autofocus, plus the flash LED is one of the best available, compared with the W850's, its clear the W850 wasnt intened for good pics. I like the screen size of the w850, and for a QVGA, SE managed to pack it up pretty tight/compact. I must agree that the W850 has much better sound quality, the hissing in the W810 is really stupid, for a walkman fone, but i fixed that through a bit of patching
, I also love the box that the W850 comes in. One thing i hate about the W850 is that its missing a play/pause button < I mean wat the hell SE, a walkman fone without play/pause. Im planing to buy W850 soon & only one thing is bothering me and that is navigation keys. They say that they are small and very frustrating. Hard to press with big fingers etc. Is that true or.... I would like to hear opinion from W850 owners.

this is just what i was looking for as im gonna buy a w850 next weekend...my first choise was the w810... y i decided to get the w850 actually im not sure but theres sumthing about the w850 is looks better and the overall feeling of it..as for the keypad issue i read an sum internet page it has some kind of factory crack on the down part of the d pad (look it up in google)but aparently it only happends on the white one...so anyways im getting a black w850 so its definitly w850 over w810

Not to mention the bigger 240x320 screen, better rear speaker, the 8GB memory support and the stylish design. would go for the white version cause c'mon, everyone has a black bar phone, orange walkmans are everywhere, the white one is cooler, just like japanese phones. w850 is an exotic phone i should remark. The bigger size comes in handy when making a call too.
Oh yeah, w850 has album art, w810 doesnt.
And its not like im dying for the perfect picture, w850 is not that bad at all, there is always photoshop, even irfanview can save your day.
But really, the AF would made the w850 the best phone ever, i dare to say. There is no perfect phone as everyone knows, but its a really well balanced phone overall.
In the end my vote goes for w850.

The W850i has the loudest speaker of the two phones.
I've just fixed a W810i that's now in mint condition, and am very tempted to keep this and sell my W850i, as it has a better camera unit on it, though I'd miss the far superior screen on the W850i, plus it's a nice (not so!) little phone too!

I'd take the V630 over the W810 due to 3G. I'd have the W850 over both because of its cool slider design.
Trouble is, here in NZ W850 and K800 retail for $799 each and there's no way I'd have a W850 over a K800.
I like the
phones, I just don't see them as good value.

I'd love to have the W810i just for the camera, just for the autofocus. My W850i is ok but disapointing compared to my old K750i, which I regret selling really.
Just waiting for SE to bring out a 3G phone with autofocus and a QVGA screen thats not the P990i or W900i due to the overwhelming size.
